The Emergence Of A Burly NHL Offensive Line
Published January 20, 2008
If someone accosted me and put a knife to my neck and demanded I select the top line in the NHL, I would probably faint.
Couldn't they just ask nicely?
Violent thoughts notwithstanding, choosing which line is currently wreaking havoc on opposing teams defense is easy: Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry and Todd Bertuzzi of the Anaheim (formerly known as the Mighty) Ducks.
Yes, that Todd Bertuzzi. Soockerpoonch Todd.
Regardless, of what one may think of him, Bertuzzi is undergoing somewhat of a personal rebirth playing alongside the young lads. It's like Todd's own private Anaheim. Not since his days in Vancouver where he played with Brendan Morrison and Markus Naslund - itself one a top line for a brief period of time - has he been this productive.
Bertuzzi has tallied 11 goals and 16 assists for 27 points in 36 games.
However, the play of Getzlaf and Perry has people quacking and splashing with excitement. Following the exit of sniper Teemu Selanne, Anaheim's offensive leadership was dealt a severe blow. Whenever a top line player departs, players are asked to step up. Getzlaf and Perry have volunteered.
Through January 18, Getzlaf has responded with 18 goals and 38 assists for 56 points and a top ten placing and has become one of the league's top power forward. Perry for his part has popped 26 goals (currently 8th in the NHL) and added 18 assists for 44 points.
Their shot-to-goal ratios are also impressive: Getzlaf 14.2; Perry 16.9; and Bertuzzi 19.3.
Not only is this line talented they are big: Getzlaf 6-3 213; Perry 6-3 202; and Bertuzzi 6-3 245. They so big and strong. I feel safe around them.
As you can see, I have no choice but to ordain them the 6-3 Line.
