Music Review: Dragons of Zynth - Coronation of Thieves

This record is a hazy, funky, jazzy, bluesy melding of noise. Dragons of Zynth have created a boiling cauldron of music with their debut, Coronation of Thieves. Every once in a while, a bubble of music you know erupts. Hardcore, blues, jazz, funk, just plain noise - it’s all here, subdued and strewn throughout all the tracks. You can’t pick out these different musical forms in specific places. They are just…there.

The Dragons are invading out of Cleveland and are fronted by twins Aku and Akwetey O.T. The groove is provided by J. Bizza and Autry Fulbright, playing drums and bass respectively. I won’t pretend to understand all that they are trying to accomplish with the amazing sound on this record, but I find I’m drawn to it. The more I listen, the more I want to hear. It’s easy to get lost in these tracks, wandering from one sonic highway to the next.

The first half of the record is loud and noisy, showcasing the harder elements. “Breaker” and “Who Rize Above” in particular have pieces of rock wedged into the sound. Both feature some nice squealing guitar work and possess menacing bass grooves. “Who Rize Above” also features some rocking percussion work.

The second half is a contrast. It drifts into lounge music, a surreal musical escapade. This is the half you can get lost in. The final two tracks, “Labor Day Lung” and “Closer,” end the musical adventure on a soothing, inviting note. The music breaks into a sweet groove. They leave you wanting more. And I swear, on that last track I heard a little jazz flute and all I could think was…these guys know Ron Burgundy!

The vocals are an eclectic mix, just like the music. Sometimes eerie and despondent, sometimes confident and celebratory. They sing, they speak, they chant.

The Dragons of Zynth once described themselves as a “live project.” They will be an ever evolving band that must be heard to be understood or believed. Coronation of Thieves is definitely recommended listening.
