Extinction handles itself fine in daylight on DVD. The transfer is sharp, clean, and detailed. In darker scenes, the disc proves muddy and hard to see. The light black levels cause compression problems, and fast action doesn't hold together. Thankfully, most of the movie does happen in broad daylight, though it's hard to ignore the problems in darkness.

Surround speaker use here is nothing short of phenomenal. The bird attack is an amazing piece of sound design, and when bullets start flying these are tracked through all five channels as well. Bass only packs a small punch and doesn't have depth you would expect from some of the action.

A three-way commentary from Paul W.S. Anderson, director Russell Mulcahy, and producer Jeremy Bolt deliver a well-rounded discussion of all aspects of filming from their perspectives. Eleven deleted scenes greet the viewer once out of the movie and run for about eight and a half minutes.

Beneath Racoon City is an above-average documentary about the aspects of the film, including a nice look at the miniature work. A trailer for the upcoming CG effort Resident Evil - Degeneration is included, and a stack of different trailers for various upcoming films (Zombie Strippers is sure to be a hit) round the disc off.

Extinction ranks slightly behind Apocalypse in terms of box office draw. However, the sequels hauled in $10 million more each as compared to the original. This series is proving it has legs for some reason, and it's almost certain we'll be seeing a fourth with number like that.
