Concert Review: Ween - Rialto Theatre, Tuscon, AZ, 11/4/2007

The final song was the absurd "Fluffy", which turned into another one of those extended jams, maybe the longest one of the night. But the top moment happened right before that:
In between songs, Gene casually approached the front of the stage and picked up a prop pony that someone had thrown up there in a haze of glory. He seemed genuinely tickled by the arrival of this silly toy as he returned to the microphone to sing "Mister, Would You Please Help My Pony?" to the pony on a stick as Dean looked on in bewilderment. After the song, Gene sweetly (if awkwardly) cuddled with the prop. He appreciated the strange, but lovely gesture.
That's a good way to explain the night. Even the most die hard Ween fan, which I consider myself to be, can admit that their power is an odd one, but it can easily take control over you. If that is the case, the crowd most certainly appreciated the strange, lovely gesture that was "An Evening With Ween" as the promoters so accurately dubbed the show. It was more than just a concert. They rocked us gently, they rocked us promptly, and they rocked us weirdly. We wouldn't have wanted it any other way.
Ween delivers something new and different with every album (normally from track to track, more accurately) and they do the exact same thing live and in concert. Actually, this may just be where they truly excel. If you're constantly craving something outside the norm, go see them when they paint your town brown. Never has a strange brew gone down so easily.
