DVD Review: Blades Of Glory

Blades of Glory is the story of world-class figure skaters Chazz Michael Michaels (Will Ferrell) and Jimmy MacElroy (Jon Heder) who are not only arch rivals but also have polar opposite personalities.  Jimmy is generally given to displays of flamboyance whereas Chazz is macho with a lot of bravado.

The two loathe each other so much so that one day they come to blows on the podium while receiving gold medals. This infraction leaves them both banned from the sport for life.  However a few years later an obsessed fan of Jimmy’s finds a loophole in the rules — they can resume their careers, provided they're willing to bury the hatchet and perform as partners in the pairs competition.

Coaxed back to the ice by Jimmy's coach (Craig T. Nelson), they resentfully agree to the alliance and start training to take on the reigning champs, the brother-sister team of Stranz (Will Arnett) and Fairchild (Amy Poehler) Van Waldenberg who will stop at nothing to sabotage Michaels' and  MacElroy's shot at the gold!

This movie succeeds primarily because of the comedic talent in this film, starting with the rivalry between Michaels and MacElory, the awkwardness because they have to do routines typically performed by a male and female (and they don’t want to come across as gay), to Poehler and Arnett’s insanity as the Van Waldenberg siblings (who appear to do things that siblings shouldn’t do, recalling the actions of Angelina Jolie and her brother a few years back). Blades of Glory is worth your viewing time.

There are many funny extras on this DVD including:

"Alternate Takes" which is one of the best extras on the disc, includes strange and witty variations on existing material. It's almost all Ferrell, and shows how quick he can be coming up with alternate lines of dialogue.

"Return to Glory: The Making of Blades": This starts out as an authentic production documentary with the actors merely having fun with questions. But before the end, the questions themselves are funny as an unseen and unrehearsed interviewer gets varying responses from the in-costume cast members.
