DVD Review: Lost - The Complete Third Season

Lost is the story of the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 and their ongoing struggle to survive on a remote island. Through flashbacks, we learn about the survivors' pasts and how many of their lives are intertwined.

The series started strong with its first season quickly achieving cult status and it was a bona fide hit for the struggling network ABC. Due to strong writing from a creative team that includes JJ Abrams (Alias, Felicity), Lost sucked the viewers in with its unique use of flashbacks and compelling character stories. Actors such as Matthew Fox, Evangeline Lilly, Josh Holloway, and Terry O'Quinn brought the characters to life and kept the viewers eager for more. In the third season we learn about the mysterious “Others,” people who have been on the island for a long time, how they got there, what they’re up to, and what their intentions are, which just added more punch to the storylines.

Some fans feel the show stumbled a bit in season two, and while it did start off clunkily in season three (due to the network not wanting to miss the fall premiere, combined with wanting to show episodes without any interruptions), the show came back in October 2006 for six episodes, and then went off the air for the next three months. Since Lost is a serial drama (a la 24, and wanting to follow in that show's footsteps) showing reruns would confuse new viewers. Coming back for 16 uninterrupted weeks in February 2007, Lost returned strong and ended with a shocking finale.

One of the best things about the show is the flashbacks showing the survivor's pasts, and for the finale the producers decided to do something different — the flash forward. We learn a couple of the survivors get off the island, but just because they got off the island doesn’t mean there’s a happy ending; and the producers have said that future episodes will contain more flash forwards in addition to the flashbacks we’ve come to enjoy.

Lost: The Complete Third Season is packed with extras including:

  • Audio commentaries by cast and crew
  • Deleted scenes - there are nine deleted scenes. While some scenes are understandably cut, others were interesting and should have been included, but since episodes are getting shorter so more commercials can be run, it seems that’s why they were deleted.
  • The Lost Book Club touches upon some of the various books seen on the show and their significance to the storyline.
  • The featurette "The World of the Others" examines the role of “The Others” in the third season through interviews with producers and cast members.
  • "Lost Flashbacks" provide never-before-seen peeks into the castaways past lives.
  • "Lost on Location" is a behind the scenes documentary that shows the making of ten episodes from the past season.
  • "Lost in A Day" - this featurette shows 24 hours in production and spans 7 episodes in various stages.
  • "Bloopers" - this featurette shows cast and crew flubbing lines and generally being silly when mistakes occur.

Lost: The Complete Third Season is a worthy addition to your DVD collection.
