The Friday Morning Listen: Gillian Welch - Time (The Revelator)

There's this advertisement I keep seeing in my daily morning read (the New Yorker, which has recently bumped The Writer from that spot), it might be for a credit card or something, that features actor/writer/funny geeky chick Tina Fey. Tina is sitting on the floor near her desk, her young daughter ensconced on the chair. Clutter is everywhere: the floor, the desk, the wall (c'mon, a matrix of PostIt notes is clutter). It seems that Fey has a busy life. Yeah, who doesn't?

Why, just yesterday I spent several hours with a couple of colleagues attempting to figure out why a particular piece of code isn't running fast enough. By itself, that problem is no big deal. It was the snowstorm (and one other event) that complicated things. I got up in the morning and took TheWife™ to work (leaving at 6:45AM) so that I could take the Jeep to work. As much as I love my Mini, it's no fun to drive in a blizzard, especially without snow tires! I drove her to work, and then headed back down to the office. When I got about 15 minutes from the workplace, my cell phone rang. It was my mother, saying that the furnace wouldn't come on.

Great.

The storm was on the way, so it seemed prudent to head back home to deal with this problem. Deal with it I did (it's an old steam boiler and was low on water), followed by yet anther trip to work, and then several hours of software wrangling. The snow was at its height just about when I decided to reverse the trip. Oh well, it's a Jeep, you know! Two hours later I arrive at the WorkEstablishmentDuWife™. A quick 30 minutes from there and we're finally home. Sure that was 18 inches of snow at the base of the driveway, but that's what 4-wheel drive is for. It's a Jeep, y'know?

A better choice you'll not find. I think I've made my feelings on this album well known throughout the Fanboy universe.

"Dear Someone" is indeed a devastating, but beautiful song. Ms. Welch is on my list now thanks to you. :-)

And, man, you missed out on a perfect opportunity to roll out the "It's a Jeep thing, you wouldn't understand" mantra that I see on so many Jeeps out here. (Or is that "an Arizona thing"?)

or something.

It could be worse. There was a bit ice storm in Oklahoma which has caused my brother to be without power all this week. Worse yet, they don't expect they will be able to turn it back on for another three weeks.

I should send him some Gillian to keep him warm through all that.
