Pre-Play Impressions: Super Smash Bros. Brawl

So that leaves two more games I am eager to get my hands on this year for the Wii. Once Mario Kart Wii and Castle of Shikigami III are out, then what? I guess my Wii will go back into hibernation while I play the PS3 and 360.

Why are you doing this to us, Nintendo? The only thing I ever did to you was buy every console (well, sans the "portable" Virtual Boy) you ever produced. As you might have gathered by now, I — and many other games like me — have the misfortune of being "hardcore" Wii owners. Hell, even the medium-core gamers are getting the shaft, too. Either Nintendo forgot that their fans grew up and are still playing video games, or they simply do not care.

But lets get back to Super Smash Bros. Brawl, that is what this is all about after all (not really). First we heard it doesn't support voice chat. Then we learn that it doesn't even do text chat. You can pick words or phrases to interact with your fellow Brawl combatants. Or you could use Skype or Ventrillo. Beyond the fact that Friend Codes are a complete joke, now you are telling me I can't chat (properly) in arguably the biggest online game the Wii has ever seen?

I mean, even the PSP has voice chat in games now.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl has seen more hype than even Super Mario Galaxy, yet that hype has failed to really make me want the game. So why did I buy it then! Here's why: for the first time — ever — I have a Wii game that I have friends in real life that I can play online. Nintendo might not have an online system on par with Xbox Live or PSN, but at least I have actual friends to play a Wii game online with. Now, if only I could remember my 12-digit Friend Code to tell Cory so we can play...

Thankfully I can use my GameCube controller. Though I hit a snag pretty quickly upon launching the game.

There is not enough available space in the Wii system memory. Create 128 blocks of free space either by moving data to an SD card or deleting data in the Data Management screen.

Lovely dialog. No, really, it is nice. It has a cool looking bevel to it, and a pretty readable font, too.

Okay, I have to go find one of my SD cards. Oh, look, Army of Two - never mind.

Dude, you suck. Now I'm gonna pull out my GameCube just to play some late-night Melee by myself.

Wow, five minutes of my life wasted reading this... You spend 3/4 of the article babbling about lack of other wii games, when you finally talk about brawl you just bag the online (you can do random matches too, ya know) and then complain about yourself downloading too many vc games. btw, you CAN, i hear, delete them and redownload when you want, free of charge. You've got ssbb before the rest of us who actually want it, just to look at your refection on the case and bag the crap out of it WITHOUT PLAYING IT

MUA HA HA HA. Glad you liked it.

This article really wasn't about SSBB, btw.

And yes, I did play it, quite a bit actually, even online.

That was dang crappy. If you don't like it why don't you give it to someone who actually wants it? Brawl is going to be a great game and just because there are a few minor inconviences (which apparently are the worst things in the world now) let you say the whole game sucked. Maybe it doesn't have voice chat and the Friend Codes should be shorter but that doesn't mean that the whole game sucked (did you even try multiplayer or do you not have enough friends for that?). Jeeze... give me a break. It's not a bad thing to own a Wii. At least it's better then the Xbox 360 and the PS3 which are basically copies of the Xbox and PS2.

You my friend... should jump in a lake.

Well be sure to tune into our show on Tuesday at 9:30 (see the main Gaming page) when I will be ripping this game apart.

Is this a review of SSBB or Shikigami III

#8 — March 11, 2008 @ 03:05AM — Ken Edwards [URL]

This is an op-ed. Not a review. If you mean the radio show, this week's episode is all about SSBB and the Wii.
