Book Review: The Simpsons Masterpiece Gallery - A Big Book of Posters by Matt Groening
Published August 29, 2007
I’ve always liked to hang posters on my walls. In my younger days I plastered my bedroom walls with posters of Star Wars, fast cars and bikini-clad women. But there comes a time in every man’s life when he can’t decorate with thin paper homages to pop culture and the female form anymore.
So, my posters now sit in my garage.
But seriously, I’m 33 now, married with two kids. Scotch taping pieces of paper to the wall just doesn’t hold the appeal it used to. That’s not to say I still don’t love them, especially when they are of my favorite things, like The Simpsons.
Ever since The Simpsons debuted as shorts on the Tracy Ullman Show, I’ve been a fan. Now thanks to The Simpsons Masterpiece Gallery: A Big Book of Posters, I can indulge in this guilty pleasure of mine and not make my house look like a 12-year-old lives here.
How can you go wrong when you’re talking about artwork featuring the best animated series of all time? This book is a collection of nice, oversized posters depicting your favorite animated Springfield family and all of their castmates in lots of fun situations. Highlights include: movie spoofs, like “Homer the Hutt” (Star Wars ala Simpsons), Forrest Gump and Lady and the Tramp; the infamous Bartman; and three separate posters that show what Homer, Bart and Ralph Wiggum are thinking.
Of course, no Simpsons book would be complete without seeing Homer in his underwear (three posters cover that topic), Bart mooning (which is a bit tame after the Simpson movie) or wedgies being given.
This book goes right next to my The Star Wars Poster Book, which contains 350 prints from artwork Star Wars movies around the globe. I hope more poster books like the two aforementioned are released because I have some bookshelf space, but no wall space.
