Book Review: The Naked Roommate and 107 Other Issues You Might Run Into in College

Harlan Cohen graduated high school with no fear of college. His older brothers had adapted to college with no trouble, and he expected to have an equally easy time of it. To his surprise, the first year was so difficult that he ended up transferring colleges and starting his freshman year all over again. By taking a completely different approach to his freshman year do-over, Cohen was able to find his niche on campus.

Years later, after becoming the youngest and only male syndicated advice columnist with his Help Me, Harlan! column, Cohen would revisit those troublesome years and sift through the do’s and don’ts of college life. After a great deal of research and the probable collegiate flashbacks, Cohen wrote The Naked Roommate: and 107 Other Issues You Might Run Into in College, a go-to college guidebook covering a wide range of issues college students may face.

The Naked Roommate took nearly ten years of research to develop. Cohen visited about 300 college campuses across the nation and collected stories and tips from students of all walks of life. This most recent edition, released in early 2007, is an updated version of the first book containing new tips relevant to the ever-changing college experience.

These new tips have been added to help keep on top of the college lifestyle and include things that many former college students did not deal with, such as Facebook, Myspace, and the budding concept of “sexile,” where a roommate is exiled from the room so the other can get a little action. By planning on frequent new editions to keep up with these new collegiate trends, Cohen ensures that his book will help students for many years to come.

In The Naked Roommate, Cohen presents a straightforward and unbiased look at the various issues college students may face. The tips span a wide range of topics – from navigating social circles or rushing a Greek house to dealing with drinking and drugs on campus, Cohen looks at every facet of college life. He covers the basics of roommates, college classes, and the parts of college no one mentions in the glossy brochures. From orientation to that long-sought graduation, this book has all the advice a freshman needs to safely and successfully navigate those four vital years.

Sounds like a fun read. Yes, softening advice with irreverent humor is always an excellent plan.
