The Tuesday Morning Purchase: August 21, 2007 - Rilo Kiley, Flaming Lips, Peter Brotzmann

Sometimes, it's fun to stumble across music based purely on my own cultural guideposts. I mean, take the first entry down below. It's some ambient electronica that'll end up in my collection only because of the label name: Hydrogen Dukebox. See, I thought it said Hydrogen Jukebox, which happens to be the title of a Philip Glass opera. I figured that a label clever enough to swipe that name just might be worth looking into. Turns out that it's pretty interesting stuff, so my dyslexic mistake wasn't a total waste.

Metamatics - My Favourite Kind of Irrelevance: Best of Metamatics (Hydrogen Dukebox)/Electronica

Jukebox... Dukebox... whatever!

Peter Brötzmann - The Complete Machine Gun Sessions (Atavistic)/Jazz

The complete sessions of one of the most intense examples of saxophone abuse ever created. Not for the faint of heart.

The Flaming Lips - U.F.O's At The Zoo - The Legendary Concert In Oklahoma City (WEA/Reprise)/Rock

I don't know how I feel about these MVI discs, but the extra features (including a folder of hi-rez MP3 files) sure didn't hurt. Even more amazing was the fact that this disc actually played in my old piece of junk DVD player. Good music karma there! Oh, the music! A fine example of The Flaming Lips burning the house down at a hometown concert.

Rilo Kiley - Under the Blacklight (Warner Bros.)/Rock

A weird record. A great record. Get it. Oh, maybe you should read a review first.

Twinemen - Twinetime (Hi-N-Dry)/Rock

Twinemen inherit a direct musical bloodline from Mark Sandman and Morphine. They are hard to describe but unforgettable once you've experienced them.

I'm hoping the Lips DVD - I mean "MVI" will work okay in my DVD player. The Rush MVI had some annoying problems like stuttering through scenes and jumping back to the beginning, but it worked just fine in my computer, so I figure it must be our 8 year old DVD player and not the disc itself.

You know what your computer would say, right? "This sort of thing has cropped up before and it has always been due to human error." (Thanks, HAL 9000 - The most dangerously mundane computer ever.)

Curious...I'm reading quite mixed reviews for the Rilo Kiley...

P.S. Peter Brotzmann RULZ - but how many sittings will it take you to get through his complete sessions? (How many sittings does it take you to get through one session?)

Love the RK album... a second opinion is on the way, but Saleski's is highly endorsed.

"Peter Brotzmann is one of the greatest [tenor players] alive."
