Winless After Four, The Dolphins' Season Seems Tanked
Published October 02, 2007
Can anyone here play this game? If you live in Miami and you play for the 0-4 Dolphins, the answer, thus far this season, is a resounding: NO! Let’s break it down on each side of the ball to see what's going on here:
Offense
Four games into the season and the offense ranks at the middle of the pack — 17th of 32. It would seem to follow, then, that the Dolphins should at least be near the .500 mark. But digging into the turnover numbers reveals some ugly numbers; seven interceptions and two fumbles, not the worst in the league, but it does give them a negative-six turnover differential. Hard to beat teams when your offense gives away the ball faster then your defense can take it back. At this point in the year, the Dolphins have been outscored an average of 30-20.
Those seven interceptions might be a bit easier to swallow if they were at least equalized by touchdowns, but with his 139 attempts, quarterback Trent Green’s only mustered five scoring passes. At 37, Green should be put out to pasture and the Dolphins need to make acquiring a quality quarterback a top priority – Daunte Culpepper, how does it feel? Green has an overall QB rating of 72.9, a far cry from his career average of 86.9, definitely time to put him away and let someone else play.
While the running game certainly needs to step it up to offset the passing attack, by no means is this squad horrible. Running back Ronnie Brown is averaging 5.2 yards per carry on 60 attempts thus far with three rushing touchdowns. Not spectacular, but solid all the same. Brown’s also the team’s second largest receiving contributor pulling down 20 for 248 yards surpassed only Chris Chambers' 23 receptions for 323 yards.

The defense is where I'm most surprised as well. In all my pre-season thinking about where the Dolphons would be and such, I kept saying to myself "well, at least the defense is solid."

I really over-estimated the Dolphins this year. I didn't think they'd be great, but I thought their defense would be better, and I had some faith in Trent Green. But, 0-4? Ouch is right!
