Book Review: God? by Chris DeSalvo
Published October 04, 2007
Both science and religion have been capturing the hearts and minds of humankind since the beginning of time. I’m not sure when they became separate entities, but after reading this book, I’m convinced that they truly are incomplete on their own. I believe that God (religion) and science go hand in hand. I firmly applaud Albert Einstein who said, “Science without religion is lame. Religion without science is blind.”
One problem that I found with the book is that it looks self-published. I hate to complain about the look of a book, but I had a hard time taking this book too seriously simply because it is self-published and the cover design is, well, boring. The author seems somewhat vague – her name is not even listed on the cover (or back side) of the book, nor can you find any author information on the website. I’m not sure what DeSalvo’s reasoning is for this, but it makes me trust the information in the book a bit less when I can’t do a bit of background research on the author to see other writings, opinions, etc.
Another issue I had with the book is that while it seems to be well-researched, it would be improved by the additions of some quotes from experts in the subject – from both sides, of course. I also would have liked to have seen some personal examples or stories from lives of people who believe one way or the other. I think it would add the personal touch that it lacks and would have helped it to read less like a textbook.
While this book isn’t perfect, I would recommend this book to someone who wants to examine the evidence on both sides of the issue. It will offend opponents on both sides, and yet in the end I believe that both science and religion are on the same side – it’s us as flawed beings that create the division.
