Concert Review: Judas Rising (Judas Priest tribute) w/ In Question, C U Next Thursday, Bleeding the Broken (July 7,2007)

There once was a band that was in search of a name. They would meet each week to practice. It was always the same day and the practice session would always end the same way, they would tell each other: "See you next Thursday." And so it was, a band name was born.

If you couldn't already guess, this was the band I was there to see. A friend, and co-worker, is in the band as the lead guitarist, and since I have never seen him play since I've known who he was (I saw him years ago in a different band). So, there I was just there to have a little fun on a Saturday night, and they did not disappoint.

This show's lineup went through some last minute changes. The original headliner was an Ozzy Osborne tribute, S.A.T.O., a band that puts on a really good show and features a singer that actually sounds like Ozzy. Well, for some reason they dropped off the card and Judas Rising took over the headlining slot. In addition to that, a couple of bands that were scheduled to play at a smaller club in the same complex, The Chance Complex, were moved down into the bigger theater to lead off the show. By the time I had gotten there, the first band had already played, and the second was getting set to go.

The first band that I saw was called Bleed the Broken. They looked awfully young, If they averaged 18 years old I'd be surprised. Their sound was a blend of screamo and melodic death, although I think that makes it sound better than it was. They definitely played well together and had the whole melodic playing down, but the songwriting was a little bland and the singer needs to turn around and remember where the audience is. He spent most of his time looking to the other band members and the back of the stage. The drummer, working behind a very small kit, was quite impressive, the best of the bunch. He got a lot of mileage out of that kit, and from my brief exposure to them, has the brightest future. It will be interesting to see how they progress as they mature.

Now it was time for the band who was my only reason for being there, C U Next Thursday. After the set, I asked my friend if he wanted a serious review or a fun one, he responded: "I don't care, rip me apart." The serious review would be too easy as it would consist of simply: They were awful. However, that would be besides the point. This band, one of many he has played with, is a cover, scratch that, an unoriginal band that plays covers.

Their setlist was comprised of an eclectic mix of bands that you would likely never see together, but they were not true covers in the sense that they were attempting to sound anything like the originals. Rather, they were all put through a garage punk/bar band filter. Their set consisted of songs like Lita Ford's "Kiss Me Deadly," Fear's "Livin in the City," Bon Jovi's "You Give Love a Bad Name," Billy Idol's "Rebel Yell," a Rancid track I did not recognize, before closing with "Blitzkrieg Bop." Now, you could not call it, by any stretch, good. Especially when my friend missed as many notes as he did. Still, they was an energy, an aura of fun that surrounded them and infected the small crowd that was there. This is exactly the kind of band you would expect to see in a smokey bar filled with empty beer bottles. You bring the beer, they bring the fun. Definitely infectious, absolutely fun, but nowhere near good.

One of many review in my 22 years as a lead vocalist. Always remember kid, jealousy is the most profuond form of flattery and smart people don't brag. Nice attempt at best.

#2 — July 14, 2007 @ 09:32AM — Leslie Bohn

Mr. Bravo:

Do you really think others are jealous of your status as lead singer of a Judas Priest cover band?
Reality check,
Leslie

#3 — July 15, 2007 @ 03:49AM — Sidney

Get real! Who wrote this about the almighty Bravster? you gotta got your ears checked!

#4 — July 15, 2007 @ 03:50AM — Tammy

#7 — July 17, 2007 @ 23:12PM — Mr. Holland

Look who's talking? This guy personally attacks everyone. But, when it comes time to get attacked, he can't take whay he dishes out. Not a man to me. Rock on Rising!

#8 — July 18, 2007 @ 18:36PM — Chicken Parm Girl

People like Leslie need to get a life. Reality check you say? The reality is that Judas Rising rocks and Dino Bravo the lead singer is awesome, talented and well so cute too (I want to sleep in his hair) Judas Rising is nummero uno Leslie, so get over it!

#9 — July 18, 2007 @ 23:46PM — Alex Durant

Interesting band that Judas. I love them so much!!

#10 — July 22, 2007 @ 15:45PM — Chris Beaumont [URL]

I gotta ask, why so much love for a cover band? Your time would better be served listening to the real thing.

#11 — July 22, 2007 @ 23:42PM — Dr. Alex Durant

You obviously don't know, that IS the real thing. Try finding them. You can't get any better. Ever. Bravo Rules! You drool!

#12 — July 23, 2007 @ 06:46AM — Chris Beaumont [URL]

You are kidding, right? I hope? You do understand what a "cover band" is right? By definition that is not the real thing.

#13 — July 23, 2007 @ 18:48PM — Dr Alex

Young man you have much to learn. They are all laughing at you.

#14 — July 23, 2007 @ 19:06PM — Chris Beaumont [URL]

Actually, everyone I know is laughing at you.

Can you honestly say you would rather listen to Judas Rising than Judas Priest? If so, I feel sorry for you.

#15 — July 23, 2007 @ 23:41PM — Harry Booth

Screw this writer! Everyone knows Rising rules! This is coming from a no-name, none-gettin' never played an instrument in his life jealous fool.

#16 — July 24, 2007 @ 00:08AM — Commander Dack

I am king dack and I say Judas Rising rules.

#17 — July 24, 2007 @ 00:10AM — Beatrice

Don't know you, and not sure I want to. But all that aside, you made a huge mistake pissing off the Rising fans. You may still have time to repent. Dino Bravo forever....!!!!

#18 — July 24, 2007 @ 00:51AM — Mark Saleski [URL]

ok, so, like...do alla youse guys have mullets or do you shave and polish like Halford?

scary.

#19 — July 24, 2007 @ 12:20PM — Chalkboard Girl

Judas Rising is so the real think chrissy boy!!
They rule and their fans are proof of that. They are truly the best!!

#20 — July 24, 2007 @ 12:24PM — Clydette

Duh, like we don't know what a cover band is. You obviously don't know great music when you hear it and they pay you to write reviews?!?!?!?I think you need to get your ears checked Chris because Judas Rising is fantastic and Dino Bravo is the best!!!! He is unbeatable and unstoppable.....

#21 — July 24, 2007 @ 12:29PM — Chris Beaumont [URL]

Cover bands by he definition will never be the best. Judas Rising is just not a terribly good one.

I can tell you that I would much rather listen to Judas Priest.

Clydette: it would appear that you do not know what a cover band is if you consider Judas Rising the best.

#22 — July 25, 2007 @ 14:02PM — Clydette

Judas Rising is awesome and they are exceptionally grrrrreat!!
I personally don't give a flying sh_t who you would rather listen too!
I know what a cover band is and the fact remains that Judas Rising is the best out there!! So get over it and admit to yourself that you love them too!!!

#23 — July 25, 2007 @ 14:08PM — Kate McCrea

Wow, that Clydette is my idol, you go girl, I totally agree with you. Judas Rising is really a great band and the singer, Dino Bravom his voice is incredible, I love the way he sings. Chris, you have got to admit, they really have an awesome and very strong fan base, I myself have become one of their biggest fans!! Keep up the great work Judas Rising....I will be sure to catch your next show.

#24 — July 25, 2007 @ 14:52PM — Chris Beaumont [URL]

Were all of you at this show? there were not all that many people there, and the crowd got smaller as the night went on.

The performance was not that good.

All of you would be better served listening to the real Judas Priest.

#25 — July 25, 2007 @ 15:05PM — Tony Manero

Chris, your quote "the performance was not that good" is strictly and opinion and NOT a good one at that. I don't normally write on these boards here, but I was at the show and I was very impressed with Judas Rising, so much so, that I really want to congratulate them on a job well done. They are not only musically and vocally talented, but they are full of energy and look like they really enjoy what they're doing. You have my vote Judas Rising....Rock on.....

#26 — July 25, 2007 @ 16:34PM — Daniel Holland

First, you left after 3 or 4 songs, ass-munch, so you are wrong about the crowd diminishing. It only grew larger. Rising is so generous to play a small club like the Chance for its fans. [Edited]

#27 — July 25, 2007 @ 20:51PM — Mark Saleski [URL]

wow, this is like read beavis and butthead live on the internet!

ass-munch...classic!

#28 — July 25, 2007 @ 22:25PM — Daniel Holland

Who the fuck's this old man?

#29 — July 26, 2007 @ 03:39AM — El Bicho [URL]

"Who the fuck's this old man?"

His name is Saleski. He's so old he likes jazz.

#30 — July 26, 2007 @ 04:00AM — Glen Boyd [URL]

I thought Dino Bravo was a wrestler in WWF in the eighties. Died over some deal running cigs across the border for the mafia...

#31 — July 26, 2007 @ 04:32AM — Christopher Rose [URL]

All I know is that the comments from Dino Bravo, Sidney, Tammy, Jenny, Pizer, Mr Holland, Alex Durant, Dr. Alex Durant, Dr Alex, Harry Booth, Commander Dack, Beatrice and Daniel Holland all came from the same IP address...

#32 — July 26, 2007 @ 04:54AM — Glen Boyd [URL]

Speaking of guys who like using a lot of names with the IP same address Chris...didja happen to see my boy Rubberneck/Mookie on the Demo debates the other night? Those two goofs from Kentucky--that was Mr. Neck himself (the younger one). Finally got his fifteen seconds.

#33 — July 26, 2007 @ 04:58AM — Christopher Rose [URL]

I must confess that I'm not following the dull as ditchwater presidential wannabe dance, seems to me like there's not much to choose between any of them, although wonks may demur.

#34 — July 26, 2007 @ 06:45AM — Chris Beaumont [URL]

Thanks Chris, I was beginning to suspect as much re: the IP addy.

#35 — July 26, 2007 @ 08:32AM — Hans Reinhardt

I couldn't agree with you more Daniel. If that ass-munch would have stayed, he would have seen how the crowd grew larger. I,unfortunatley, got there late, but I had a bunch of friends with me and we enjoyed the show tremendously. If you are reading this Judas Rising, you guys are really great and Dino Bravo, you are totally a master of your art, don't listen to that ass-munch, he wouldn't know talet if it hit him in his big fat head!

#36 — July 26, 2007 @ 14:55PM — Chris Beaumont [URL]

One last question for "all" of you: If they are so good and so great, why aren't they playing any original material? All they are doing is attempting to mimic a superior act.

#37 — July 27, 2007 @ 01:30AM — Daniel Holland

One question for you is why are you blind to sheer talent? So many fans agree. What is your problem with them? We'd like to know.

#38 — July 27, 2007 @ 06:55AM — Chris Beaumont [URL]

Well, first sheer mimicry may show that someone can play, but it is in original material where talent is shown. And musically I did not think they were that bad, and I said as much. No JP, but not bad. However I did not think the singer was a very good facismile of Halford. Sure he could hit high notes, but it was hitting notes not so much as singing the notes. Then there were the stage antics, slinking around like a parody of a gay man, not terribly Halford-esque. It took me out of the performance. Perhaps it was a bad night, but I was not all that impressed. THe people I was with agreed and since we already saw who we were there to see, we chose to exit while we were still happy.

I have nothing against cover/tribute acts, I have seen some very good ones, including Sanctuary, SATO, Back in Black, Queen of the Reich, and a Pink Floyd one whose name escapes me at the moment. The two JP ones I have seen were not all that impressive.

#39 — July 31, 2007 @ 15:36PM — Daniel Holland

And you became a vocal coach when?

#40 — July 31, 2007 @ 15:57PM — Chris Beaumont [URL]

Listening to music and recognizing a good voice has nothing to do with being a vocal coach. By the same logic you would not be able to say it is good either, as I doubt you are vocal coach.

That argument has no bearing.

#41 — July 31, 2007 @ 20:20PM — Daniel Holland

You are incorect on both accounts.

#42 — August 1, 2007 @ 16:34PM — Dr. Skywalker

Well, I am a vocal coach and believe it or not, I was there at the Chance and Dino Bravo has an incredible voice. His vocal range is fantastic as he hits the low notes and the hight notes with such ease, there is no strain in his voice as I find with many of my clients. He also has great pitch to his voice and overall he is one of the most talented singers out there. I believe Chris, you need to admit to yourself that Dino Bravo is a man of talent and his voice is golden. Jealousy is an evil thing Chris.
Keep up the great work Dino Bravo if you're reading this.

#43 — August 1, 2007 @ 20:11PM — Rockkid

Wow! A real professional vocal coach! I'm a singer, too, and my favorite singer is Rob Halford! I haven't seen Judas Rising, but I'd love some advice on how I can sing like Rob! Any advice? I can't hit all the high notes, how can i make my range higher?

Priest rocks!

#44 — August 2, 2007 @ 09:12AM — Clyde

Dude, Here's my advice to you:
You need to go see Judas Rising and see for yourself how the Master of Rock, the one, the only Dino Bravo hits all the high notes. You can learn a lot from Bravo the King of Rock!

#45 — August 2, 2007 @ 10:10AM — Vincent [URL]

Wow! I checked the Judas Rising website and looked at the videos from the chance on 7/7/07! Dino Bravo is the king! He is amazing. This chris guy is totally off. He's either jealous or deaf. Either way, Bravo rocks! It's like being at a Priest concert! Since the real preist doesn't tour much these days, Dino Bravo is the next best thing. Even better! Rock on Bravo!

#46 — August 28, 2007 @ 22:50PM — jugghead

Do people in cover bands really think they're good? As a singer/songwriter/guitarist in a successful band that plays all originals, all the time, I can tell we consider people who play in cover bands to be on a lower level altogether, no matter what their level of musicianship. Are we snobs? yeah. But we're not alone in having this attitude, and there's a good reason for it. Case in point: looks like there's a guy here posting under many aliases to defend his "honor" and build up his fragile little ego. That is truly funny. And sad. At the same time.

#47 — September 5, 2007 @ 13:46PM — Adrien

To answer your question, are you a snob? No, you're a dick! Another thing, if you had any computer knowledge, you would be able to see that no on is posting under different aliases, all the adresses are all different, there are ways to check that out. And lastly, I must say this Dino Bravo is the epitome of success as he still has everyone talking about him and that says it all. Dino Bravo rules you jughead! The only thing that is truly funny and sad at the same time is you and your stupid ass opinion!

#48 — September 5, 2007 @ 13:58PM — Christopher Rose [URL]

Since my late July update, this article has enjoyed comments by "Hans Reinhardt" and "Adrien" from the same IP address, so I must assume that it is the latter that is a bit of a dick, for all their splutter and rage.

#49 — September 17, 2007 @ 16:18PM — King of Rock

Who the fuck asked you to review that band? You did not get permission from the band you asshole!

#50 — September 17, 2007 @ 16:27PM — Chris Beaumont [URL]

That's funny. Who needs permission?

Thanks for stopping by.

#51 — September 21, 2007 @ 14:38PM — Sac-O-DiMed

Yo ho ho! Priest is back! Judas Rising in the house! You guys are like Gods! Floating on air, handsome , and graceful! I love you!

#52 — September 26, 2007 @ 15:36PM — Mark Saleski [URL]

wow...somebody forgot to change the batteries in the carbon monoxide detector on this thread.

#53 — September 26, 2007 @ 18:07PM — Chris Beaumont [URL]

LOL. Nice Mark!

#54 — November 29, 2007 @ 10:12AM — Lord Vader

What's up ya fags? Butt-buddies...fat loser slaves...The power is at the hour and laughing at you!!!!
