The Tuesday Morning Purchase: Elliott Sharp, Ron Wood
Published November 27, 2007
What the heck is going on here? We're on a rocket-powered sled toward Christmas and all is quiet (almost) on the new releases front. It's bizarre, if you ask me. Maybe the industry would sell more CD's if they actually tried? Ah, there's probably some jargon or marketing statistics produced by consultants that provide a perfect explanation. Hey, I'm not runnin' things. All of that said, there are still a couple of very interesting chunks 'o sound to check out.
Larynx - Elliott Sharp & Carbon (Neos)/Ear-opening instrumental
Elliott Sharp does two things very well: construct very thought-provoking compositions and make scary, scary noise in the realization of those compositions. Larynx is a reissue from 1988. You know, the holiday season is in full swing. Maybe you need some music to block out the stress? OK, I'll admit that I haven't heard this album, but my methods of stress reduction can be, uhm....unorthodox. So maybe this large ensemble (complete with string quartet) will help you to center your thoughts amidst the chaos.
If not, turn it up loud and flush out those guests-who-have-overstayed-their-welcome.
The First Barbarians: Live from Kilburn - Ron Wood (Wooden)/Rock
Ron Wood was still a member of The Faces when he put out I've Got My Own Album To Do. This live recording (and DVD) is from that tour, featuring Wood on guitar, Faces buddy Ian McLagan, and even an appearance by Rod Stewart. Future Rolling Stones cohort Keith Richards is there, too. I've always been more of a fan of Wood's Gimme Some Neck, but that won't stop me from turning this record up way too loud.

You've heard of Ron Wood's "Ive Got My own Album To Do"? Come tomorrow, I may singing "I've Got No Column To Do."
-Glen
Two new music choices worth mentioning? Did the old guy get his column back? Nah, it's not Thursday yet.
And there's not six links back to his blog full of pictures of Paris Hilton and Popeye.
Pretty typical post-Thanksgiving offerings. Once Black Friday is out of the way, the labels might as well hold on to new releases - everyone is concentrating on older things for Christmas and the end of year lists are going to ignore anything that new. Few people beyond us freaks are paying much attention to the new stuff at this point.
Tis the season to look back at previous TMPs and Breakdowns to get the albums we meant to get that slipped through the cracks the first time.
So is Larynx just a straight reissue or are there special new premiums (bonus tracks, cool new packaging)?
So Tom, you're saying for the next few weeks I can only hope for reissued pictures of popeye? dang!
So far I haven't even received an update from AMG at all. They usually come late in the day, but today...nada. I don't think you have to worry about Popeye though Mat (at least not from me). But if there aren't any new releases to write about...

Sir Bich. and Sir Brews. You are very bad boys. Lumps of coal forthcoming. ; )
Or as Sir DJ would say... "great lumps of fuck!"
Larynx is missing from my Sharp collection, too. But a 13 piece band consisting of four drummers and a string quartet?? That's insane.
It's also very compelling (to me, at least).

Whoa, only two picks this week?!? Something really is wrong with the music industry if they can't come up with anymore cool stuff than that a month before Christmas.
