Manhwa Review: XS Hybrid Vol. 1 by Song Ji-Hyung

In the not so distant future there are humans that are more than what they seem. Called hybrids, they live in a dangerous world where government type agencies are always lurking and other hybrids are on the hunt.

When Huin Chang first meets Mina they are kids. After looking deeply into her eyes Chang falls into a three day coma. He remembers thinking how beautiful her eyes were and how it felt as if he had crossed a threshold into a new life. Now as teenagers the two have grown up together and are close; Chang is a bit of a wild child who harbors a secret love for Mina.

When Mina is attacked by a mysterious man Chang steps up and saves her. Though he receives a beating Mina comes away from the encounter with out a scratch, which is all that Chang cares about. When she is attacked a second time by the same mysterious man Chang starts to question the circumstances and despite still wearing the bruises from the last time he met the guy prepares to defend his girl.

But from where or when? So with a full cast of superhuman bad-guys, questionable good-guys, government agencies, skater punks, motorcycle gangs, and a few clueless teenagers the story is only going forward.

Ji-Hyung’s artwork is going to be a big draw for this series. The story is something that most are going to be familiar with in some form or another but paired with the exceptional artwork it makes XS Hybrid more than worth the cover price. Detailed car chases and action scenes flow smoothly between hints of what the hybrids really are.

XS Hybrid is a fast paced wild ride that keeps you glued to the pages and asking questions. Who are the hybrids? Why does the government want them? What does Mina have that makes her so special? I don’t know but I can’t wait to find out.
