She could be your wife, your mother, your sister... or your daughter. The American Cancer Society estimates that 178,480 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in American women this year. Another 40,460 women are expected to die from this disease in 2007. Advances in both detection and treatment have caused breast cancer mortality to decrease since 1990, but breast cancer is still a leading cause of cancer deaths in women, with only lung cancer claiming more victims.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure, founded in 1982, is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of women who are living with breast cancer and supporting research on prevention and treatment. This month, to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Susan G. Komen for the Cure is teaming up with Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and MGM Home Entertainment to offer movie lovers the opportunity to indulge in their passion and support breast cancer research at the same time.

DVDs for the Cure is a promotion that will raise money through the sale of a specially selected and packaged group of DVDs. Fox and MGM will donate 50 cents from the sale of each DVD, with a guaranteed minimum contribution of $250,000.

The following titles are available in special pink packaging as part of the DVDs for the Cure promotion:

  • An Affair to Remember
  • A Walk in the Clouds
  • Entrapment
  • Ever After
  • In Her Shoes
  • Legally Blonde
  • Mermaids
  • Moulin Rouge
  • Never Been Kissed
  • Say Anything
  • Thelma &Louise
  • There's Something About Mary
You can find more information about the promotion (and buy a movie or two) at DVDs for the Cure. You can find out more about the good work that the Susan G. Komen foundation does at the foundation's website, and you can learn more about breast cancer at the American Cancer Society's website.

Since we don't know how to prevent breast cancer, the best way to fight it is through early detection. Regular breast self-examination, yearly check-ups by a health care provider, and regular mammography screening should be a part of every woman's health routine. Take care of yourself. And enjoy the movie.
