Movie Review: Ocean's 13

Despite the battering Ocean's 12 took from critics back in 2004, director Steven Soderbergh brings back the Ocean's gang for a third heist.

Reuben Tishkoff (Elliott Gould) decides to build a new hotel in partnership with renowned casino owner Willy Banks (Al Pacino) against best friend Danny Ocean’s (George Clooney) advice. Banks screws Reuben over and he suffers a heart attack. Danny reunites the gang to orchestrate a heist in which they will get revenge on Banks.

A third Ocean's film seems pretty pointless, but continuing sequels are a common trend these days. However Ocean's 13 is actually a very fun picture, the kind of movie you can go to the cinema and have a good time watching.

Nevertheless there are flaws, the main problem being the wildly dubious plot that at times is confusing. The film also crashes to an over-the-top and cheesy finale, which is a shame.

Steven Soderbergh is a great visual director and his panning shots of Las Vegas are simply stunning. The movie on a whole is very stylish and shot with flair. Neat camera angles and superb editing work make for a very pleasant viewing experience.

George Clooney and Brad Pitt ooze cool in these roles and therefore their characters are highly likable. In fact I could easily say that about nearly everyone in this film. I enjoyed the performances from Casey Affleck, Scott Caan, and Don Cheadle in particular. Matt Damon gets to have much more fun with his character this time round and he takes full advantage.

As for the legend that is Al Pacino — he is very solid here, never taking himself too seriously; he actually pokes fun at himself without ever going too far. I can’t help but wonder what might have been if he got to play a real menacing villain.

Hopefully this will be the last we see of the Ocean's gang; there is no need to take this series any further. For a fun night out at the cinema, Ocean's 13 is worth the gamble.
