My Eye on the Golden Globes Nominations 2008
Published December 14, 2007
In the Director category, nominees are Tim Burton for Sweeney Todd, Ethan and Joel Coen for No Country for Old Men, Julian Schnabel for The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Ridley Scott for American Gangster, along with Joe Wright for Atonement.
The Animated group has only three films getting the nod: Bee Movie, Ratatouille, and The Simpsons Movie.
Foreign Language Film Nods are 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (Romania), The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (France and the U.S.), The Kite Runner (U.S.), Lust, Caution (Taiwan), and Persepolis (France).
Television has more than a few familiar faces among the contenders. While cable has several of its shows and actors nominated, regular channels have their fair share.
Dramas include Big Love, Damages, Grey's Anatomy, House, Mad Men, and The Tudors. If that last title seems unfamiliar, it might be because it is a made-for-television movie rather than a weekly series.
Comedies are slightly more balanced in nominations between cable and regular programs. 30 Rock shares the stage with Californication. Also nominated are Entourage, Extras, and Pushing Daisies, my personal favorite new show.
The Actors up for a TV Drama Golden Globe are Michael C. Hall playing a serial killer in Dexter (I'm not surprised he's in the running), Jon Hamm from Mad Men, Hugh Laurie as the cantankerous doctor in House, Jonathan Rhys Myers for The Tudors, and Bill Paxton for Big Love.
The Dramatic Actresses also have well-known faces this year: Patricia Arquette for Medium, Glenn Close for Damages, Minnie Driver for The Riches, Edie Falco, who was married to a mobster for ten seasons during The Sopranos (perhaps this time she'll win), Sally Field for Brothers and Sisters, Holly Hunter in Saving Grace, and Kyra Sedgwick for The Closer.
The acting teams in the comedies is where the surprises may come from.
For Best Actor in a Comedy, the award will go to one of these men: Alec Baldwin for 30 Rock, Steve Carell for The Office, David Duchovny for Californication, or perhaps Ricky Gervais from Extras. However, Lee Pace of Pushing Daisies might have something to say about that!
Last, but not least, Best Actresses for a Comedy are Christina Applegate in Samantha Who?, America Ferrara in Ugly Betty, Tina Fey for 30 Rock, Anna Friel from Pushing Daisies, and Mary-Louise Parker in Weeds.
Tune in January 13 to find out if your faves win!
