From what I've heard of him, it wouldn't be beyond the bounds of credibility for the <I>real</I> Hugo Chavez to seek out a piece such as this and comment on it. That is, if he had any spare time that he wasn't spending appearing on TV.

He can probably spell 'Iraqis' though.

Yes, well, we <I>will</I> keep writing articles about the fellow...

The simple fact is that Dr Paul's campaign seems to have caught the imagination of the internet generation in a way that no other candidate has been able to. Whether or not that translates to feet in voting booths, we'll see in a couple of months, when the primaries (finally, thank God) kick in.

And, of course, it may well be the case that, like this article's cheeky experiment, the very use of the term Ron Paul is a good way for sites to generate traffic now. I do recall an American chap coming over to the UK sometime last year - I think he was advising the Conservative party - and predicting that your next election will be fought and won on the internet. Maybe he was/is a Ron Paul adviser? Have the other candidates mobilised in this way? I know debates are Youtubed but Paul seems to have the numbers of bloggers and blog commenters. (Again, excuse my ignorance, this is the only source I regularly use for American political punditry, but it has seen several Ron Paul avalanches).

How correct you are Jacob, I do apologise for missing my keys, and thank you for pointing it out too, which in this country we call annoying pedantry and condescention... Fair play though. I'm simply curious, that's all...

<I>"Actually, both parties tried something like that this year and it backfired."</i>

Big time. Democratic primary voters in Florida are disenfranchised by DNC, who has ruled their votes won't count.

Our election cycle is absurd, and someday, perhaps, someone will realize it and say:

"Enough already!
Iowa: March 1
New Hampshire: March 15

"Everyone else in randomly generated groups of 10 states, at two-week intervals after that.

"No backtalk. Just do it."

Actually, both parties tried something like that this year and it backfired. All the states want to be at the head of the line, and all the candidates feel they must declare their intention to run at least 6-9 months before the first primary.

Any attempt to outlaw that would be jumped on as anti-American, anti-freedom-of-speech.

How do you cope Handyguy?? I mean it's like fucking years man. Over here an election is called - at the whim of the governing party within a maximum Parliament length - and then it's all done and dusted in a couple of months at the most. And, that's quite enough for me. Then, you're system is very much more (potentially) engaging of the voter. My head will fall off by nect November... It would be a shame if a court case changed the rules and would, I imagine, further damage faith in the democratic process.

The ballot initiative has been described as 'dead' a couple of times, but it keeps springing back up as in a horror movie. It would probably award 19 of Calif's 55 electoral votes to the Republican candidate. In a close election, that would certainly turn the tide. At this point, who knows how close it will actually be?

Actually, I'm bored of the whole election - and as I say I'm thousands of miles away. I really don't know how you all cope with it - sheesh, it just goes on and on and then the whole thing'll start again when you get down to your final toothsome twosome. I actually admire the belief of all you Ron Paulsters - which first hit me on myspace yoinks ago when I was asked to be the friend of a Ron Paul supporter, who set his profile up entirely to that end. I mean fair play, but I do wonder about Paul-fatigue... Is there no chance of a third party this time. And, something I was interested in that was reported over here was a court case by Republicans in California to split the electoral college vote so it represents the vote as a whole rather than being all-or-nothing one way or the other - the way it was represented in the paper I read was that if this case is succesful then you might as well wave in whoever the Republicans pick. Has that gone away?

"On the whole Doctor Paul debate... there's a real danger that everyone's gonna be bored sh*tless "

Unlikely, because of his message.

But I AM bored sh*tless with the news media replaying the asinine trivia coming from all the others.

I think someone - and I believe it was Dave Nalle - made a rather prescient comment on the whole Doctor Paul debate. There's a real danger that everyone's gonna be bored-sh*tless with the very mention of his name come voting time. I live in Britain - and beyond the fact we hear quite a lot about our former colonies over the Atlantic (haven't you done well for yerselves) in the normal run of the news, you being the only superpower and anglophone and all that the main exposure I get to US political views is here. And, I'm bored! I know that doesn't matter cos I don't get a vote and so on, and I should be worried about British politics, but I do think there's a real danger in over-egging your on-line grass-roots pudding. Then again (and, though I hate to praise myself, I wish more people would say this on here) I could be completely wrong. Haven't you had pretty low turnouts for elections over there? We do. Perhaps this is a massive re-engagement with politics.
As I say these are comments from afar so please add a pinch of saline Atlantic water.

Me, a Bot? Not a bit of it! I made my debut in blogcritics when I discovered the <a href="http://blogcritics.org/archives/2007/07/17/125351.php"> Ron Paul and the Brain-Off Conspiracy</a> thread, but I typed "Ron Paul+idiot" into Google search my OWN dang self to get here. I came for Ron Paul, but I stayed for the drama. :)

If Ron Paul supporters ARE bots, then they're bots who get around with real live, not just virtual, legs. My neighborhood has only been blitzed with door hangers for ONE 2008 presidential candidate so far: Ron Paul. This is in Mitt Romney country, too. There are Vote for Ron Paul signs all over town. It's all being done by volunteers, all over the country, so the war chest should still be a tidy sum come primary time.

Tail-end-of-the-Baby-Boomer chickenhawks don't have any problems sending OTHER people's sons into Iraq. However, they may change their tune when they realize (through the efforts of enthusiastic Ron Paul campaigners) that by the time their OWN sons grow up, if the US keeps on its current Empire Building "Project of a New American Century" trajectory, it will STILL be sending soldiers into the protracted War on Terror--a war which only seems to fertilize the ground in which terrorists thrive. You know, with declining birth rates, a strong possibility exists for the reinstitution of the draft.

If I were 18 and about to vote in my very first election, the possibility of endless wars for a succession of imaginatively conceived provocations would cause me to push my concerns about gay marriage and abortion and the credibility of the truthers standing next to me at the Ron Paul rally way down on my list of issues that matter. And sooner or later, hopefully before the Republican primaries are over and done, the same rearrangement of priorities will be happening for their die-hard Right Wing and/or Conservative moms and dads, too.
