TV Review: The Venture Bros. - Season 2, Episode 9
Published November 04, 2007
So, here’s a hypothetical situation: you are invited to the White House to be rewarded for your service as a heroic astronaut. What do you do? The answer is simple: kill the president! Colonel Bud Manstrong, who showed up in last season’s “Careers in Science,” is a milquetoast mama’s boy who is being forced by a chip stuck in his neck to follow the will of his dear, sweet, power hungry mother.
The Venture clan shows up to participate in the festivities, but Dr. Rusty Venture, always the opportunist, is planning to make the most of this night by schmoozing the president. It takes the Ventures and Brock a while to realize that Manstrong is being led to murder the PoTUS, but there is one hero who is going to stop this Manchurian candidate: Abraham Lincoln.
Now all you history buffs already know that Abraham Lincoln is very, very dead. His spirit is still around, though, so he needs to save another president from being the victim of an assassin’s bullet. His big mistake right off the bat is coming to Hank and Dean Venture (instead of Brock or the president’s secret service detail) to explain what has to be done. This leads to some of the funniest moments of the show with Hank and Dean not exactly understanding what Honest Abe’s talking about.
While Lincoln tries to develop a valid plan to save the day with Hank and Dean, Brock Sampson has some issues to work out with Col. Manstrong, and he also has to avoid a secret agent named Hauser and Bud Manstrong’s lush of a mother. Even with all the craziness going on, I didn’t enjoy this episode as much as I have the previous ones. It was a funny episode, but not very memorable. I tend to enjoy stories that expand on the Venture Bros. universe, and this is nearly a throwaway episode, not one that you must watch.
7 out of 10.
