DVD Review: Joe Rogan Live

I loved the show NewsRadio. It is probably one of my favorite shows of the past 20 years. More specifically I loved Joe Rogan as Joe Garrelli, the office handyman. He was snarky, dry, and very funny… which is impressive when put up next to Dave Foley and Phil Hartman.

On the flip side, though, I hate Joe Rogan as the host of Fear Factor. The show is ridiculous; it is the basest of reality game shows, and Rogan is trite as he encourages contestants. You can see it written clearly on his visage how silly he thinks the whole thing is.

So, I suppose by the law of averages I am pretty in the middle on Mr. Rogan. Fear Factor cancels out NewsRadio, which is a crying shame. Enter Joe Rogan Live, a 55-minute stand-up comedy routine, a world in which Rogan has over 15 years of experience.

Sadly, experience does not always a hilarious comedy show make. His act is nothing but what feels like an eternity of profanity-laced screaming. Don’t get me wrong; I have no problem with curse words, dirty jokes about sex and drugs, and general debauchery. I can watch Eddie Izzard, Ryan Belleville, and Jim Gaffigan all day. Rogan, though, seems to be doing all of these things only for shock value. Perhaps he has been too influenced by his daytime hosting job.

Joe Rogan is charming when he is telling stories, but when he gets amped up and starts flailing around and hollering, watching it borders on the uncomfortable. There is a bit, which wears on for entirely too long, in which Rogan talks about the beginning of his time hosting Fear Factor. When he first laments the show lasting longer than he ever could have imagined, he reminds you of the guy you've been best friends with for ten years. He is likeable and funny. But when he begins to berate contestants on the show, his face contorts into an ugly snarl, he stomps about the stage, and screams into the microphone. The act loses its humor and becomes quickly stale.

In another missed laugh, Rogan discusses Noah's Ark and the many holes in that particular Biblical story. While the concept of the bit is very funny, he loses this viewer when he begins - again - screaming just for the sake of screaming. It is certainly not that the man is not funny — it is his delivery. Twenty minutes into the whole affair I felt harassed and annoyed and found it hard to watch the rest.

NewsRadio, Fear Factor, and averages aside, I highly recommend skipping this one.

Kate Harding's brain contains an abnormal amount of entertainment (read: useless) knowledge. It is the reason that she did not do better in school and why she often can't remember why she walked into a room. Kate can be found managing a non-profit art gallery and talking endlessly about music.

"it is the basest of reality game shows"? what does that mean? do you mean basis? i'm not smart as you...please explain!

Basically there really isn't much brain activity behind it, it is all shock and awe silliness. A base level show as opposed to the other reality game shows which do require some thought processes. Not knocking the fans, base can be fun, but I cannot be counted among the fans of it or any other reality show...

Oh yeah, good review. Never been much of a Rogan fan, though I did like his confrontations with The Bad Astronomer on Penn Teller's defunct radio show where thy had "discussions" over the moon landing hoax (Rogan believes it was a hoax).

I think Chris summed it up pretty nicely for me. There's not really any skill behind it. It's eat this gross thing and dangle from this high building. I'm not a huge reality fan, but if I'm going to watch a reality game show, I'd rather watch something like Survivor (where they have to play off of each other and provide for themselves) or Project Runway or So You Think You Can Dance (where they have a marketable skill already).

Hope that cleared it up!

Your review stinks. Rogan is only unfunny to uppity women who think they are better than everyone else.

Well, "woman hater," to each his own, I suppose. I can say pretty categorically that I'm not uppity, but again, "eye of the beholder" and such.

I will put in here that I watched the DVD with my 27-year-old sports fanatic, Jackass-loving husband and several of his friends. They make rude jokes all the time. After 20 minutes they all got up and went outside to have a beer. They never did watch the rest of it.

I truely believe, though, that comedy is such a personal like or dislike. Glad you enjoyed it.

Wow. horrible review.. I watched this with some of my friends and laughed my ass off.. we all thought it might have been some of the best comedy we've seen for awhile. If you look around the internet, you seem to be one of the few to think Joe's comedy sucks. The fact that you even mention Jim Gaffigan explains so much.

"They make rude jokes all the time." ok.. ok.. stop exposing yourself, we all know you how you like your comedy.

People, this is reviewed by a married woman that hates loud noises. Check amazon's perfect score before listening to this red state.

I had no idea you were a state. You must have a really big keyboard!

Also, Fear Factor is the suck.
