Rock Chalk Jayhawk
Published November 04, 2007
Well, the college basketball season is upon us, and those Jayhawks are present at the top again, appearing in the number four ranking of the pre-season listing. However, that's not why I'm writing an article this weekend.
A short distance across campus from Allen Fieldhouse, another campus locale, namely Memorial Stadium, was absolutely rocking yesterday as the football team dismantled Nebraska. However, that is once again not why I'm sitting here writing an article.
I'm thinking more locally - at least in my world, anyway. I'm from Pittsburgh, so local to me is Western Pennsylvania, though the area is certainly known to some extent on a national level for its high school football. It isn't quite as rabid as the football in Texas or Florida, or maybe even California, but being fourth out of 50 isn't too terrible.
The playoffs began this weekend, and the Jeanette Jayhawks rolled to a 49-7 victory. They were led, as usual, by quarterback Terrell Pryor, who also just happens to be considered the number one recruit in the entire United States. I'm not surprised at the victory, the number one seed should have it pretty easy. It's their regular season that is so incredible.
Sure, they finished 9-0, that's how one gets to be the top seeded playoff team. It's how they did it that is so impressive. The Jeanette Jayhawks played nine games, and forced the mercy rule in every single one. The PIAA mercy rule states that in the second half, once a team's lead reaches 35 points, the clock runs continuously. Suffice it to say, Jeanette has pretty well pummeled every team they have played. Some interesting facts along the way:
- The Jayhawks played four home games this season, and won those games by a combined score of 244-6. They were far less impressive on the road, winning those five games by a measly 269-25 margin
- They punted a grand total of seven times all season - all of them in the first four games.
- The team had one game where they didn't score at least 50 points, and two games where their opponent scored at all.
Jeanette almost wound up introducing the mercy rule again in their first round playoff matchup, but they got off to a sluggish start and only led 28-0 at halftime rather than the 35-0 score that would have been necessary to start the clock rolling.
Terrelle Pryor had another impressive, if easy, night for any and all national recruiters he was performing for, tallying 157 yards rushing on only nine carries, and another 82 yards and a touchdown on only three passes. Pryor is currently trying to decide between Florida, Texas, Penn State,Tennessee, WVU, and Ohio State.
