New Ideas for Today’s Knitting is a large hardbound volume that promises “glamorous, sexy, and cutting edge” designs. I suppose those terms could be used to describe the projects contained within… but not in a positive manner.

Over 20 apparel projects are contained herein, ranging from dresses, camisoles, halter tops, bikinis, jackets, and nightgowns. Not a single design is one I could see spending time knitting, especially when there are so many truly beautiful and sophisticated patterns and books out there. Sure, there are a couple decent tank top patterns here, but nothing particularly interesting or “new.” There are two fun monster fur coats in here, but both look nearly identical (one is slightly shorter) and it's hard to conceive making those up for myself. A short knit dress with lace hem is decently attractive, but not for it’s suggested purpose: as an unconventional wedding dress. “Sophisticated Tank,” a striped halter top, is not particularly sophisticated, but it is cute and summery.

Some of these patterns are so unattractive they are almost amusing to look at. The “Little Black Dress” pattern is a short-sleeved black shift with rows and rows of cheap “fun fur.” “Wear If You Dare” is a skimpy black mini dress with fringed skirt made of cheap yarn – something I do not dare wear. “Red Hot Mama” looks like a Pocahontas costume. The pink cabled tube top is too short, unattractive, and generally a bad idea. And the Chanel knock-off jacket is just embarrassingly cheap-looking.

The patterns in this New Ideas for Today's Knitting are, for the most part, pretty simple and would probably suit a pre-teen just learning to knit and ready to move beyond scarves. All the patterns use inexpensive yarn that can be found at most big-box craft stores. The summery tanks, halters, and beachwear are far better suited for adolescents. This isn't your grandmother's knitting... but it isn't yours, either.
