Projected as a full dress rehearsal for the moon landing, the craft launched on May 18, 1969 at 12:49 a.m. with three astronauts: Eugene Cernan, Thomas Stafford and John W. Young. It spent eight days in space, testing the lunar module's capabilities in an orbit about eight miles from the moon. The mission was successful, and provided the world with the first close-range color video image of the moon.

Apollo X was the fourth of five Apollo flights within a nine-month period from late 1968 through the summer of 1969. Two months later, Apollo XI landed safely on the moon.
