Paul Potts - Opera's Very Own Cinderfella
Published June 20, 2007
The lore and legend of opera thrives on the fact that every once in a dozen blue moons a star can be born, rising from nowhere. There are stories about the prima donna who, in a fit of temperament refuses to sing, only to be replaced by the shy young understudy who rockets to stardom. I attended a performance of Simone Boccanegra at the Metropolitan Opera where the soprano, whose name I now forget, but of star quality, was ill, only to be replaced by Aprile Millo, who blew away the critics with her exquisite performance of Amelia. My mother still tells the story of the evening she finally made it to the Met to see her favorite Robert Merrill only to discover he was being replaced by a young baritone no one had heard of, Sherrill Milnes. Such a moment occurred a few weeks ago when a very shy, insecure Welsh tenor appeared out of nowhere and has set the opera world, and perhaps the pop music world on fire.
Paul Potts’ tale could become one of opera’s great Cinderella or Cinderfella stories. Only time will tell. Unlike other opera singers who are struggling for an audience, he comes complete with a ready made one, hanging on to his every note. People who have never heard a note of opera before are tuning in to listen to him. Sometimes dreams do come true. Sometimes dreams come true for people who truly deserve to have them come true.
I first heard about Paul Potts, the soulfully sad Welsh tenor last week, when the blog buzz was just getting started. When I first heard the 36 year old man with the basset hound eyes, the suit that cost thirty-five pounds, and his world-weary appearance, I was in tears. He nailed Puccini’s Nessun Dorma like a pro.
As you watch the critique of the tenor who still works at Carphone Warehouse, watch the look of disbelief on his face. You realize this is a man who is trying one last rash stunt, appearing on Britain’s Got Talent. If he lost, he was planning to quit and throw away the small fortune he spent on voice lessons. Instead, for once, fortune smiled on the man who is afraid to smile because he is so self-conscious of his very crooked teeth.

Suitable for a Sinister cabal of superior writers: Paul Potts Profiles Pataritida Pacharawirapong
Brilliant piece of writing and analysis....I was trying to find out about Paul and your blog was everything I needed - all in one place! Thanks!
I am not a fan of opera nor Britain, but after seeing a clip on Brit Hume's show on Fox, I watched Paul Pott's performance on YouTube. I, too, found myself in tears (not knowing why). You blog has nailed it. Pott's "world weary" face told a heart-breaking story and made his performance so uplifting. Thanks.
Paul Potts may become the next "Harry Potter" of the Opera World. His voice offers us a refreshing innocence to our ears! Tenors are extremely rare and Paul Potts is certainly one of the rarest----he sings without pretense or
entitlement!
My 17 yr old son and I watched the Paul Potts video...me in tears and my son with goosebumps. What a wonderful story and thanks for the update on his life and progress. We'll be waiting to buy our first opera CD as soon as it is ready!!! Thanks for the blog spot Cheers Doug Kerr

Wow! I played the tube video at least 10 times, Stirring. Moving. Emotional. Takes a lot to impress Simon, and impress Paul did. Can't wait for the album. BRAVO.
Paul Potts and Simon Cowell: Singing hyped emotion? H-umm?
As we reflect on Paul Potts, the newly discovered winner of "Britain's Got Talent" [ BGT ] and his beautiful voice, we naturally reflect on our own values and life accomplishments. What gifts has God given us? If we work hard, can the sun warmly shine on our faces? I cried and replayed videos several times to take in emotions of not only singer, but also judges, and audience. But my wonder had a gnawing knowing that did fit neatly into the 'underdog to top performer' story I heard in his storyline.
World wide delight and emotions from seeing Paul fully approved; perhaps after being de-valued for years, came as much for his humble slightly tousled persona in the show, and as much for his ardent operatic singing. But, a charade that falsely elicits my true emotions seems a scam, especially if greedy.
I heard the story on video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1k08yxu57NA - from the opening set-up, "... the world of show biz seems a million miles away. Its Paul, a mobile phone salesman from South Wales.". At 3.51 on the clip, Simon Cowell said, "I like shows where somebody isn't a professional, has talent, isn't aware of it, has a normal job, and then you see something else."
On the clip, Paul talked about his dream and how he had lacked confidence. Yes, we identify and all desire encouragement. He sang. Magic. But, as Simon said, "... then you see something else.", and like he said: I saw a former £8,000 prize [ about $16,000 U.S., now ] for Paul Potts from Michael Barrymore's TV talent show, and extended tutelage from operatic masters in Italy, four amateur opera productions, a concert with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and plans for a summer tour with them.
Obvious. Amateur talent needs training and experience. That is worthy. But my emotions are dialed into a guy who said his dream is to do what he feels he was born to do, and his feelings had always lacked confidence! Experience and prize money is confidence building. He had plenty since his birth and early identity. I saw a fellow who wore a humble jacket at the semi-finals, sans a tuxedo he knows well in opera, yet spiffed at the finals. But it is the voice! No. It is also the person's words, too.
It is implied that people did not previously value his talent: an unknown without promotions. On the British TV interview after Paul won BGT, he was clear, "You know, I've not taken up promotions before because people wanted me to change who I was, and I'm determined to be true to myself, because at the end of the day ....", http://www.myspace.com/paul_potts - June 17 video, set 1.30. They wanted his talent, and he chose not? Okay, he can negotiate! But, that seems strong-minded; and very confident! He refused pro-motions. We got e-motions: shy bullied kid; his best friend was his voice.
Paul went to New York to field NBC's basic questions: "... and I know that you haven't had formal training, so how did you learn to sing like this?". He ignored their wrong assumption and said, "Umm, I've just always sung - just always sung. My voice has always been my best friend.", June 21 video at 2.53; same site. As Simon said, "has talent, isn't aware of it ....". What worth to him are the masters who gave him lessons, on which he spent most of the £8,000 prize money? ... and singers with whom he traveled the stage on the Italian operatic circuit, and London's experiences? If humility means to be unassuming and common with other people, like its root 'humus', then earthy and unpretentious people do not cover their history of help from other people. Rather, Paul gives us wrong assumptions.
Critics comment that for operatic singers, Paul is okay; not extraordinary. I like his voice. It is good and memorable! But, what is extraordinary are the hyped emoted feelings. Some people might say, "that is how the show world sells!" No! Not here! Not with true emotions of people around the world, teary eyed for the underdog; not in this case of contestants' climbing the ranks on rungs of public votes: and the public paying to vote by telephone. Purity of spirit should remain pure, not a sham that brings a shame to hope and faith in Horatio Alger type humanity; at public expense. I enjoy world-class music, but not world-class charades and emoted stories for profit! What is the Paul and Simon story?
British Simon Cowell spent 2 years forming "Four Tenors" or "Il Divo", a popularized package of the operatic world, similar to the Three Singing Tenors. Producers package talent. He knows that world. He knows that both talent and emotion sell. Did he tweak our emotions through set-up stories to launch a Paul Potts' premier CD; with Simon producing more mogul money? I like true emotions, meaning full; not half-full false 'unknown underdog' 'discovered'. That half-full leaves me half-empty.
A contestant background video showed Paul in what appeared to be lush South Wales seaside, looking like a CD cover. If BGT showcases this 36 year old mature amateur singer, then perhaps the last drop of bloody money can be wrung from innocence. Not his innocence. Ours. Simon Cowell's announcement at the final show that Paul Potts would be recording an album the next week was lucid business-linkage to the world. But to link our common emotions for hope in challenges, and our faith in people and love of life: to a 'confident' 'hold-out promotion' person who did not disclose his full story, is miserly manipulation. A contestant who approaches their stage will be known: by producers: and in advance. They want to uncover upsetting persons, especially when the prize is the doorway to a further contract! They want lead-in pieces about a contestant's character and history! I want a good spirit that is fair to the closing of Nessun dorma!: Vincerò! Vincerò! Vincerò!, I shall win! I shall win! I shall win!
If we act fairly, work hard and have talent, then hopefully we are rewarded. But, an 'underdog' 'without confidence' is hyped and yanks at more money. His 'unknown' is really sans full disclosure.
If Paul Potts fairly wins a competition to get a contract, then great! The Paul Potts NBC interview ended with a transition piece, to NBC's next show segment. Its topic was ironically poignant: "Greed in America: why some people will do anything in search of easy money.". Emotion was hyped, then E-motioned by U-tube. We cried. Why? Good voice, and hyped! Perhaps disclosures of Paul and Simon were not as lyrically full as some New York city namesakes, but they might have much in common with another June 21 item from MSNBC: "Martha Stewart on grilled chicken done right" at http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19054369/ . Someone, turn up the heat to grill them about "disclosure", in this case! The sound of money echoes in my deeply emoted feelings, and charades are shallow sales.
Last week my 8 girlfriends and I met in Whistler,BC at the Limoges Inn to spent some time togehter and to celebrate our baby's 50th Birthday. Maggie introduced us to Paul Potts, none of us had heard anything about, and we listened to him on my Macbook...when we first saw him and Maggie proclaimed, isn't he cute, Janet's response was, no! Then we heard him sing and he brought me to tears. The clarity of his astonishing voice blew me away when he hit the high notes. I was an instant fan and my husband and I have been watching him daily on youtube since and cannot wait to get Paul Potts first CD.
Paul has an amazing talent. Someone said in a movie once that people either love Opera or hate it. Until I heard Paul Potts sing on Youtube I had never experienced the power of Opera music. I now have experienced it and I now proudly join others who love Opera music.
SSH has been pouring on every blog she or he can find in an effort to destroy this man's image. Talk about devious motives....
To set the record straight, this is Paul's story from an article you might enjoy reading the rest of. He never said he was an idiot, he said he was insecure and down on his luck. Perfect target for an abuser, I suppose. He also is not considered a "professional" where I come from, because he was never paid to perform. Taking lessons is usually standard for any amateur, so I don't see that as a problem, no matter who the teacher is.
"He joined Bath Opera and performed four roles as an amateur. He had singing lessons when he could afford it and spent all his savings - around £12,000, including £8,000 he won answering music questions on Michael Barrymore's My Kind Of Music - on opera singing courses in Italy. This has led to accusations that Paul is a "trained" performer, tutored by Pavarotti himself.
"Everyone in Britain's Got Talent had had some kind of training, including the kids. You don't just walk out on stage and produce something out of nowhere, Paul explains. "If I were a trained opera singer, I'd have three years in a conservatoire behind me - and I haven't. I spent three months studying in Italy in 2000 and six weeks in 2001 and I had to work 13-hour days for months to save enough money to go. I've never been paid for singing.
"I have sung for Pavarotti in Italy when he came to hold a master-class, but he would be the first to admit he's no teacher. He didn't give instructions or make suggestions or even pass comment. I sang an aria by Rodolfo from La Boheme and ran out of breath and Pavarotti said, 'Rodolfo wouldn't run out of breath - you'd better sing me something else'.
"I was the only one he asked to sing again so I took it as a great compliment. But again, he didn't say anything about my performance. Someone else who was watching him told me his body language indicated he'd liked it. But I had auditioned to be allowed to sing for him in the first place."
Potts is SHITE.
You feel goosebumps because it is DISGUSTING.
BGT just picked up a most strange one to be the winner.
I am so VERY tired of all the people that want to attack Paul Potts for his background, his talent which hasn't fully blossomed yet, and whether or not he should be considered an amateur. As Clark said so well "frankly my dear, I don't give a damn." The mans singing sends chills down my spine. His rendition of "Time To Say Goodbye" does something that Bocelli or Brightman NEVER did, it makes me cry. You're going to poo poo him and/or deny him the success his voice deserves? GET A LIFE, Paul just got his.
The Dude rocks!!!
Critics be damned. I'm a 30 year old from the USA, I've never cared for opera and never thought I would. I normally listen to genres of music that are infinitely different from opera: death metal, grindcore, hardcore... I found Paul's audition video on youtube and it only took him about 5 seconds to make me start crying. His singing is deeply moving, a beautiful experience. Picture me, a bearded, tattooed, heavy metal tough guy crying to opera... I'm an instant Paul Potts fan and now very interested in opera. The critics and naysayers can flap their lips, but don't underestimate Paul's ability to connect with people like me, people who would probably never have been interested in opera. I like Paul's singing for the same reason I like all the other music I listen to: a passion that isn't contrived and a power that is earth shattering.
Right now the world is full of singers, everyone tries to show his talent in different ways, maybe some of them dreess up with strange customs, hats, rings, piercing, trying to be different, but Paul Potts is a common man, with old shoes and very cheap clothes, but the diference between Paul and all the "talents" is that he is a common man with a extraordinary voice. Opera for me has always been music, music that it´s always set in the doctors office, in some schools, but never in the radio at the time of the news, or sports , Opera is music for higher moments, not for every day, but with this man you can realize that even a crowd can be in extasis, people that went to see a new pop singer, was finally in love we a fat man that was singing something in italian, they didn´t know what he was saying, but they love it. I really don´t like Opera , but the music that crisp my skin, is somethng that makes me stop and take a look, because Paul gives us the opportunity to discover that music has the power to make us believe in us, show us to the world, and realize that every man has something to show, even if you are not a good looking man. Thank you Paul, you make my day different today.

Dearest Paul Potts.
A great Congratulation from me Kurt and my wife Kirsten living in Copenhagen, Denmark. You brought us to tears, when we saw you and heard you sing Nessum Dorma in danish TV - fantastic. Also the TV-hosts were very touched, had tears in their eyes. The same with our neigbours and friends. You have really touched our hearts. Thank you, Paul. We hope for a happy future for you, your wife and family. We wait for your album. Let it be soon.
Love from

What a superb piece of writing, strong on both the subjective and the objective.
All the faith that has been put in Paul is steadily coming round to be rewarded. He is singing better and better, and his voice is showing more of its distinctive nature and high quality.
He is Paul Potts, and that looks like staying that way. No other tenor I can think of would have ended an interview with Richard and Judy in a flurry of giggles. Then, as he went off to sing, he turned, gave a teeny bow and thanked them. He has no idea how good he is; Richard and Judy should have been on their knees thanking him.
Just one tenor giggled a lot: Sir Harry Secombe, aka one of The Goons. Not the same class as Paul, but the same huge heart, and the same determination to be himself. And, of course, Sir Harry really was a Welshman.
Only kidding, only kidding!!! Paul holds a British passport, but he is a citizen of The World.
Paul not only has a winning, emotive voice, but a personality that puts people at ease. There are too many celebrities w/ minimal talent & an arrogant, self centered, entitled attitude. The media is flooded w/ their problems, stupid comments, extravagant expenditures. It's a relief to finally have someone held up to public view that's humble, practical - even frugal!,grateful, ethical and extraordinarily talented; in other words, someone deserving of fame & fortune, for a change! Let's have more "ordinary" folks in the news who appreciate a chance to share their gifts w/ the world.
Like so many before me, I have no knowlege of "opera", but Paul Potts has "addicted me" with his humble, honest, simplicity and powerful voice. I am looking forward to the DVD i just ordered! I must have listened to Britain has Talent 30 or 40 times since my friend forwarded it to my E-mail. Stay as wholesome and wonderful as you both are, Mr. and Mrs. Potts!!
I don't know anything about opera, the only tune I like is O' fortuna simply because the movies pump it so much when something great is about happen. Watching the guy floor the auditorium and bring them all to either tears or their feet......nothing but inspiring and motivating. I was in tears and can't wait to buy his album.
emotional....bravo.
new opra fan
Paul,
Just lovely, absolutely lovely. Sometimes music makes you literally stop and really touches your heart. I can't describe it really. I watched the you tube video 3 or 4 times a day because I just had to see you sing one more time and see the audience express their joy as you sang. I am now listening to your CD. And I knew I did not care for opera from prior experiences. Thank you for opening my ears and mind to this beautiful music sung by your beautiful voice.
Wishing you the very best (please keep singing and recording!!!),
AR in the U.S.
Tim is right on. The way Paul projects himself, the emotion, the feeling he is able to project into people from all walks of life isn't taught, it's God given.
Paul is a humble sensation, and as others have said; I keep listening to is U-Tube clips. I'll have the CD when it's out, and my love of music has always been country.
So from rednecks to bikers to steel workers, this man has our attention. True God given talent!
Paul, as with the members of our choir, The Australian Welsh Male Choir, you are an amateur singer who loves to sing and entertain people with your singing.
However, your voice is terrific and you have taken the sound of opera to many who would not have listened to it previously, but certainly you have turned the heads of equally as many 'opera lovers' with your performances.
Your "hwyl" is infectious and should you come to Melbourne, we would love to meet with you and maybe do a number or two with you.
Diolch yn fawr
Tengo 70 años de edad y he oido mucha música. Potts ha sido el único quer me ha hecho llorar. Gracias por eso!!!
I've been into everything from Ska to old school punk rock &never knew I'd love Opera they way that Paul has enabled me to do so. I agree with the writer above who described Paul Potts as having a face resigned to dissappointment, even when he smiles, his eyes convey great sadness & embarrassment. Shamefully, one of the judges even rolls his eyes when Paul walks onstage & introduces himself. And as far as his critics, Paul did not have formal training because he did not spend 4 years at a conservatory like Berklee School of Music (in Boston.) He was a working-class hapless schmuck struggling to support his singing habit thru expensive lessons. For the simple fact that he had never been paid to sing, means he was not a professional. The critics are simply wrong on this issue. Paul, you moved this former skinhead to tears. 50 years from now, you will be considered one of the all-time greatest singers who ever lived. Thank you for confronting your fear head-on & beating it back. Your story is going to be an inspiration for generations to come.
Paul Potts did have a very inspiring performance for the place and the time. Was it great on the strictly technical merits of the performance? No, but it really doesn't matter in that he did touch a number of people including myself. Pott's lack of experience and training is evident, but he does have a certain crystalline vocal quality and the certain 'ping' that is compelling in tenors. Hopefully given enough attention, he will mature into a superior finished product.
Paul,
It took 36 years for you to realize that God hasn't forgot about you. Wish you and family all the best for the rest of your life.
USA - Sweet Home Alabama -
Opera is not the music of choice in the deep south. But, appreciation of beauty, sincerity, hospitality and the underdog are - Enter Paul Potts . . . His YouTube videos began making the rounds (as well as Connie's) in June stirring up tears and interest in opera proper.(vs Grand Ole Opry!)
Paul Potts has an amazing gift and his life history and demeanor tug at our hearts and imaginations, opening a world weary generation plagued with wars & rumors of wars, the loss of innocence experienced with 9/11 to the beauty and sincerity of a voice which transports us to the sublime and away from what divides us as humankind to what brings us together and helps us communicate as one - the universal language of music. I didn't realize his CD was out, but will be buying my first opera album due to Paul Potts. Thank you, Paul.
*Hey, I can't deny I also enjoyed watching Simon's jaw drop when Paul opened his mouth and the "ugly duckling" turned into a beautiful swan right before the judges eyes. Paul was already a swan. When will we ever learn?
Why do we not accept an underdog can succeed. I want to believe there was nothing hidden here and if there was so be it. The voice is remarkable and brings me to tears each and every time I listen to him. He is my idol and let me believe that this is a dream come true for every underdog, I don't want to know what Simon did, I don't care. Here in person, is the person, a young man with the voice of an angel. Let it be. Please, we have so little beauty in the world of entertainment these days, this is pure beauty and talent.
Paul,
You will no doubt be too busy to read every comment posted here but it feels good to write out feelings you stirred in me. Ignore the ramblings of cynics posting here. People sacrificing most everything in pursuit of God-given passions deeply understand your path in life. While all cannot expect the same outcome, you serve as an inspiration to never give up. Inspiring others through your voice and deeds is your gift back to the world.
It irks me how some individuals only look for negativity and try to put down anything that is uplifting. Potts IS the underdog, just look at his face and you see failure written everywhere.
His performance in BGT was exceptional; We saw an insignificant-looking little man, with problems and debts up to his ears, who did what very few so-called artists dare to do: HE SIMPLY WALKED UP, GRABBED A MICROPHONE AND BEGAN TO SING. That's right, no cool clothes, gimmics, or flashy background dancers doing aerobics.
I honestly believe life sometimes places you on what I call "the perfect moment", where every little detail is perfect for you, all you have to do is grab it by the horns and give it all you got. That's what Potts did, and he won big! Good for him, I really wish him the best.
EVERYONE, and I mean EVERYONE of those who apply for these type shows have previous experience as amateurs. Even those little cookie cutter "little miss cutsies" whose mothers brainwash into going into showbusiness. Those little cutsies have extensive experience and training before going into those shows, trust me. Or, do you think they just woke up one day and suddenly decided to send in an application.
As for the critics and their "sour grapes" let them continue predicting doom and finding faults with everything. Even Pavarotti was plagued by these merchants of doom throughout his career and up to the day he died.
All good things are truly from God. This beautiful voice and talent was given to Paul and as he gives it to us by using this gift, he will only be blessed as we all will be and have been by listening to him sing like an angel.
Pay attention to this one, boys and girls. It is the story of the decade. Musically, it may very well be the story of this new century.
As for the critics? Mr. Potts will have the last laugh.
There are 789 videos about Paul Potts on YouTube which have more than 43 million total views.
YouTube comments are from nearly every nation on earth that has internet access, and there are tens of thousands of comments. Most of those comments refer to shivers, chills, goosebumps and tears while listening to Paul Potts.
Additionally, there are more than thirty thousand bloggers around the world who have offered commentary about his voice, as well as his story. Many of those comments include references to shivers, chills, goosebumps and tears...
As you know, Potts also has a concert tour coming up, including dozens of performances at opera houses and concert venues in the UK, Europe and Australia. Several of these performances are already sold out, six months in advance.
Currently, he is in New York beginning his North American "One Chance" promotional tour.
Last, but most certainly not least, there is something about his CD sales you should be aware of.

i just purchased my Paul Potts cd and am very patiently waiting for his second one to be released. I think he is fantsatic.
If there is one word that sums up Paul's appeal its humility.
To the pedantic critics who dispute his authencity as an amateur
I doubt that any of the other contestants on the show gave purely "virginal" performances, am sure they too had performed elsewhere and suffered setbacks.
Its Pauls humility and passion for his purpose in life that inspires me to be above all a better person.
I saw the sadness in Paul Potts' eyes when I viewed u-Tube and my heart was saddened. But when that voice opened up, the world heard instant talent and soon it would be rewarded. Thank God for shows like Britian's Got Talent and American Idol that enable the undiscovered talent to be discovered. Paul you are an amazing man and I wish you only good things in life because your humility has not gone unnoticed. God Bless you always and remember He is always with you and should always be thanked for the talent He has given you.
Your voice is so beautiful and uplifting. Like so many others, tears come to my eyes each time I listen to you. Your inner strength comes through each time you sing. I just received two copies of your first CD. I hope the second one comes soon.
My greatest hope is that you will perform in Chicago.
Thank you for sharing your voice to help us escape everyday problems and take us to a higher level.
I too never heard of this man until this morning on a local Los Angeles talk-radio station that said he was going to be interviewed. The host said his BGT audition clip had been viewed over 10 million times! huh? well, by golly I better check it out pronto..so I did and I, like so many others that have commented on this and many other sites, was moved to tears as I watched this raggamuffin man with the sad eyes and trhift store clothes. From the first notes that made the panel and the audience suddenly perk up in thier seats and become riveted in amazement and awe as Paul sang from his heart..he must of been feeling it too because his voice wavered just a littlle in the finish but by then it was too late..a star was born..a star that I hope burns for many years as he has made fans of so many for who opera was a foreign word..no more! Brave Paul! You got a gift and please never change!
I am an Indian and i did not like western music much save a few rock and pop numbers ......i used to find opera music screechy and funny ....but i listened to Paul Potts on u tube just on a whim and not knowing what was the background story ....and the voice and the pain in the voice gave me goosebumps...i was in tears at the end of the rendition ...i then looked up in Google for more stuff on Paul ....
i don't know if it was good singing or bad singing as i am not a music person but i know he completely shook me with his voice and music ....
i love Paul Potts
I have seen the video at least 20 times and still get the feeling of seeing it for the first time each and every time I watch it. I catch myself humming it on occasion. The plans to buy the CD are in the works. The rags to riches has never fit a more humble fellow than Paul Potts and I hope that he is true to his words that fame will not get the best of him. I dont think that it will be the fame that changes him but those who promote him that will try his ability to stay grounded.
I had a friend send the link to me, not knowing what to expect. Being white male from America and predominantly interested in sports and rock & roll, I found myself in tears each of the 10 times I viewed the audition, and, forwarding it to co-workers and watching with them as well. From the beginning, when he announced he would be singing opera, to the very end, I was completely moved by whole experience, and, can't wait for the opportunity to witness Paul Potts performing in person. I hope a US tour happens soon, and, in a venue near me so that I can see and hear this wonderful performer. Awesome!!!
Mr. Potts,
I love the world of opera because the music reaches into my soul. You did this as well sir. The performance was as impressive and equally uplifting as any I have seen for the reason that yours is the beginning of a dream come true.
My hope for you Paul is that you truly remember your humble beginnings and bless the world of opera with what the Lord has blessed you with...your voice and the passion to sing! Let it be heard passionately and let your voice be strong for many years to come.
The years of criticism you have endeavored to leave behind you, should strengthen your resolve when it comes knocking now. While it is always difficult to hear the criticism, as it often comes in the form of negative banter; (Sometimes it might be insightful and worthy of building when done well) you need only review your market to know your bastions of friends and fans.
I wish you well with great fortune for your future and a personal walk that fulfills your passions for opera on higher levels. Extremely well done my friend...impressive and inspiring!
Paul Lang
I just saw this video, and like so many around the world, I was deeply moved by Mr. Potts' sad, suffering eyes juxtaposed against his incredible and previously unappreciated talent. What a tremendous gift from God he's been given, and it's my sincere hope that Paul Potts will use it for God's glory and to bring joy to millions (himself included). Great story!
I have watched and listened and loved what you have done. Your voice and the operas you chose make my heart sing. A feeling of great pleasure & success radiates to you and your new life from me.
Excellent article all around. I only became aware of Paul Potts 3 days ago as the result of a YouTube link that was emailed to me.
I have enjoyed opera since I was 19 (I'm late 50s now) and I too have been moved by many performances in the past. I loved Pavarotti.
However, when I listened to Paul Pott's performance at his audition, I felt like my emotional barriers had been destroyed by the power of a roaring locomotive. It took him less than 10 seconds to reach within me and bring me to tears and put a lump in my throat. Even Pavarotti did not affect me that powerfully.
I pay no attention to the opera snobs who, no doubt, will be throwing their spears at him because they didn't "discover" him.
What I find equally exciting is that Paul Potts has generated a flurry of interest in opera, from people who have never even heard opera sung or experienced the spectrum of feeling and emotion that it has to offer. As of late September, his U.S. CD sales show that he is #1 in Classical, #1 in opera and, most astounding of all, #4 in rock. That's nearly impossible to believe that anyone singing opera selections could possibly achieve such a ranking in the Rock category, and yet he's done it.
His heart comes across in his performances and it touches the hearts of his listeners. I *will* have his CD as soon as it arrives (stores that I called were sold out) in the mail.
I think opera may have found its Elvis Presley. Men and women will continue to write the music but only God can create such a voice.
I received Paul's album this morning. Went and bought four more to give as Christmas gifts. His rendition of Amapola will absolutely rip your heart out. That heartfelt voice comes across as not just beautiful singing; he's really making love to his audience and I think that's got a lot to do with his appeal....especially with my wife. :) From now on, I'm going to refer to Paul as the "Cardiac Caruso", meant with the greatest respect and admiration of course.
This bird is out of its cage and that's why the passion to be free comes through Paul Potts' voice. The comment above about a locomotive bursting through the barriers to those deepest feelings, causing tears, goose bumps and a yearning of our own to fly, to fly on the waves of pure joy in Paul's voice. Thank God for his freedom and joy in using his magnificent tenor voice.I have two of his cds, one to use until it wears out, then I'll have the second to fall back on.
Someone PLEASE help me get this to HER MAJESTY QUEEN ELIZABETH II and Paul Potts, for which you will have my Sincerest Thank-x

Dear PAUL POTTS,
My name is James A. "JIM" Brandes; it's not likely you'd know me; which will be my ETERNAL LOSS.
Just this evening I returned home from the doctor with news my days are potentially numbered now into hours and minutes; but I received an E-mail with a small clip of your first performance on: "Britain's Got Talent" under the heading:
"PHONE SALESMAN AMAZES CROWD - VIDEO"
I can't even begin to tell you how you gave me the GIFT OF A LIFETIME!
In the human; I feel where I'm told I'll go next could hardly contain a greater sound! Once I send this, I will search the Internet to see if there's a CD of you singing and if possible, obtain it at once!
MAY GOD RICHLY BLESS HER MAJESTY, YOU and BRITAIN; a land I've held in my heart for years; as a Poet who has many works written for THE ROYALTY of ENGLAND.

GOD; I heard YOUR VOICE today
And there can NEVER be the proper words for me to write or say
That can express what transpired within my HEART & SOUL
From hearing an obviously humble phone salesman; who isn't very old
Sing with more emotion and LOVE; in less than two minutes; to "WE"
Who though we might search throughout the earth or even ETERNITY
Are likely to find another like this VOICE
SOUNDS OF GOD'S AWESOME REALITY
PAUL'S, a DIAMOND beyond even coal transformed into this lowly gem
Like "THE CROWN JEWEL" QUEEN ELIZABETH II
WHOM GOD HIMSELF; into this world BOTH of YOU did send
So HIS WILL can be known and seen beyond my earthly pen
For you BOTH are a SONG which knows NO END
For soon the WORLDS about to UNDERSTAND and SEE
Things FAR GREATER than any HE'S allowed SCRIBED by me
And while my days left to write are extremely limited now
I feel deeply within my HEART I must SCRIBE somehow
What tonight GOD has placed upon my HEART & SOUL
Which; could well be the last time for the entire world to remain whole
I am reminded of the first, QUEEN ELIZABETH
WHO bowed; so the world might SEE
Doing so; to the sound of Handles Messiah; showing even SHE
Gives HONOR to the ONE TRUE MAJESTY
And GOD has allowed my feeble eyes for years, to behold and SEE
A depth and LOVE; QUEEN ELIZABETH II holds; knowing HER KINGDOM to be
The final MONARCH; when all time passes into
E - T - E - R - N - I - T - Y
Because both You and SHE
Recognize, accept and refuse to be
Less than GOD called each to be
Between now and HIS return which; soon our world will SEE
For in Dreams, Visions and Direct Voice GOD'S given me
As HE has with others, a kind of voice of Prophecy
As well as my friend HAYDN of your homeland
GOD'S guided him also to give a hand
That first; ENGLAND receive within THE ROYAL MONARCHY
The fading GIFT GOD'S given me
Along with the RISING GIFT HE'S given you
For the WORLD to SEE
I hear HIS WORDS of " PEACE BE STILL"
Not just in Song, Pen or Quill
But from your very first words to all mankind
As in humble defense Paul; you spoke of "WE" who are of a Different Mind
Who though often Scorned in Youth
Held strong to all "WE" knew to be "THEE TRUTH"
NOT just "The Truth" known by Simple Men
But that which from "THEE OH MASTER" on US descends
GOD it's TRUE, I heard YOUR VOICE today
And there can NEVER be the proper words for me to write or say
That can express what transpired within my HEART & SOUL
From hearing this obviously humble Paul Potts;
who makes me feel completed and whole
Ready to go to my ETERNAL REWARD for my SOUL
Sorry, here's my corrected copy. I was so excited I didn't properly proof read my work. I remain AWE STRUCK with PAUL'S VOICE, which I like to thini of as:
"GOD'S VOICE"
GOD I heard YOUR VOICE today
And there can NEVER be the proper words for me to write or say

Gives HONOR to the ONE TRUE MAJESTY
Thus, to this very day since; the Entire World
In HONOR of HER FAITH in CHRIST; we like SHE
Stand when "THEE HalleluYAH CHOIRS" is sung
Acknowledging "THEE KING of KING'S" is "HE"
And GOD has allowed my feeble eyes for years, to behold and SEE

In HONOR of PAUL POTTS
GOD; I can hardly wait to SEE; what YOU will allow GARY & ME
Once my life here on earth is over, will I be granted; to this LOVE of mine SEE
I'm so inspired by hearing a new singer; at least he is to me
Paul Potts, will live FOREVER in my memory
I just pray GOD'S ALLOWED, GARY to look down from above
And SEE my TEARS of JOY for you my LOVE
I can't tell the world what it does for me
To see this humble singer, bow before the Entire World to SEE
GOD has given Paul the strength to stand
But once he opens his mouth and sings, it's as if he's in another land
FREE of all the sorrows of his past
Transported to a land of LOVE now in ETERNITY'S GRASP
So, I must believe GARY, you're hearing PAUL; better than me
And know more about all this, than we on earth can see
I love the humility PAUL brings "UP" in each judge
Finally; to the point the audience screams alone, can't allow them on their decision to fudge
I'd even risk saying; after all was finished and done
The two men at least; looked back and wondered what they'd done
You SEE it was all ONLY within GOD'S COMMAND
PAUL, it is HE ALONE; WHO guided your Entire Life as "HE" tightly clasped your hand
For as you so "Accurately" stated: "My DREAM is to spend my life doing what I was born to do!"
You were "CORRECT" and GOD has all your life know this was TRUE
I'm just so BLESSED; as now are all of "WE"
That GOD granted me life long enough to hear you and SEE; the look of "TRUE HUMILITY"
I did order the two CD'S of which; I became aware
And I can hardly wait for them to arrive; so I can share
The LOVE, FAITH and JOY, you've given to me
Praying really soon, HER ROYAL MAJESTY meets you so SHE too can HEAR and SEE
The AWESOME POWER of GOD'S DIVINE HAND
Which; GOD has entrusted in this marvelous man
I will just PRAY PAUL you NEVER forget your past
And one day you acknowledge; it was GOD; WHO granted you this GIFT so VAST
That this was just the beginning of TRULY even GREATER THINGS
Which; GOD plans for our Sickened World to hear PAUL POTTS sing
Which; can elevate mankind back to THEE THRONE of GRACE
Restoring confidence; not only in PAUL POTTS; but to many who reside in disgrace
Whose lives like PAUL'S; are almost at the brink of despair
Because so few are left in today's world, who TRULY CARE
"YES", this was a day of "JUBILEE"; at least it was my friends for me
As one who's about to enter ETERNITY
GOD; I can hardly wait to SEE
What more YOU will allow GARY & ME
Once my life here on earth is over and done
But I know Paul Potts; will live FOREVER in my memory
Dear Paul:
Thank you! You make everyone believe in the passion of your dreams and along with your ethereal voice I have experienced a spiritual revival. I will be at your first live performance in Greater Washington, DC.
Bravo my friend, do not let the jealous touch you. Fran Counihan
I am not afriad to say that I cried the first time I watched the Paul Potts audition video. I don't know what it was that moved me so much, but it has clearly had the same impact on people around the world as well!!
Dave
And he will now be appearing on Oprah on Nov 6th! Look out for it!
Paul Potts,
Your exactly what Opera is all about. I never even heard your story before watching a YouTube video. You captured my soul and hung it up, twisted and turned and I was reduced to tears.. Well Buddy, I hate Opera!!. Tell that to those who try to slander you. Who cares you have sung before?. They are Jealous.. So hold up your head and remember that They are all fighting to be the next Pavarotti. Enjoy yourself..
God Speed.
Paul you are the greatest entertainer to come out of the U.K. since the Beatles.
Paul M.
Paul Potts sings Nessun Dorma(recorded) on Oprah Winfrey's "you Tube" show tomorrow (11-06-07).
Since having been alerted to Paul's story I have been inexplicably mesmerized. Cannot help but follow-up on any article or video about Mr. Potts. A strange attractor, indeed.
After much time spent studying it, I believe he is equal to, and in future possibly a cut above, Andreas Bocelli. I don't believe either can read music (could be wrong). The gold standard is still Pavarotti!
Wishing Paul Potts continued growth and success. He certainly deserves it. Paul is a very refreshing departure from the usual narcissistic self-aggrandizing celebrities!
Paul finished his audition singing "Vincero, Vincero, Vincero! He was correct.
i have never bought an opera cd in my life. I'm buying Paul Pott's
Paul embodies the everyman... yeah he may not be technically the best opera singer ever. music is about connecting with people and Paul connects in spades.
Paul Potts is a phenomenon because, Paul Potts is one of us. When we vote for Paul we vote for ourselves.
thanks Paul. Bravo and I wish you all the success in the world.
what are you here for today Paul?
I LOVE PAUL POTTS !!!! I PLAY HIS CD OVER AND OVER AND CAN'T WAIT FOR MORE ---WAY TO GO PAUL
THE LINK TO THE SHOW IN THE UK WAS SENT TOME. I WAS RAISED LISTENING TO OPERA FROM INFANCY. EVERYTIME I LISTEN TO HIM IT BRINGS ME TO TEARS OF JOY. I HOPE HE WILL BE COMING TO HOUSTON, TX FOR A CONCERT I WILL BE FIRST IN LINE. PLEAE CONTINUE IN YOUR DREAM BECAUSE THE ONES OF US WHO DIDNT MAKE I DREAMS CAN LIVE THRU YOU. YOUR WIFE IS A WONDERFUL WOMAN TO HELP Y0U AND IS SO VERY LUCKY.
Heart and Soul come to mind when I See and Hear this man perform. He is Truly Amazing and Uplifting and brings tears to your eyes. Critics can say all they want, but they can't touch the Gift this man has and how He has Touched Millions of people around the world, many of whom will tell you they Never liked Opera before.
Keep Singing Mr. Potts, the World Loves It!
Class does not come from money or success.
Class comes from behavior and a good spirit.
PAUL POTTS HAS CLASS.
Money, fame and success will follow him all the days of his life.
GOD has raised Paul Potts up for such a times as this...to teach snots from Hollywood that "pride comes before a fall". OUCH.
Be blessed Paul Potts - May you join us in Heavenly ranks to sing your high praises to the GOD of Abraham/Isaac and Jacob.
paul potts is an evolved soul, he has a talent so rare, but so humble, gentle, which is rare in the world, never hardly seen in showbiz. people not as evolved, will of course find fault, some people just cannot see th good in anyone or thing, avoid these type of people.
Kudos to Tim. Thanks for your comments. As for SSH and O and any other critics--well I guess there always needs to be opposition in all things.
I was sent the YOUTUBE video last June through an e-mail through a friend of mine of Paul's appearance on the show. I have to admit I was afraid for him when I saw him standing on stage about to sing "opera"--I was afraid he would embarrass himself terribly. Well, I was in for the shock of my life when he opened his mouth and let his voice be heard. I found myself, as so many others have, so emotionally caught up in the passion of his voice that tears welled up in my eyes and I cried. I was an instant Paul Potts fan! And I am one that doesn't like opera at all! But I will now enjoy opera through his CDs. Today my husband and I bought his first CD. (Definitely in this case, the phrase "Don't judge a book by it's cover" applies.)
It is also so nice to hear of someone from humble beginnings, who was made fun of growing up, and who lacked self-confidence, come out and share such great talent. I was made fun of alot growing up, I was shy and lacked self-confidence also. I could relate to Paul. But now his time has come to show his God-given talent. I wonder where all those who made fun of Paul are? What would they say now?
Bravo and hurrah to Paul (and his tremendously supportive wife)! May you continue to remain humble and share with the world the great talent you have been given.
Paul Potts is NOT WELSH - he is BRISTOLIAN, and last time I looked, Bristol was still part of England!
paul potts voice like no other soothees the soul, play it when you need an uplift. It is ver rare, and its about time we had some good living people in this business of celebrities/ Paul was a virgin until he met his wife, janice on Tv bosted she has had iooo lovers, God help you.
looks like lucy needs to learn some grammer and how to spell.
If you are going to call someone out for not being smart, you should probably get all the words right in your own post (The word is "grammar"), and learn how the "publish" button works. Otherwise, you come off looking like an absolute moron.
Thanks, El Bicho. I couldn't agree more. But I don't think the person was calling them out for not being smart--just pointing things out. I saw a few mistakes in lucy's. Oh well, we all make mistakes.
"I don't think the person was calling them out for not being smart"
What? When someone writes, "lucy needs to learn some grammer and how to spell," that is certainly the implication.
PAUL POTTS VOICE IS MESMERISING, THAT IS WHY PEOPLE CAN PLAY IT TIME AFTER TIME. KATHERINE JENKINS AND RHYDIANS VOICES ARE ONE TONE, ONCE IS ENOUGH. THE MAN IS SO LIKABLE, HE LOOKS SO TIRED THOUGH, GET MORE SLEEP PAUL.
Tesco seem to be pushing Andrea Bocelli cd. Is the big advertizing linked to Paul Potts giving their suits a bad name, Katherine Jenkins CD has been flogged alot on the channels. Katherines voice does not change tone much, no way is she listenable to like Paul Potts.
Paul Potts is simply remarkable. He is far too talented to waste time doing anything else apart from singing. His voice gives me the shivers and brings tears to my eyes. I wish him all the success he richly deserves.
He is a good singer, no doubt. But have any of you wondered why he was never discovered before now? He had been singing in amateur dramatic operas quite a few times? With such a God given talent how could he be passed over. Answer is that he is an opera singer of the class of Russell Watson. The same happened Watson, rags to riches story and everybody loved it. But are you telling me that Russell Watson is class A opera singer? Of course he isnt. But Potts is? Of course he isnt and best of all, Paul Potts knows that he isnt. I am really really happy for such a nice guy to catch a break in life. But people like you who are even mentioning him in the same light as one of the greatest opera singers of all time in Pavarotti......SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES. IT IS A DISGRACE TO EVEN SUGGEST THAT HE SOUNDS ANYTHING NEAR TO PAVAROTTI? DO YOU THINK THEREFORE THAT PAUL POTTS IS ONE OF THE GREATEST OPERA SINGERS OF ALL TIME? IF NOT THEN YOUT ANALOGY FALLS FLAT.
Isnt it funny how people on here, who openly admit not knowing the slightest thing about opera, simply slander Potts critics as jealous? That is such a typically ignorant reaction, normally the preserves of school children. No people are genuinely annoyed that great Opera singers like Pavarotti, Corelli etc etc are being compared to this guy. That is a damn right joke ( I would use stronger words if I could). Pavarotti got booed at la scala years ago, that wasnt jealousy. It was because he was below par that night. People who understand what opera singing is all about, the technique, tone, pitch etc......understand that Paul potts is not a top opera singer. NO ONE WOULD HAVE A PROBLEM WITH PAUL POTTS IF SILLY COMMENTS LIKE THAT COMING FROM THE WRITER OF THIS BLOG WERE NOT MADE.
When you think of all the mediocre talent that makes so much money in the Unitied States and around the world, you have to feel great about seeing an ordinary man (with no pretenses) that has one of the greatest voices around. The operas this man sings are not easy under any circumstances. We should all be happy that we have a replacement for Luciano which by all accounts was a great loss. Congratulations to Paul Potts, you epitomize what talent is and where it should come from, the heart. I salute a man that has obviously been through a lot of hardships and can still sing like an angel.
ERnie. I am sorry about your comment about Paul, I do not like to listen to Pavarotti, more than once, Bocelli never, and Bocellie gets a good deal of promotion on the ads. Pauls voice has a mesmerizing effect on the soul, which I have not come accross in opera before, Rusell Watson shouts. Pavorotti had the best training in the world, Paul is the opera peoples choice, the character, everything about him is lovable. The opera critics who say he would not get through the door of La Scala, they would be queuing up from around the world to see Paul Potts. One opera critic said, sales of opera tickets going up in the last months is nothing to do with Paul Potts, WRONG, it is everything to do woith Paul Potts.
PAUL POTTS AN INTERESTING LETTER IN SOUTH WALES ECHO PUT PAUL POTTS ON A PEDESTAL HE WILL CHANGE THE WORLD SHOULD BE PUT ON ALL HIS WEBS WE NEED GOOD ROLE MODELS NOT THE BAD ONES MAGAZINE GLORIFY ALL TOO OFTEN
I went into HMV to buy Paul Potts CD and it was hidden behind Pavarotti. I went into Woolworths and I found Bocelli CD covering up Paul Potts CD. Coincidence I suppose! but those awful opera critics are out to get him. The opera houses would be full the world over, if Paul Potts was there, when will they accept, opera is not just about shouting and mechanism. Paul Potts voice sticks in your head, your heart and soul. Opera critics I wish would get lost.
Paul Potts
I first heard your incredible voice and saw the show 'Britain's Got Talent' on U-Tube when I was working in Switzerland, cannot remember what I was looking up, something to do with Simon Cowel (sp) and we all have dreams and wishes which I hope do come true for those who deserve them especially at this time.
My wish is that you come to Zimbabwe to give hope to all who live there - those who choose to even though it may be a struggle at times, but, especially to those who have nowhere else to go in their struggle to survive.
It is an incredible country and difficult to describe just how beautiful, not only the landscape, but the people too - black and white - one way I can maybe do it is equate it with your voice.
I wish you and your wife everything you have been working and waiting for as you deserve it and hope you will always be the Paul Potts I first saw in your audition.
x
Paul Potts should write a book. It would sell millions, also a fim, not a documentary. Great singer, great man, exciting story the world is waiting to hear.
SSh, please be SSh, person like you in every office, school, church, street, less of your kind, more of Paul Pott characters and talent.
My impression of opera singers, up until Paul Potts came along, is a world of self centered prima donnas looking down on the rest of us uncultured types ala Leona Helmsley and the little people.
Paul's eyes say it all. A common man with uncommon talent. Critics be damned, this guy is good. For the first time in my 52 years I will be buying opera music, sung by Paul Potts. I can't explain why he has the effect that he does, but it is genuine.
Should the opportunity come along to bear witness to his talents, I'm there!
I watched Pavarotti documentary. Do you know he only did one show a month usually, because it was not good for the voice, Also, he took some substance to help his voice. Bocelli, does not talk the day of a show, and he only does one opera a year, and less concerts anually, than Paul does in months. Is Paul doing too much at once, he needs to cut down, he could harm his voice. Pavarotti and Bocelli have trained for years, with the best teachers. The raw talent of Paul Potts is phenonamal, he has a calming affect with his voice, which I cannot perceive with the other greats. Keep going Paul, but look after yourself better.
I was in Australia when The talent show was on, so it was later I caught up with Paul Potts and i became hooked. Pauls CD haunts me, the warmth of his voice and wonderful character spills out into your heart. I am just tired of people like Posh whose face graces every magazine going, she like many others has no talent to talk of, walks about posing, and with three children, does not dress appropriately,. If PaulPotts was held up as a exceptional role model for society, the world would change for the better.
The Paul Potts story touches us so deeply, not because of his talent--but because of his story. Paul's story is our story: The struggle, the doubt, the "one more swing" in the face of seemingly impossible odds...if the YouTube made us cry; the movie will have us weeping with joy that we are not yet beaten, and setting our jaws in determination to go on. The world needs Paul Potts, but the world would do just fine without another opera singer. Paul's success in music is but a springboard for a far larger calling...at least that's how it looks from the banks of Troublesome Creek.

Paul tells a story with his eyes, and we connect...soul to soul. We've all had failures, and disappointments, but Paul has the opportunity to break free. We cheer him on. He is us, we are him, he sings our song.
A few days ago, Celebrity predictions was on /TV. There was Britney,Bog Brother contestants, Posh and Becks,Amy Whinehouse, Pete Docherty, Kate Moss, Paris Hilton. It looks like to be an icon, you have to have little talent, do drugs, get drunk, go to prison, or have just to go on a reality show sitting about or insulting people, please someone bring on Paul Potts, talented, decent and humble.
I went on Paul Potts other webs, and I noticed SSh, has gone attacking him. SSh, what is your problem, did no one discover you in two minutes. Paul is not a trained opera singer, Pavarotti is,since a child. This mans voice is strong, yet calming, in the east, he is being used on Tv for meditation. Paul is a beautiful man, you are hateful.
I'm of welsh background and had a father who could sing the birds from the trees. I came to believe for every 1 well known trained singer there are ten natural unknown singers undiscovered. Congratulations to Paul Potts for being found you truely move the people you sing to, thank you
Yes it is obvious SSH had an agenda If you dislike something, you comment and let it go. He went around to all sites he could find posting the same thing. Using suppositions and half truths he tried to run down PP and his story. But remember that was back in June.
Now ,after all this time, we know Paul Potts . His honesty and integrity stands out.
After being a big star #1 in 13 countries 2 million and growing album sales , almost sold out concert tours. And still the same humble man, with the voice that CONNECTS with his audience.
I think what people forget is that opera performers are not just voices... they are all rounders much like ballet dancers..
to be the best you have to study hard in acting, language, movement as well as vocal production.. It takes years for a singer to step up to the level of the international stage.
Now Paul has a great raw talent.. A fantastic and unique raw vocal technique and an emotional entourage of expression to match. Yet he is not an opera performer yet..
Firstly He does not have the language skills in italian to make the beautiful sounds that even spoken italian posesses, he has not shown any signs of being able to perform full operatic doing full operatic roles at international houses.. And his raw vocal talent has many flaws.. wonderful as it may be percieved by many (particularily from the english speaking world,) and these flaws will undoubtable limit his career by bringing on vocal trauma if not addressed..
Whether a person likes anothers voice is all based on the individual, and his successes should not be taken away from him or slandered.. yet all has really achieved is the winning of a competition (big or small does not matter,) and hence the attention of the larger media and public.
I think it is highly unfair for people to classify him so greatly untill he has proven that he has the discipline and patience to improve himself and make opera his career.
As I am a young student of opera, also a tenor, I feel I have a level of understanding that exceeds those mindless fans who would follow whatever trend is currently popular..
** Opera is a profession and not based on talent. As with a doctor, pilot or carpenter it takes years to hone your skills to a level where you can sit amongst the greats of old.. So show a little more respect to those who work hard at their craft. **
I sign off lastly to say.. I am not jealous of Potts or his successes, and I hope to meet him professionally one day on the grand opera platform, but I do hate those small minded people who talk about things they don't understand and condemn those that have critiqued and studied for their whole lives in the classical music scene. Im sure you would not like an opera singer commenting on your place of work and telling you that pure talent is enough to get by in your profession..
Thomas Wood (Australia)
Thomas Wood, I know opera singers have to train for years, Pavarotti had a opera singing father, and trained from a child. Paul Potts training is minimul, but he has a voice that you can listen to for hours, and opera singers can after a while be too much. Paul Potts, has a magical quality that seems to connect up with the soul, not found in Pavarotti, all though I find it in Carearous. Pauls voice will improve if he gets the best training, but now, his tenor range is outstanding and his voice gives thousands pleasure. They say music is the launguage of the Gods, well Paul has got a God given gift, which I find hard to beat.
Thomas Wood, You are right, Paul has not trained like a professional opera singer. But he is bringing people to the opera arena. A Seattle Opera blog mentioned a woman who attended her 1st ever opera because she heard Paul's audition video.
You might be interested in the article there. They have a very reputable company. And the blogger understands that people do not recognize the difference in operatic and non-operatic voices yet.
Thanks for the comments.. will check out the article.. from your comment su, all I can see is that you are reiterating my point.. He is yet only a glorified popopera singer, and does not have the standard to be referred to as operatic..
a doctor is not a surgeon till he proves himself capable, no matter how intelligent or capable.
I truly hope that people such a potts are the tool to transfer the public back to a classical interest, since all the music we have come to know in our century has originated from years of genius peeling away the endless layers of musics possiblities.
Thomas Wood,
Just another point about Paul, who so many people enjoy.
I think Paul, at this stage in his life, is happy to be singing for a living; it was his life's dream.
He has provided a gateway to those who never considered listening to opera. Now many people are investigating the classics. And he's reminded those classical music fans to get out and buy tickets and drink in the glorious music. I've listened to more classical music in the last 6 months than in the last 10 years: CDs, DVDs, concerts & operas pending...
What more could he do?
You should see the discussions this has generated!
And if the trend continues, more people, both listeners and performers will be moving in that direction. How can this be anything but beneficial for all of us?
The only detriment is to compare. And I believe this is where people get contentious. Many pop singers have been thoroughly enjoyable in the past: Bing Crosby, Andy Williams, Perry Como, etc.(going way back) filled our world with good music, too. Nobody compared Bing Crosby with Mario Lanza! There was no need. Why compare Paul with Pavarotti? Paul loves opera, but he doesn't call himself an 'opera singer.' He said he wanted to sing the music he loves. He's doing that.
So I hope both the opera, jazz, pop singers can share the spotlight. We need a variety of good music, but we can't expect everyone to agree on their favorites.
We can all learn to investigate and appreciate different genres of music.
C.L. I wish opera fans would stop telling us who to listen to. I have been a classical music fan for years, and Pavarotti has not got the voice to listen to for any length of time, I was very disappointed with the Three Tenors concert. I am going yo Harrogate to see Paul next week, and if he sings his best,it will be the greatest show I have watched, and yes I have been to many operas. I watched Phantom of the Opera film, on sunday, Pauls voice outshone all of the professional opera singers in that film, he has got that crystal effect with his voice, velvet whatever you call it, he does for me since Mario Lanza like no other. Mario Lanza did not do many operas either.
just to clarify you fool...
phantom of the opera is musical theatre not opera. and never compare the b grade music of lloyd webber to opera's that have stood the test
Thomas Wood,
I agree, Andrew Lloyd Weber writes pop musicals, but I wouldn't say they are grade b; they are very entertaining, light fare. Most people today have trouble sitting through an entire opera, I believe. Our listening skills are like our eating skills: fast food and fast music, just the summaries, please.
And so a concert with an aria or two is satisfactory. What a shame! I'm no expert, but I've been listening to Elijah for about a month now (well to work and back...slow learner), and love it more with each listening. And I still have barely begun to scratch the surface. I think of opera as gold to be mined. It takes some time, but the treasures will be found there, and this is the music that will endure for centuries. A friend suggested listening to Elijah, a baritone friend who sang it. I don't understand why people are so upset at suggestions about listening to things that they might enjoy if they took the time. And I can't take people seriously who see no beauty in Pavarotti's voice. He was Paul's idol.

Thomas Wood, apart from being rude, let people have an opinion besides yours. I watched Paul Potts in concert at the start, I am going to watch him again. I do not see the difference in power of the voice between him and Pavarotti, but Pavarotti is the trained opera singer. Paul is brilliant, it can only get better, and I met the man at the stage door, you would have thought he was one of the stage hands, modest, unassuming, no pretence, he does not have helicopters like the three tenors to get him to the concert. Pavarotti and Carrerous have all noted the talent of Paul Potts, and his many fans cannot get enough of this wonderful man, wonderful talent.Anne
Many people have been "beat up" in life, but keep on going, as Paul Potts has with his belief in his voice, his best friend, next to his faithful wife encouraging his dream. Wow! What a trip!!
Watching Paul's premier on the British talent show, I got a kick out of watching Simon Cowel, whith pencil in mouth, almost drop it when Paul sang. Was funny..... yet quite serious. Simon recognized Paul's talent immediately. As did we all.
As far as all the crying goes from respondents, its not about being sad or happy. I believe its about your own personal wave lengths and sometimes, certain sounds just make your emotions surface to the vibrations. Paul's projection of voice is really BIG and it hits you in the mind and heart. He IS going places with his God gifted talent.....his voice. And he loves to sing to the people, thats us. Thank you Paul and I look forward to hearing alot from you over the years.
Paul Potts, I have just seen you in concert, amazing, Mario Lanza reincarnated, altjough I think a nicer person than he, you walk about with no self inportance, I could not beleive how humble you are in person, indeed rare, never mind in the conceited world of celebrities. Your stage presence is fine, we do not want to see cocky, conceited arrogant, artificial looks like the other welsh singer out there.
Paul Potts I also saw in concert, better than I have heard anyone sing in a long time. There are people going on webs criticizing this beautiful talented man, I suspect it is the smae people, opera snobs, struggling singers, and just spiteful people. I do not see Any opera singer better than him. its not the mechanical process you see in opera that people want, its Paul Potts. Opera elite, who do not like it that Paul in just two minutes Paul shook the world, and people with years of training getting nowhere, are out to get him. The man has no pretence, his character quite godly, please go to his concert, you will want to see him again.
my friend said, do not watch Paul Potts Ist audition you will become hooked, I did, and I have become hooked, need help, if I go more than a day without watching him, I get withdrawul symptems. What is it about this man, his voice, the rare breed of person he is,he has to be the most interesting people about, time we had some of his type around, they are a rare thing in deed, Long Live Paul Potts.
Can anyone fill me in on Paul Potts personal details,I am very interested. Are his parents divorced?, I heard he used to hear them fight as a child, What about his brothers, this man intrigues me.
Read the wikipedia page on Paul, too much to type here.
Although all married couples squabble I NEVER read that Paul commented on that.
My son sent me the UTube link of Mr. Pott's first performance on the British show...Oh my... I love hearing beautiful voices and Paul has the voice of an angel. I can hardly wait until I get off work tonight to purchase his CD. When he first appeared and said opera, I admit thinking, geeze I hope he doesn't mess up. First note, I was absolutely blown away. I googled him and found his other performances. I wish he was coming to Portland, OR. Maybe next time. All my good wishes to you. A delight.
Has anyone heard the outstanding female teen out of St. Peters, Missouri who has the voice of an angel and aspires to be an opera singer. I know her first name is Gabrielle but know nothing else. She has won numerous vocal competitions and they are putting her voice on the par of some of the greats. I have heard that not only does she have the soprano high belting but she has the lower chest range that will also move you to tears. Does anyone know more?
Sounds like Americas Version of Paul Potts. Who is she?
Yes, Paul Potts mum and dad were two warring parents, he had it at school then he had to come home to rows.
Saw Paul in Cardiff 1st Feb. What an experience! What a voice! It made grown men cry. Two standing ovations from a packed house of 5200 - Wonderful
When he appears in a venue near you don't miss it.
I saw Paul Potts in yorkshire, now my daughter is going to treat me to the Apolla performance because he sang better than anything I have heard. I bought Russell Watson the other day,his voice did not do anything for me, cold and something about the night about him, Paul Potts personality comes through in his singing, and that uplifts the soul.
How many CDs has Paul Potts sold, some say one million, some say two million, is he a millionaire.
This is a man blessed by God. Paul Potts
People are often unreasonable, illogical and self-centered forgive them anyway.

You see in the end its between you and God.
It was never between you and them anyway.
You see Paul Potts dont believe any bad remarks from anyone, you have a gift, believe in that gift. You made even the hardest man cry, yes Simmon teared up, in that last performas. And as he said you are a breath of fresh air.
Paul Potts in concert sounds like Mario Lanza and is as good, cannot get on the website to answer back to Catherine Jones at the empire. These critics, what is wrong with them, they think they can put their opinion on the masses, and that their opinion is somehow right, Paul is bringing out the jealousy in a lot of people, also the bullies, bullies always go after the great and godly.
I did not know of Paul Potts, because when everything was going onI was not living in the country, I did not know of anything about him, but on the radio I heard his voice and it did something the great Pavarotti did not. I have attended several operas, seen all the greats in concert, but Paul is something different. I have looked through his web and the people that compare him to Pavarotti as I have, but the critics should not go after a man like the nasty Adam Sweeting. I have just seen Paul Potts in concert, he is second to none, even better taking into account his lack of classical training in comparison. Is Adam Sweeting deaf, or just a very spiteful man? Someone said he is doing a documentry on Pavarotti, uh! say no more, I have no doubt if Adam Sweeting was at school with Paul Potts, he would have probably been one of the bullies. He has tried to get Paul Potts out of a job, now someone get him out, all get together and complain to the telegraph, do not buy the paper.
Adam Sweeting, managed to get egg on his face, not only for himself but for his boss, Rupert Christianson (who dislikes Paul Potts) but also his newspaper).Anyone who dislikes Paul has that right. But..... to offer a specific criticism of something he has not seen...
See:- myspace.com/paul_potts Jan 27 Titled "Adam Sweeting We Have a Problem"
It seems our illustrious ROCK reviewer, wasn't there for the second half, of which he was most particular in denouncing. How his company was ever selected by BBC 2 to do the peice on Pavarotti is amazing to all. Jackie
I wanted to read about Simon Cowell when I accidently stumbled on Paul Pott's, singing on his first audition. My jaw too dropped to the floor and then tears!!! I replayed the video over and over and out loud I thank dear good God for Paul and for giving him this gift! Its seems so fitting and deserving!
I could not wait until I showed the video to my husband, not telling him ahead of time what he is going to see. My husband was so silent and then I saw tears purring down his face....We both cried!I can't wait for the concert in Chicago and the CD, because my husband and I will be there!
Adam Sweetingshould be sacked. He went after Paul Potts to destroy him. I am a person who attends operas, have been to the classical concerts, I found Paul Potts in concert the other day, something very rare, his voice is strong, but has the edge over the top opera singers, and the man is unbeleivable. I spoke with him a while, you could not believe is humbleness, the goodness vibrates from this man. Why don't people complain to the Telegraph editor or to the awful man himself, I am going to. In two minutes he did what trained opera singers few have been able to do in a lifetime.
I agree with this article except for the last sentence ..."Move over Andrea Bocelli with Paul Potts in town, no one is going to remember your name"...
Potts may develop into a tenor but that doesn't mean that he's going to replace Bocelli. I don't believe that Bocelli claims or wants to be the next greatest tenor, in fact most people listen to his songs and like him for his melodic voice when he sings those Italian pop songs and not full opera songs. I doubt Potts can do both, become a great tenor and also have a melodic voice to sings those Italian pop songs. So while Potts may be good in tenor, Bocelli is great in Italian romantic pop songs, so you can't compare apples to bananas... and no one is going to replace no one and no one is going to be forgotten.
We saw a documentary on Sunday, 10/2/08 in South Africa about Paul Potts. This man is phenominal. When he sang, Time to say Goodbye, I sobbed. Not just because of the pure intensity and passion in his voice but for the fact that he was singing with a voice of all those who have ever dreamed. I hope Paul and Jules experience life as they have never known, remaining grounded but delirious with success. You are truly an inspiration
Paul Potts is in concert just awesome. Why is he not in La Scala, more to do with the lack of opera training, and the tesco suit, doing in a few minutes what most have not managed with years of training.
Paul Potts is Great! Have you also heard of Costel Busuioc? A Romanian working in Spain who came out of nowhere and won the Hijos de Babel competition. You can see his songs during the competition.
HE IS AMAZING ! - Especially his version of Nessum Dorma
Paul Potts!!!! What a gift, touching places only heaven can touch, thanks so much for sharing, I am so moved, their are not words!!! Love to you and your wife and your future!!!
I have watched the Paul Potts audition countless times now.
This, easily, is one of THE Greatest Moments EVER captured on film - in every possible way.
I love watching the judges faces turning from disbelief into total wonder.
An incredible moment.
Thanks so much for posting.

Great article. Bullies and (most) critics are very much the same, they always go after your spirit to try to shut it down. Paul Potts should not hear a word. God gave him an unbelievable voice that could not remain silent forever. Sing! You are beautiful.
So sad that it takes Paul Potts - a man whose voice is mediocre at best - to get people listening to opera. Those who only listen to popular music simply don't ever hear quality singing. This is the reason Potts' voice has such an impact - because it is better than the junk you hear on the radio. However, it is also clearly inferior to virtually any classically trained tenor voice, and simply blown away forever compared to some of the best tenors, whose recordings are readily available. If Potts has got you interested in opera, that's fantastic. Now go check out Caruso, Pavarotti or Bjorling sing the same arias Potts sings, and you'll really see what you've been missing.
hubris. You are so wrong, we all know Paul is not classically trained like the so called greats, but his voice by far the best. Pavarotti, his voice becomes too much after one CD, too opera sounding, Pauls voice connects up with the soul and is the one you can listen to time after time. Paul without the years of opera training is making people sit up to opera, credit where it is due.
Yes Paul Potts voice is the opera peoples choice, something about the voice, it won't leave you. Hubris Are you a failed opera singer, who has trained for years, there are a few of them on Paul Potts site, put Paul in a top opera, the tickets will sell out like they have done for his sixty something shows, some in top opera houses. The tenor range of Paul compares with Pavarotti. Like some artists, they have something that makes them stand out, I am afraid Paul Potts is one of them.
Paul Potts is a singing sensation because...he sings with so much blatant honesty, purity and humility. He is as genuine as a child and it resonates through his art. He approaches the music, the lyrics and the purpose with an unadulterated quest to tell the truth in the song.
He is also performing his own soul. Audiences recognize this invaluable essence and cannot help but be captivated. My gosh, mark my words, he will be legendary.
hubris. Don't you think we have not heard these great classical singers, people live in the

Wonderful writeup! I didn't know about Paul Potts until someone posted the audition video on another blog. My jaw absolutely hit the floor when he sang that first phrase of Nessun Dorma and it has pretty much been on the floor since then!
It is a great thing when the little guys, and the good guys, grasp that shining moment. I hope this is just the beginning of greater things for him.
Andy (who's played in an orchestra pit, and has heard a few singers in my day)
