My Eye on the Golden Globes Nominations 2008
Published December 14, 2007
The Emmys have passed by, and the Golden Globes will soon arrive. Out of all award shows, this one is unique since it hands statuettes to various groups from both film and television. Even the categories themselves do not always distinguish between the two.
Best Picture nods go to Atonement, American Gangster, Eastern Promises, The Great Debaters, No Country For Old Men, and There Will be Blood. Gee, what are the chances a Denzel Washington flick will win this?
Comedy or musical movies are in a separate category. Charlie Wilson's War and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street compete against Hairspray, Juno, and Across the Universe.
It's not unusual for actor and actress nominations to be given to cast members of the nominated shows, and this year is no different.
George Clooney leads off the list of Best Actors with his work in Michael Clayton. He is joined by Daniel Day-Lewis from There Will Be Blood, James McAvoy for Atonement, Denzel Washington for American Gangster, with Viggo Mortensen out of Eastern Promises along for the ride.
Best Actresses are Angelina Jolie in A Mighty Heart, Cate Blanchett for Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Keira Knightley in Atonement , Julie Christie from Away From Her, and Jodie Foster fighting back after witnessing a violent attack during The Brave One.
On the Comedy side, Best Actor nods go to Johnny Depp as a murderous barber in Sweeney Todd, Ryan Gosling for Lars and the Real Girl, Tom Hanks playing a real-life politician for Charlie Wilson's War, Philip Seymour Hoffman for The Savages, and John C. Reilly in Walk Hard:The Dewey Cox Story.
Actresses are Amy Adams from the family production of Enchanted, Nikki Blonsky for the revival of the movie Hairspray, Helena Bonham Carter for Sweeney Todd, Marian Cotillard for La Vie En Rose, and Ellen Page for Juno.
Supporting nods fall into two groups, male and female. They do not split by whether the audience laughs or cries like the previous categories do.
Actors are Casey Affleck for The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Javier Bardem from No Country for Old Men, Philip Seymour Hoffman for Charlie Wilson's War, John Travolta in drag for Hairspray, and Tom Wilkinson for Michael Clayton.
Actresses include Cate Blanchett for I'm Not There, Julia Roberts as a Texas socialite in Charlie Wilson's War, Saiorse Ronan for Atonement, Amy Ryan for Gone Baby Gone. Tilda Swinton's work in Michael Clayton rounds out this category.
