Book Review: The Simpsons Masterpiece Gallery by Matt Groening
Published July 25, 2007
So, you're a huge fan of The Simpsons. You've watched every single episode and own all the DVDs, quote every line by heart, and have even visited your local Kwik-E-Mart. And of course, you've purchased your tickets early for the long awaited and overdue film opening July 27th. But while you wait anxiously to see Homer, Bart, and the rest of the family on a 50-foot screen, what will you do to pass the time in between now and Friday?
One thing you can do is look through a coffee table book. No, I'm not talking about your typical coffee table book from some frilly frou frou museum. I'm talking about the coolest coffee table book ever, featuring your favorite family.
The Simpsons Masterpiece Gallery: A Big Book of Posters features 50 beautifully (and comically) drawn posters by Simpsons guru Matt Groening. While some of the art is a little plain (Bart on a skateboard has been done so many times), most are guaranteed to make you snicker. For example, there is the view into Homer's brain, which includes a section that remembers his children's names as "Bart, Lisa, and mini-Lisa". Or Ralph Wiggum's version of the Pledge of Allegiance, which goes:
I fudge a legions,
To the flack,
Of the enlightened
Skates of a merry cup.
And two derrick public,
Four witches dance,
One Asian,
Underground,
In the visible,
With liver tea and
Just us for owl.
Some of my favorite posters are the parodies of scenes from famous films such as Forrest Gump and Return of the Jedi. The funniest in my opinion is their take on The Graduate, with Waylon Smithers in the Dustin Hoffman role staring at a bare, bony, wrinkled, wart-ridden leg. Three guesses as to the owner of that leg!
The Simpsons Masterpiece Gallery is fun, funny, and a great addition to any Simpsons fan's collection. Get the book and leaf through it while you're standing in line at the movie theater.
