Do you like touring?

I love touring because, first of all, for us, we’re in a tour van with five of our best friends. We get to see the country and meet new people. You can’t beat that. I mean, we’re young you can’t beat that lifestyle. That’s the first thing I like about touring, but in addition too that, I like performing for people who haven’t seen us before and melting their faces off or whatever. (laughing) That’s fun, a lot of fun.

Tell me about your debut album Take It All.

We released it August 4th, '06, and this is the second time we’ve toured it, taken to places outside southern California. That album, I would say, is the pinnacle of our success thus far in this group.

In Living ColourHow would you describe Take It All’s sound?
Neo-classic rock. I like to think we take the best elements of the history of music because we come from pretty well educated musical backgrounds in this group, and we have a pretty good knowledge of the greats before us; so we take the aspects of those greats, that we like, and we put them in a modern format.

My favourite musical period as far as rock goes was the 1970s and so we take a lot of influence from there. If you were to compare us to bands nowadays I guess you could say, maybe something like Wolfmother to some extent or a band like Muse, I have a lot of classic influences in my writing and so does [Matthew] Bellamy, he has a lot of classic influence too, so some comparisons can be drawn there. Although we don’t necessarily have the electronic side that Muse has but at its core as far as harmonies and chord progressions, that sort of thing definitely. So if somebody wants me to put into words what we sound like just think 1970’s with that edge. It doesn’t sound dated either.

I agree, it doesn’t sound dated. It’s got a retro sound without sounding dated. It’s very groovy. Are you recording any new material?

Take It All CD CoverWe will probably record… It’s so nice nowadays that it is so relaxed and we are really fast in the studio, we could definitely go into the studio next week if we wanted to, we definitely have enough material to cut a new album, but we’ll wait for a little bit. It’s all a timing thing for us, could go into the studio anytime we wanted but is that what we should be doing or should we be planning out next tour or should we be just playing more shows in southern California or trying to land that elusive record deal. But we have enough material for a new album great stuff.

How does this thing work againI'm a writer and music journalist originally from Salt Lake City, but now living in Scotland. I was a Punk/Goth in the '80s and these artistic influences have stayed with me; although a love of Chopin, chamber music, and Spanish guitar would seem to belie this. I am one of many assistant music editors at Blogcritics.org, staff writer for a gay men's magazine based in Edinburgh, and a freelance writer.
