BCS Championship Preview: Don't Keep Your Eye On The Ball

Habitual football watching puts optic focus on wherever the football is doing. The camera does this too. So it's almost impossible to watch receivers move downfield, but defensive linemen are almost always somewhere on the screen. Same with linebackers, especially if they step up to stop the run or blitz.

There are others to watch as well, and yes, they're also on defense. LSU safety Craig Steltz joined Laurinaitis and Dorsey on the All-American first team. The All-American second team included OSU defensive end Vernon Gholston and LSU linebacker Ali Highsmith. That's a total of five defenders with accolades. I suppose this is the national title game with the no-name ... offense.

The 1998 championship game had a couple names on offense, such as wide receivers Peter Warrick and Peerless Price, but the defense also ruled in terms of starpower. Tennessee linebacker Al Wilson went on to be named to five NFL Pro Bowl teams. Florida State cornerback Dexter Jackson went on to win MVP of Super Bowl XXXVII. FSU defensive tackle Corey Simon also played in a Pro Bowl game.

That game was considered ugly, which means tonight's showdown has all the makings to be equally unbecoming. After all, a team with two losses has a chance to be crowned champions. That's never been the case before. If the game has a total of two touchdowns and a smattering of field goals, it won't surprise me.

But if one of the quarterbacks has a big game, then they just might be the second coming of Tee Martin.

Addendum: It was asked of me by a fellow editor exactly how the Heisman-caliber quarterbacks performed in the national title games. Of the team with the higher vote-getting quarterback, their team went 3-5 in BCS championship games. Heisman-winning QBs are 2-2.
