Xbox 360 Impressions: TimeShift

This week, TimeShift will drop onto the Xbox 360 and PC, with a PS3 version coming out by the end of the year. But in a year full of good games and FPS games like Halo 3, does TimeShift stack up?

The game's big selling point seems to be the time-manipulation controls, allowing you to slow down, pause, or even rewind time while continuing to move freely, much like in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time or Blinx: The Time Sweeper. Bringing up your powers can be done with the press of a button, and the game will select the best control to use. You can override this choice by pressing one of the face buttons on the 360 controller, though, giving you a good amount of control. When you slow down or pause time, you can also steal weapons out of your enemies' hands.

The enemy will respond to events that happened when time is manipulated. For example, stealing someone's gun while they're frozen and moving out of the way will cause them to wonder what just happened... right before you answer their question with a shotgun blast to the back of their head. It's not a huge thing, but it is a nice little touch. The A.I. also seems to be a bit aggressive in this game, as enemies hunted me down while I tried hiding to recover my health.

As for the graphics and design, it's pretty much your standard FPS "shades of grey and brown" design. That's not to say the game doesn't look great, but it's just a bit too generic in design. The same could be said for the game's sound, which is good, but at least from what I've played, nothing phenomenal.

As it stands, TimeShift has potential, but the biggest question is if it'll be anything more than your standard FPS with a time-manipulation gimmick. We'll find that out this week, when TimeShift finally hits store shelves after several delays.

I have a promotional copy and think its fantastic. The AI is the best I have seen (which is what seperates FPS's IMO) and the visuals are really nice. The time powers aren't a gimmick because you need to use them to overcome the odds and because of hyper-fast enemies and copters and others you meet later in the game.

Its definitely high production value and really a pretty game with a twist. Its also not another "sequel" which is all we see these days.

I've played the demo over XBL and I really enjoyed it. If you like FPS or FEAR you will have a blast. I don't think it will be a million selling but I do believe word of mouth will propel it to profitability. Hell if VIVA Pinata can make it this game can.
