Hot Topic: Persistent Reading Decisions
Published August 29, 2007
As I got a little older, I pretty much went by the suggestions of friends or whatever was lying around. I developed a nice hankering for anything by Judith Krantz; the woman had an eye for detail, told interesting stories about fashion, filmmaking, and advertising, and wrote not just good sex scenes but delved into the kinky. Tastefully, of course. And I find that once I hook onto a particular author, I seek out their other titles. A good example is the forementioned Krantz, or the author that started the whole discussion, Joe Finder. I signed up to review his novel Company Man two years ago, and have been trying to grab every fiction piece he’s written. (Including the newly released Power Play. Yes, this was a plug.)
As the Mondo men know, I could go on and on. But I do need to mention a little about my non-fiction tastes. I do tend to stick with fiction, I firmly believe in escapism. However, when I do need to be present, and learn some stuff, I’ve found some interesting things to weave into my hours:
- Everything Bad is Good for You by Steven Johnson
- Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim by David Sedaris
- Plan B; Further Thoughts on Faith by Annie Lamott
- The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion
- Body of Secrets: Anatomy of the Ultra-Secret National Security Agency by James Bamford
Just a few that are calling my name.

I second that. also, i'm SO lookin out for "Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim"!!
I really like it Duke - it's the first Sedaris I've read, either Amy or David.
Corduroy is actually my least favorite Sedaris book. But it is still good. I love, LOVE Me Talk Pretty One Day, which is all about David moving to France and trying to adjust (though come to think of it I may favor that one as I read it just after I moved to France and was trying to adjust.)
He's done loads of stuff on NPR which you can stream from their site.
Fantastic job all round, and I a character in this week's drama, no less!

Aaron, you did a super swell job with this. Thank you man!
