Good Job, Steve Kragthorpe
Published December 07, 2007
I was wrong. I hate to admit it, but this college football season I harped on one guy all year and now I realize that I was just dead wrong. Sorry, Steve Kragthorpe.
Yes, I’ve been really hard on the new Louisville coach this year. I’ve rooted for the other team in all Louisville’s games, felt satisfied after each of their six losses, and generally been a Kragthorpe hater.
This bitterness grew from his departure from the University of Tulsa. I love the Golden Hurricane, and I dearly wish that someday someone would stick around long enough to make the team a viable team. Many people scoff at my admittedly hopeful aspirations for TU football, but in all reality they’re already a good team. TU went 9-4 this year, lost to Central Florida’s high-powered offense in the C-USA championship game and will play in the GMAC Bowl.
The reason that I think they can become a nationally recognized and ranked program is that TU’s non-conference schedule isn’t patsy. Unlike the non-conf dregs that Ohio State and Kansas drag up to massacre, this year TU played BYU and Oklahoma. In 2010 they will play Oklahoma and Texas Tech.
But with the rapid coach turnover at TU, the foundation is always laid but never built on. I had high hopes that Steve Kragthorpe would be the one to build that foundation, but he bolted for Louisville when the spot opened up. It made me really sad.
And thus, I began drinkin’ on the haterade. I was going to scorn all that Kragthorpe did, because he left Tulsa. One roommate called me out on my ludicrousness from week one. I ignored him, stewing in my own bitterness.
As Louisville’s season started to crumble, I secretly rejoiced. Everything was going wrong – losses to Syracuse and Utah? Oh dear. Players suspended? Player with drug problem dismissed? Two players diagnosed with the same rare spinal disease, ending their playing careers? It just seemed like utter chaos over there at Louisville.
As it is when a team is in chaos, the season didn’t go as planned. The loss to UConn was a heartbreaker, especially with a significantly blown call. The loss to South Florida was a drubbing, and even I could feel how badly that sucked for Brian Brohm and company.

Soon to be 9-5. Sorry, Stephen.
