The Ultimate College Football Road Trip

11/1: Kyle Field, College Station, Texas (Texas A&M vs. Colorado)
Back into the Big XII for a game at one of my favorite stadiums and Home of the Twelfth Man. In addition to being a visually striking (and intimidating) stadium, the student section here is the most organized and fanatical that I've heard of. Midnight Yell is a weekly event the night before home and away games where the students go to the stadium to practice their cheers. One of their cheers is the Aggie War Hymn, in which everyone in the stadium locks arms and sways. It's the only time I've ever seen an entire stadium sway in unison. Not just the people, either - the press box actually sways left to right during the song. There's enough tradition here to keep newcomers confused all game.
11/8: Bryant-Denny Stadium, Tuscaloosa, Alabama (Alabama vs. Mississippi St.)
No season would be complete without seeing an Alabama game. Like my visit to Nebraska, this game is viewed more for the historical value of Alabama football than for the stadium or the current success of the team. Regardless, I want to see an Alabama game and yell "Roll Tide." It also serves nicely as a connector between College Station and Blacksburg, Virginia, as the drive between the two would otherwise be way too long by my rules. Non sequitur: I like the fact that Alabama's mascot is an elephant.
11/15: Lane Stadium, Blacksburg, Virginia (Virginia Tech vs. ?)
Their schedule's not official yet, but I would hope that they're home this week so I could experience a monstrously intimidating stadium in Blacksburg. Lane Stadium isn't the biggest, nor is it the loudest; it doesn't have the most intimidating design, nor does it have the wildest fans. But by being near the top of the list in all of those categories, Blacksburg could end up being one of my favorite stadiums. I would not want to play here, but I sure would want to watch a game here. I like that there are turkey noises played over the PA, and the fact that they pull off maroon and orange as their colors.
11/22: Ohio Stadium, Columbus, Ohio (Ohio State vs. Michigan)
I'm happy that the Big Ten Showdown is in Ohio this year because I'll be able to see The Best Damn Band in the Land in all its glory. Ohio State's marching band is the organization behind Script Ohio, which is highly touted as the greatest college-football-related tradition ever. In addition to seeing an awesome band, there's also a fantastic rivalry football game. Why is this a fantastic rivalry? Take your pick: the long history contained in it; the fact that the game is the epitome of Big Ten smash mouth football; the amount of great players that have played in the game; the atmosphere; the significance it usually has in post-season play. It's easily the second-best rivalry in the country.
