With genres from romance to crime, and biographical subjects from Lincoln to Princess Di, we're running a gamut or two this week, in fiction and non...

FICTION:

Cat O' Nine Tales by Jeffrey Archer

Actually there are 12 tales in Archer‘s fifth story collection, but nine of them, in a twist upon the write-what-you-know dictum, are based on real-life incidents and anecdotes the best-selling British author and politician picked up during his two years in the clink after his conviction for perjury. Judging from some of the ingenious scams and schemes illustrated among the stories, Archer served his time well.

The Maytrees by Annie Dillard
The Pulitzer Prize winner is best known for her nonfiction, but this 11th book, her second novel (after 1992’s The Living), is a fictional account of a broken family as they confront the complexities of life, love and death. Set on Cape Cod after World War II, the storyline follows the courtship and marriage of Toby Maytree and Lou Bigelow, who oversee a family and the commencement of highpoints and heartbreaks, tragedies and triumphs, themes evocatively rendered by Dillard’s incisive observances and poetic language.

Blaze: A Posthumous Novel by Richard Bachman

The King is Dead, Long Live the King...

Michael Tolliver Lives by Armistead Maupin

Armistead Maupin seems quite certain: "Michael Tolliver Lives is NOT a sequel to Tales [of the City] and it's certainly not Book 7 in the series." Nevertheless, Maupin belies a bit his protests-too-much declaration with this novel centered on the titular Tales character as he's surrounded by other names and faces from the series, and found content in his relationship, his house, and his job - his own personal tale of the city.
