Other characters also keep things light. Shuya Arisada is the Student Association president and the princesses' "boss." A former princess himself, Shuya is both charming and cunning, a combination that never ceases to amaze the trio. Akira Sakamoto is president of Tohru and Yujirou's class and more or less Shuya's handpicked successor. Even though he's highly respected by the student body (due in part to his older brother being held in high regard), he sees himself as somewhat average. Akira is the only non-princess friend the trio has. Kaoru Natasho designs the princesses' outfits. With his Shirley Temple curls and obsession with fashion design, he's the closest thing this show has to a gay stereotype.

Originally airing in 2006 on Japanese television, Princess Princess looks great on DVD. Boasting a 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, the show's bright colors and great character designs shine. The 12-episode series is spread across three discs, each in their original keepcase, and housed in a thin cardboard box. Extras for this set are minimal with trailers, a preview of the original manga, and textless versions of the opening and closing animation. No English dub is provided on this release. Only Japanese audio with removable English subtitles is available.

Whether you're a fan of shoujo anime or just someone who's looking to explore anime beyond the traditional action and sci-fi releases, Princess Princess is a good choice. Once you get over the plothole that's never addressed (If the school needs "excitement", why not bring girls in from another school?), it's an enjoyable piece of fluff. It's not as wacky as other anime comedies but has enough laughs (and even some drama) to spare. In addition, it's reasonably priced. The retail price for this set is actually less than the retail price of most single anime discs.

If you can handle boys so pretty that they make pretty girls, Princess Princess is worth your time.
