DVD Review: White Noise 2

White Noise 2 is a direct-to-DVD release starring Nathan Fillion (Serenity, Desperate Housewives, Buffy The Vampire Slayer) as Abe Dale, a man who tries to commit suicide after his wife and son are brutally murdered right in front of him in a diner. He nearly succeeds in killing himself, but is brought back and afterward starts to see a glowing aura around people who are about to die.

Abe believes he has a duty to save those he can, including his nurse (Katee Sackhoff, Battlestar Galactica, Bionic Woman), but then he learns that his family's killer saved them several days earlier because he has the same ability as he does. Abe starts to dig into why people who were saved are then killed by their rescuer several days later and makes a terrifying discovery. Abe then has to decide if he has to now kill the people he’s saved.

I thought this was going to be a horror movie, and I’m not a big horror fan — being scared isn’t my idea of a good time; however there are exceptions. But I wouldn’t classify this as strictly horror; it’s more of a mystery/suspense, psychological thriller type of film. I’m also a big supporter of any Whedonverse actor (any show from creator Joss Whedon – Buffy, Angel, Firefly, and once this strike is over, Dollhouse) and Fillion is among those alumni. That Sackhoff happens to be portraying one of the best characters on one of my favorite shows currently on the air - Battlestar Galactica - doesn’t hurt either. The two didn’t have enough scenes together, but I liked the chemistry when they were on screen together.

The film also gives recognition to a character portrayed by Fillion in the past. After he’s saved several people, one of his friends asks him if he thinks he is a superhero; he then calls Abe "Captain Tight Pants." This is nod to Captain Malcolm Reynolds, the character Fillion played in the series Firefly and later the movie Serenity, which I thought was a nice touch.

There are some pretty interesting extras on this disc:

The deleted scenes section has over 30 minutes of cut scenes.

"Exploring Near Death Experience" – this featurette takes a look at the legitimacy of NDE, which inspired this film and is well documented.

"The Making of White Noise 2" – this behind the scenes featurette goes from start to finish, from concept stage to the end. Interviews with cast, and behind the scenes footage show what it took to make this film.

"Journey into Madness" – this featurette has Barbara Copp, the film’s location and witchcraft expert, and star Nathan Fillion take viewers on a tour of the Crease Clinic, which is an infamous Vancouver psychiatric hospital where the majority of White Noise 2 was shot.

White Noise 2 is an edgy, psychological thriller that will keep you guessing until the end. Cast and crew did a good job of keeping me on the edge of my seat.

Grade B+
