NCAA... Er, BCS Roundup: And Then There Were Fewer

The BCS engaged in yet another shuffle towards one big, mucked up puddle of confusion this weekend, so rather than talk about the top 25 as a whole (since nothing really happened outside the top eight teams), I'll just go over what went down with those teams who still are (or recently were) relevant to the national title picture:
- Top-ranked LSU had an easy time this weekend playing poor Ole Miss, strengthening their hold on the top spot - for now. Sure, LSU is on a roll, but that stretch of four games earlier this season - against Florida, Auburn, Kentucky, and Alabama - were games that a true title contender would have put away early, and all of those games were decided on late scores. That was due in large part to mental errors, to the tune of 33 penalties and 330 penalty yards - way more than should be expected from the top ranked team in the nation.
- No. 2 Kansas and No. 4 Missouri continued to power through more helpless opponents. The Jayhawks got so far ahead that the backup quarterback was 9 - 9 for 101 yards and a score, and Missouri didn't have much trouble with Kansas State either. The Jayhawks and Tigers now control their own destiny at this point, with a game against each other followed by the winner moving on to the Big 12 title game and an excellent shot at the national title. Not too shabby for a pair of teams that weren't even ranked at the beginning of the season.
- No. 3 West Virginia is back where they started. Or where they belong, depending on whom you ask (and whether their couch is on fire). After overcoming a few more mistakes than is healthy to get past Cincinnati, they will make a road trip up to ESPN country to take on Connecticut in a game to decide the champion of the Big East.
- Ohio State salvaged their season - and put Lloyd Carr's career in question - with a win over Michigan, and move up to fifth in the BCS. They are unlikely to advance past a berth in the Rose Bowl, barring an avalanche of losses by the teams above them, but they could do a lot worse than "The Granddaddy of Them All."
- Arizona State slides up to sixth. Coming off a bye week, they play No. 11 USC on Thanksgiving.
- No. 7 Georgia put themselves further up in the BCS standings and also the SEC East with a win over Kentucky, but in order to clinch a date with LSU in the title game, they need Kentucky to beat Tennessee next weekend. That's right, Georgia beat Tennessee, and would have a better overall record, but the Vols would win the tiebreaker.
- No. 8 Virginia Tech took care of Miami with minimal difficulty, and are about back where they started, but they still must take care of Virginia to get to the ACC title game and a solid shot at a BCS bowl.
- Oregon fell down to ninth, lost their starting quarterback to a torn ACL (which will now require season-ending surgery) and lost their title dreams to an upstart Arizona Wildcats team. They will now have to rely on Ryan Leaf's younger brother Brady to hold it together against UCLA and Oklahoma State, two teams that look significantly less beatable without Dennis Dixon.
- Oklahoma knows exactly how Oregon feels, as they also lost their starting quarterback, Sam Bradford, then lost their 7-3 lead, then wound up losing the game to Texas Tech. Now ranked 10th, Oklahoma can still save some face by taking care of the Kansas-Missouri winner in the Big 12 title game (since they win any tiebreaker with Texas) but their national title hopes are out the window, and Bradford may or may not be available for that game.
