Senses Working Overtime: This Week in Television (1/13/08)
Published January 13, 2008
FRIDAY
Friday Night Lights (FOX) Matt, don't mess it up with the nurse. Who am I kidding? Nothing good lasts more than half a season on this show.
Dogtown (NAT GEO) Happened to come across this last week. I'm not even a huge dog fan but the stories at this "no-kill" shelter are very engrossing.
SATURDAY
Husband For Hire (OXYGEN) Stealing from Lifetime's stable . . . Mario Lopez, Erik Estrada, Nadine Velazquez (My Name Is Earl), and Mark Consuelos make a great Latin cast. But how did Tempestt Bledsoe get in here?
Goodbye, Mr Chips (TCM) Robert Donat won the Oscar for Best Actor in the same year that saw the release of Gone With The Wind, The Wizard Of Oz, and Stagecoach. Even in 1939, great teacher stories worked well with Academy voters.
TV-ON-DVD TO OWN (to be released January 15)
1. Extras (Complete Series). A must own. Maybe better than The Office!
2. Family Guy - Blue Harvest. The Special Edition comes with a t-shirt, trading cards, 3-D glasses and a booklet. Best Star Wars parody ever!
3. Queen (mini-series). Following another branch of the Alex Haley/Roots tree. Good stuff.
4. Rockford Files (Season 5). James Garner solving crimes. What else do you need?
5. Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown. Valentine's Day is just cruel to Charlie. Why won't that little red-haired girl get the hint?
TV-ON-DVD NEWS
This week you get the Family Guy: Blue Harvest parody. But you'll have to wait until May 20th for the Robot Chicken: Star Wars parody. Not sure how I feel about game shows that aren't Hollywood Squares or Family Feud on DVD but March 25 brings 26 episodes of The Price Is Right from the early days in the ‘50s/’60s through Bob's last week earlier this year.
TOP 5 ADDS TO YOUR NETFLIX QUEUE (released January 8)
5. 3:10 To Yuma. Christian Bale and Russell Crowe in a Western based on an Elmore Leonard story. That's a solid base.
4. Sunshine. Terrible sci-fi premise about the Sun dying out. But it's got Michelle Yeoh!
3. Smiley Face. Is this the most accessible Gregg Araki film? Anna Faris stands out in this slightly wacky dope film.
2. Big Bang Love, Juvenile A. More arty Takashi Miike.
1. All New Superfriends Hour (Season 1, Vol. 1) Remember the first time you were introduced to Zan and Jayna the Wonder Twins?
BEST BUY BEST BUY OF THE WEEK
Get yourself some Jaws or Rio Bravo for $7.50 each!

The Alex Haley mini-series is just "Queen" (the name of the main character), not "The Queen."
