Music Review: The Donnas - Bitchin'
Published October 16, 2007
I suppose, given that the Donnas lack a certain male appendage necessary for the moniker to truly apply, it would be inappropriate to call their music “cock rock.” (Is it even PC to use the phrase “cock rock” anymore, anyway? I’m not sure.) But you get the picture. The lyrics on the Donnas’ new album, Bitchin’, objectify men, contain blatant celebrations of animal lust and detail hellacious bouts of serious partying.
One of the catchiest tunes on Bitchin’ is “Wasted.” Singer Brett Anderson purrs, “I can’t sleep, can’t even breathe, you’re a devious distraction/When you put your hands on me you start a chemical reaction … The first time I saw your face, I got wasted on your love.” Allison Robertson’s fiery guitar work is an impressive accompaniment to the savvily spat out vocals.
“Love You Till It Hurts” has a sultry base line, killer guitar riffs, I’m-the-boss lyrics and oh, yeah, some cowbell. “Let me touch you,” Anderson croons, “I’m gonna play with your emotions …”
The Donnas make it clear they came to party. No risk of emotional attachment, just a few drinks, some good music to dance to, and, of course, a few superior male specimens to entertain them for the evening.
At 45 minutes, Bitchin’ is certainly not the lengthiest album ever released, and only about half of the tracks really pop. The rest are all filled with plenty of technical prowess, but not much musical variety. Anderson, Robertson, bassist Maya Ford and drummer Torry Castellano play well together, but it would be nice to hear some experimentation with different styles. Don’t get me wrong; I love you-know-what-rock as much as the next gal. But at some point, the songs begin to run together a bit.
That said Bitchin’ is a great choice for anyone interested in edgy arena rock, screaming metal riffs, and/or a celebration of traditional rock ‘n’ roll trappings from the other side of the chromosomal fence, for once. Catch The Donnas on tour this fall and get ready to fling those boxer-briefs onto the stage in a flurry of swoonage.

And you call yourself a... Wait, just kidding!
"Anderson, Robertson, bassist Maya Ford and drummer Torry Castellano play well together, but it would be nice to hear some experimentation with different styles."
Well, their CD "Spend the Night" sold like hotcakes while their follow-up "masterpiece" (IMO) sold poorly. If you haven't heard "Gold Medal", give it a try. As musicians I feel they should be extremely proud of the "Gold Medal" effors - as salesmen I'm afraid the music business is like the circus business: "You will never go broke underestimating the American public."
Addition:
a) The Donnas are a tremendously entertaining live; if one likes even a few songs on any of their CD's, I highly recommend they make the effort to see them in person.
b) Amanda, I'll buy you (and a friend) an Indian meal and two Donnas tickets if they ever come to your town!

Great review. I haven't really been into The Donnas in a few years but I'm glad they still are doing what they do best...probably better that 80% of the rock bands out there now.
