TV Review: American Idol - Top Twelve Results

The results show began with a bang tonight, first with Horton and friends gathered around a television watching Idol, and then with Jim Carrey in the audience dressed as his character from the soon to be released movie Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears A Who.
Afterward, things moved into high gear as the Top Twelve performed a medley of songs from the Lennon and McCartney songbook. While I enjoy these team performances, I'm also somehow reminded of The Brady Bunch Variety Hour — anyone remember that? Luckily, this déjà vu feeling tends to fade later in the season as the contestants dwindle down in number.
Ryan announced that next week would have the same song choices as this week, so more Lennon/McCartney music coming our way. I'm hoping to hear some of my favorites next week! Katherine McPhee was there and performed with David Foster on the piano. Nice to see her again!
Also, tonight's episode gave us our first Ford commercial of the year. The group sang "The Distance" and looked way too cute. We also got a glimpse of them attending the Horton premier — looked like fun!
Moving on… the final drum roll left these three contestants standing middle stage:
- Syesha Mercado
- Kristy Lee Cook
- David Hernandez
And... Syesha is safe. So is Kristy. David Hernandez's time on American Idol has come to an end. I'm actually kind of bummed out about this, but I think that will be a pretty standard feeling for me this season. I like a lot more of the talent this year than I have in previous years.
Ruben Studdard's recording of "Celebrate Me Home" is this season's goodbye song, and it played as we were reminded of David Hernandez's American Idol journey.
I was off by one in the bottom three this week and was incorrect on my guess of who would be out. Glad to see Kristy is still around, sad to see David H. leave. Ah well, it is what it is.

I wasn't actually "surprised" by the results, but I was hoping to see David H. stick around a little longer.
I agree with you on Michael Johns. I've really liked him from the beginning, but he's going to have to bring it a little stronger. And as far as David Archuleta goes -- my guess is he'll do much better next week.
Thought Kristy was going for sure after that disastrous rendition of '8 Days a Week'. Have a feeling David will make a successful career anyway. My money? Carly and David Johns are the two left standing at the end.
Outstanding review, Tracy! I was LOL on the Brady Bunch Variety hour, and I couldn't agree more. :)
Curious to see who comes out on top this year. The talent does have a broader base, imo, than last year.

I was really surprised by the end result too, Tracy. When the bottom three were revealed my money was on Kristy. I felt like it was two weeks in a row that she murdered a song by turning it country (I didn't like her version of "Open Arms" nearly as much as the judges did.)
I was also happy to see Chikezie really bring it this week. I liked him so much through the audition process but thought he had failed to shine in the finals, up until Tuesday's performance.
Michael Johns is another one who caught my eye during the auditions, but I'm afraid if he doesn't do something special soon, we'll be saying goodbye to him earlier than I want to.
I was also excited to hear we're going to be treated to a second week of Lennon/McCartney songs, but I'm a little worried about the younger contestants like David Archuleta. I hope he picks a song he can connect to next week.
