TV Review: The Gospel View - BET's Sunday Best - No One Eliminated?
Published October 31, 2007
Jermaine Sellers serenaded the audience with “Keep Your Head to the Sky.” He has exceptional control over his vocals. His style sets him apart from the other contestants. He demonstrates his vibrato skills by sliding his voice gracefully through the musical staff.
With “You Bring Out the Best In Me,” Tasha Collins impressed the judges. She came out a little shaky at first but her rebounds from her off-notes were smooth. Though this wasn’t her best performance the judges applauded her ability to recuperate, noting that it is a technique usually mastered by the professionals.
Janice Collins sang “Mercy Mercy Me.” Her countenance was illuminated on stage. She apparently took the advice given to her by the judges last week and applied it to the fullest. She has a stardom quality about her that I hadn’t noticed before. Her vocals are deep, warm, and marked by grandiloquence.
The host, Kirk Franklin, called all the contestants to the stage. They all gathered on the platform practically shivering. Franklin called Emily Gomez and Jermaine Sellers to the forefront. Gomez and Sellers stood hand in hand silently praying. While Franklin announced that two would be eliminated, "aww's" filled the air. Franklin then added to his previous statement that two would be eliminated on next week’s show, no one would go home tonight. Cheers and applause overtook the atmosphere, as Gomez and Sellers took a collected sigh of relief (after collapsing to the floor).
Well there you have it; stay tuned for next week’s show to find out who will continue on to the next round and get one step closer to becoming BET’s Sunday Best.
