Review: Hotel Golf Du Medoc
Published March 02, 2008
Imagine a vacation when you can choose to play golf or spa all day, and at night you can enjoy the best wines in the world paired with first-rate cuisine and friendly servers who speak English?
Such was my experience at Hotel Golf Du Medoc, a very modern golf resort located in the Medoc region of Bordeaux. Though I visited the web site in advance, I was not prepared for such gorgeous, high-tech, modern rooms with remarkably comfortable beds.
Our room offered a very large bathroom with an enormous tub, a sleek, glass-enclosed shower, and a separate toilet. Though not called a suite, clever arrangement allowed for a sitting area separate from the bedroom by a bright red spinner that could move the flat screen plasma television to a position so that it faced the bed (thus dividing the room) or the sofa and coffee table.
The room was quite comfortable. The crisps sheets, after a long soak in the ultra sunken tub, are memorable to this moment. The young, highly trained staff was quite accommodating.
In the morning, the breakfast buffet included eggs, potatoes, and tomatoes in addition to fruit and various roles. The white room looked over the golf course and gorgeous skyline.
Dinner was quite good, having offered many specialties from the South West of France and a fine assortment of wines from many price levels, including some quality third growths. Guests in the dining room that evening (we are talking the slow, dreary, grey days of January) included several sets of businessmen visiting for a conference and a lone woman who had the courage to order a bottle of good wine though she was dining by herself.
This night, I ordered the seafood soup, and the grilled red mullet, which was fantastic. Other excellent choices included a starter of scallops "a la plancha" with beetroot in Lillet wine sauce, and the cod, served grilled a la plancha with a Spanish sauce.
If your objective is good food, fantastic wine, and quality golf — or just a remote spot to get away from it all — this hotel may very well hit the spot.
