NCAA Roundup: Husker Fans Seeing Red

  • 21st ranked Wake Forest took on the team they replaced in the rankings, struggled through an ugly game, and wound up a long field goal away from victory. Virginia took a victory to bounce back from that ugly loss to NC State, but just barely, needing a touchdown with just over two minutes remaining and a missed field goal from Wake as time expired to walk away victorious. The Deacons had the game won several times over, but kept being unable to finish anything they started. All three of their FG drives stalled out inside the Virginia 15-yard line, and they had a missed FG in the first half, as well (significant because K Sam Swank was one of the best in the country coming into this game). This game probably should have been 28-17 Wake, if not more, but instead the Deacons got stuck with a 17-16 loss.

    • Not enough happened to warrant a recap, but it's worth mentioning that Arkansas knocked off 23rd-ranked South Carolina behind some absolutely mind-boggling numbers. Darren McFadden carried the ball 35 times for 323 yards and a score, threw a 23-yard touchdown, and backup RB Felix Jones had another 12 carries for 163 yards and three touchdowns. Perhaps McFadden is back on the Heisman fringe?

    Next week doesn't look terribly thrilling. Georgia will play Auburn in what will be the 12th SEC game this season involving two ranked teams.
