Book Review: The Trading Assistant's Assistant by Hillary DePiano
Published November 15, 2007
DePiano covers everything from the pros and cons of becoming a Trading Assistant and what the job entails, to expanding from becoming a Trading Assistant to running a Trading Post. In between, she gives us good advice on choosing the right usernames for branding and to reflect professionalism, creating our eBay profiles, and also on identifying clients who would use the services of a Trading Assistant, how to find them and how to let them find you, and more importantly, how to secure them as clients. In fact, having and finding the right clients are so important that DePiano devotes a whole chapter to this topic.
There's also a very important chapter about money matters. This chapter discusses the considerations of the fees and commissions a Trading Assistant charges his or her clients, and also the costs of eBay and PayPal fees, not to mention shipping fees as well. DePiano offers information to help us make our decisions on these matters, and advices us to use methods of payments with paper trails for proof of payments.
Another important chapter includes advice on having clear and specific terms, conditions, and policies. DePiano advices us to have agreements and contracts signed between our clients and us to make sure that each party understands their responsibilities and obligations, and to prevent misunderstandings or breech of contract. However, she acknowledges that the information she provides in the chapter is as a guide only, and any legal advice required should be consulted with an attorney.
Reading The Trading Assistant's Assistant prior to starting your business online will help you avoid a lot of mistakes that you might not even know you could make. While I sometimes found the writing to be a little dry, and there were a couple of times I had to reread confusing sentences before I understood them, the information contained in this little book is invaluable to anyone who's looking to start a business on eBay.
