DVD Review: Scrubs Season Six

I was one of those people who caught on late with Scrubs. I don’t watch a lot of television and while I listened to co-workers and friends discussing it, I didn’t start to watch until the reruns started it. But better late than never and I’ve discovered that Scrubs is good at anytime.

I know that a lot of people felt that season six was off just a little, that the magic from before was somehow missing. I don’t feel this way at all. I love Scrubs and season six, while it might not contain some of my favorite storylines or episodes, still contains the wild, wacky, and heartwarming characters that make this truly great TV.

I love how irreverent and wacky Scrubs can be while still pulling at the heartstrings and facing some really big issues like postpartum depression and relationship issues. And the opening for the season with JD (Zack Braff) getting almost married in Vegas and ending up on stage with the Blue Man Group set against OK Go’s “Here it Goes Again” is just fantastic. What better way to kick off the madness than that?

This season takes us through some interesting storylines. JD gets coworker/girlfriend Kim (Elizabeth Banks) pregnant. Jordon (Christa Miller-Lawrence), Dr. Cox’s (John C. McGinley) ex-wife, is pregnant again. Carla (Judy Reyes) and Turk (Donald Faison) have their baby. Elliot (Sarah Chalke) and Keith (Travis Schuldt) finally get engaged. But of course Elliot is her neurotic self and proceeds to micromanage the whole affair and in the end she begins to wonder if she made the right decision after all.

Among many other good things that season six contains, “My Musical” is one of them. This episode was nominated for an Emmy and for good reason. Simply brilliant and you just can’t mention season six without this one coming up. Then we have the episode that revolves around Bob Kelso (Ken Jenkins), with his fantasies a la An Officer and a Gentleman.

All sorts of things happen in season six and it‘s hard to fit them all in a review: Elliot gets proposed to, JD’s pregnant girlfriend breaks up with him, and Carla deals with a serious case of postpartum depression, as well as a much loved character passing, something that has never happened in Scrubs before. So if you haven’t seen this season yet or you just want to watch your favorite episodes again, pick up this DVD and pop some popcorn.

Season six comes with some great extras: commentary for the episodes which I always love because you learn so much more about the show, a making of the episode “My Musical”, deleted scenes, alternative endings, and outtakes. Not to mention the cliffhanger ending which just guarantees that everyone will be watching season seven. I know I am.
