Attraction Review: Universal's Halloween Horror Nights
Published October 07, 2007
Every year, Universal Studios hosts their Halloweeen Horror Nights (HHN). Haunt World Magazine lists them as number ten in the country. I attended opening night, October 5th. I went last year, as well, and I promise this year is twenty times better.
Last year, the theme was a psycho director loose on a back lot. The theme was good, but this year's theme is far better. It is well known that the horror genre was created at Universal studios. It all started with Phantom of the Opera in the 1920s.
For nine decades, horror film after horror film was created, filmed, and released. Universal decided to honor the best of the best: Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, and the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. A common subject in the world is whether or not violence in movies contributes to the violence in today's world. Enter Jack. Jack is a scary clown who is busy terrorizing guests at Universal. He follows the example of movies.
Something special about HHN is the tram ride. Guests are actually able to get off the tram and look around. Last year was the first year guests could, so it was a little rough. The main problem with last year's tram was that I literally waited 45 minutes to get on. This year, opening night, I got on the first tram, waiting about two minutes. When I got off, it was a little more crowded, probably a twenty-minute wait. I don't know how it will be on the other nights, but I suggest getting on early in the night.
Last year I said the tram needed work. It wasn't that it was horrible; rather, it just wasn't worth the wait. Universal has improved it a lot. The tour guides were really nice. This year, guests visited the Bates Motel, Norman's House (new), Crystal Lake (new), and the War of the Worlds set (this was converted into Elm Street). Guests meet Jack along the way when they go into the set of the third Mummy movie. This part, however, is on the tram. Still, don't miss the tram this year.
The best part was the mazes. Universal added four new mazes this year. Oh, bless their hearts. They are:

I too am wondering if this is an Orlando review. I went last night and what Tram are they reffering to? I didnt see any.
The lines/waiting times were 90-120 minutes. In 5.5 hours we actually got to see 2 15 minute shows, 2 rides and the CrystalLake thing which you walk through in approx 1 minute after waiting almost 1 hour.
At least in past years you could go on the regular rides which they now have closed off.
A complete waste of time and money.
I am talking about the Hollywood one. Sorry that Orlando was bad!
Went to HHN on October 6 and I was not happy. It was my first and last time. Not worth the time and money to stand in 1 hour lines to go through lame mazes that last 5 minutes. The Terror Tram is a joke, you ride into the back lot, get off and walk through scenes from movies that have had a horror theme thrown together in 10 minutes. I have been through haunted houses on my block that have had more time and effort put into them. The scare actors need some acting lessons and those Knotts Scary Farm rejects in the skeleton outfits and chainsaws need to stop acting like a**holes to the paying public. Half of the employees are rude, use foul language and seem to dislike their jobs. The whole scary part of this experiance is the prices for meals and anything to drink. You will do alot of walking looking for something worth being scared by. If you want a place to go, I suggest Knotts Scary Farm.
Hey Knotts Scary Farm Rules I'm sorry to burst your buble but EVERY Halloween review has UNiversal Horror Nights Hollywood ranked over Knotts Scary Farm, AND Universal Orlando! All the people I have talked to said Knotts is so bad that there attendence is way down this yer due to everyone going to Universal Horror nights! The mazes at HHN is so much more detailed and longer than Knotts! Overall there is no argument which haunt is better! Halloween Horror Nights is a notch above the rest!
If you want to waiste your money this is the place to go. Everything is horrible about it. From waiting in long lines to be hearded through a haunted house that lasts 5 minutes. All of the employees are miserable like they hate their job. Nothing is scary the acting sucks, they do not know how to scare people. They used to walk around the streets and scare people, they do not do this anymore, which was what made the event fun. They also love to trespass anyone for anything without giving a clear enough reason. They take your money and tell you to leave, how nice is that? Along with that I think they are going to be sued im sure they have already due to safety hazards throughout the park.
Do NOT GO unless you want to waiste your time and money, security is on top of you like a hawk at this event. The event sucks all the way around.. take my advice and dont waiste your money. They need to stop this event and quit stealing peoples money.
Hey jason are u crazy knotts haunt is like 100 times better than hhn. HHN only has 4 mazes and 1 of them they open every day. Knotts has like over 10 mazes and a lot of people scarin u every where u go. HHN stole knotts ida of sliders and there sliders suck big time. Dam are u crazy
where is knotts scary farm?
and the regular rides [dueling dragons, incredible hulk] aren't open this year?
Last years theme wasn't the director, that was HHN 13, last year was the Sweet Sixteen where Jack brought back some of the old villains.
Hey GA, HHN at Universal Orlando is only at Universal Studios now
The event at Knott's Berry Farm and Universal Studios are different. Knott's has more mazes, but the quality is very low. There is little attention to detail. Universal has fewer mazes, but the quality of each one is much higher. It's this quality of mazes and scare zones that makes the Universal event the more interesting of the two ... not to mention more enjoyable. (And it's the reason why all the serious theme park critics / blogger are recommending Universal's event over Knott's this year).
The event at Knotts is popular for being popular. It has more history, so people just go there without thinking. But if you're discerning, you'll enjoy Universal's event more.
Don't just take it from me -- read all the reviews online.
Or for a small insight, check out the two events' websites and you'll start to see the difference. Knott's site uses a scroll-bar set-up that's 8 years outdated and there's no video. This dated feeling is a good representation of their event.
A complete money trap if you ask me....$11 to park on top of the $35 to get in and then another $35.99 if you want to skip the horrendous lines, every attraction had at least a 60 minute wait with closer to 90 for freddy and jason. every where you look is someone selling $5 jello shooters in large syringes...I really dont think they limit the number of tickets sold. Crowded and boring if you ask me. But people pay it, so they will continue to get away with it...Maybe if they had about 5 more haunted houses the lines would not be as bad.
there are not only 4 haunted houses there are like 8-9
This is the Hollywood Halloween event NOT the Orlando one. I heard the Orlando one sucked but Universal Hollywood was great. I just went last night. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre maze was the best. Very intense and just like the movie, but the people I was with stupidly brought a ten year old with us and he got so scared we were pulled out of thing early. But it was very intense and realistic. The other mazes werent half as scary to me but I dont scare easily. But I hate chainsaws.
Knotts kind of sucks now. It all looks like cardboard and I never even jump at all. Very cheesy.
Well here's my opinion.
For me, Knotts was an every year kind of thing because they dominated Halloween every year. Now, with the presence of Universal, they have some competition. While there are fewer mazes at Universal, I feel the quality of the mazes was superb. People behind me were saying the same thing about the quality. The Texas Chainsaw was probably the best maze, but the other two were also great as well. I didn't do House of Horrors since I've been in there and figured it would be the same as before but with more scareactors. The Bill and Ted show as great in my opinion. THe Dirty Tricks and Dirty magic show sucked in my opinion. It just doesn't fit the theme of Halloween. Slaughterworld was cool to watch. Chucky's Insult Imporium was also great. He was on fire when I went. The Terror Tram was ok, but it was cool to walk around the sets. Knotts has more mazes, but they are very low quality. It'll be interesting to see if Universal takes control of Halloween in the upcoming years. I wonder what Universal will do next year?
We changed our holiday plans at great expense to include a visit to Orlando for the Halloween Horror Night. On top we paid £35 (equivalent $70) for the tickets in UK before we left. What a waste of time, money and effort. Park was overcrowded and we got pushed shoved and trodden on. The most horrific thing about the whole evening was the queues - 70 and 80 mins waiting to experience 3/4 mins of total rubbish. We only managed to ride the curse of the mummy and go around the thing haunted house. The park was too overcrowded and we could hardly move around. We left when someone bumped into my daughter and stamped his size 12's on her foot causing a nasty injury. Never again!!!

Is this review for HHN at Orlando? Because I attended the one in Orlando on Oct.5th, and I did not think it was all that great. It was hyped up so much, that I expected to be really scared. There wasn't anyone jumping out and scaring you throughout the park like I was told there was. The Chainsaw house and Freddy house were pretty good, but I have to say that all the other attractions were LAMO with a capital L! And Jacks' carnival of carnage was not great either. It may be an adult attraction, but I didn't need the foul language from Jack and the minibars on every corner. For goodness sake, there were women trying to sell you "shooters" in large syringes as you were leaving the park. Just what you need before you head to your car and get on the road! It was, in my opinion, a waste of money!
