Movie Review: Bug

The lead performances are simply incredible. Ashley Judd and Michael Shannon completely sell their roles, with Shannon reprising the role he filled in the stage play. I was completely involved with Agnes and Peter; Ashley and Michael no longer existed. They threw themselves into their roles with reckless abandon. They believed in the characters they were portraying and the emotions that play out are genuine, and they are very scary.

The emotion builds from those awkward first moments where they are feeling each other out, to the frenzied shriek of their monologues. Harry Connick Jr. is pretty good as well; at first he seems like a slimy, violent guy that you don't want around the sweet and simple Agnes, and under most circumstances you would be right, but you can see him change in his limited screen time, becoming more and more concerned with what is happening inside that room, and thus becoming an integral part of Peter's rantings.

Bug was directed by William Friedkin, who took us to the edge of sanity with one of the scariest films ever made, The Exorcist, back in 1973. This is his first film since 2003's The Hunted, and first horror/thriller since The Guardian seventeen years ago. This film is much more limited and focused than many on his resume, limited to just a handful of characters and one set for the majority of its runtime. Watching it, I couldn't help but think that this was Friedkin by way of David Cronenberg, kind of like how Match Point was Woody Allen by way of Alfred Hitchcock.

Bottom line. However you want to look at it, Bug is one seriously twisted film, one that digs itself into your flesh and feeds on your blood. I left this one with that distinct feeling of crawling skin. Judd and Shannon are absolutely mesmerizing as their affair spirals out of control in a self-destructive tailspin from which there is no escape.

Highly Recommended.

when did the movie "bug" appear on tv and is it on video?

#2 — May 30, 2007 @ 23:51PM — Josh Dawson [URL]

The movie "Bug", by William Friedkin, was by far one of the most intense psycological thrillers I have ever had the pleasure of seeing. It truly does make you question almost everything. It really gets inside you and makes you feel a certain sense of paranoia. I very much liked the symbol of the "bugs" themselves. The idea that the modern, everyday american can know so little but know everything at the same time, the idea that they question everything and believe so much of nothing at all. The idea of complete paranoia, thats the symbol of the bugs. It gets inside you, makes you feel uneasy, makes you almost crazy, it can even make you kil yourself. This is by far, one of the most inspiring films ever made. To many others it may be just stupid but thats only because they do not understand it truly. Thats my thought on the movie.

#3 — May 31, 2007 @ 01:13AM — Steve C. [URL]

...this movie is not a passive experience; if you sit there and watch it you will likely be disappointed, but the moment you allow yourself to become invested, it is like flipping a switch and it becomes one freaky thrill ride.

Couldn't have said it better. Solid review, dude.

#4 — June 2, 2007 @ 09:22AM — Tee

That movie was WACK!!!!

#5 — June 4, 2007 @ 14:39PM — Michelle

Don't waste your money! This movie was a total disappointment. Maybe I didn't "invest" myself into the action that was taking place on the screen. Maybe I was too distracted by the subtle references to Ashley Judd's sexuality (straight, bi-, gay?) or her 15 ft. boob that continually flashed on the screen during the sex scene. I was disgusted by the idea that this movie was billed as a thriller, only to be bored out of my mind. The entire theater's laughter and jeers at the completion of this mindless tale solidified my personal opinion. Absolute crap!

#6 — June 4, 2007 @ 14:46PM — Chris Beaumont [URL]

Let me get this straight, you need the audience to inform you that your opinion is right? I don't care if you don't like the movie, but don't use others to validate your opinion, think for yourself.

#7 — June 8, 2007 @ 21:29PM — Joe

this movie was the worst movie i have ever seen in my entire life. Dont waste your time or money even seeing this unless you want to laugh at how horrible it is.

#8 — June 10, 2007 @ 22:18PM — Paul Hoffman

This is absolutely the stupidist and worst movie I have ever seen!

#9 — September 16, 2007 @ 14:37PM — Bunni3

I would have to say "BUG",is a movie to which you have your own opinion, don't listen to others reviews, you may see it in a different light. Most have their conception that because it was called bug(emphasis on the bug)you would actually see more....whats the word????BUGS!.Instead of two or three glimpses tops!
On the other hand,I would have to agree with Josh Dawson,if you get the analytical concept of the movie, its a great movie, but most fail to think on that level.

#10 — September 27, 2007 @ 21:49PM — Shelly

Is this movie about the devastating effects of meth? I hope it's meant to symbolize the journey from trashy to downright scum...if not, it is ridiculous.

#11 — September 30, 2007 @ 02:43AM — Mike

I could not wait for this movie to end. It was torture. I hope this directed never gets to make a movie again.

#12 — September 30, 2007 @ 02:45AM — Liz

This movie was as bad as 23. So happy I didnt waste my money in the theatre...

#13 — October 1, 2007 @ 12:54PM — Dave

I'm not sure if I liked this movie or not. I still couldn't tell if this was about drug induced paranoid delusions, or if this was actually government experiment portrayed by the doctor who steps in towards the end. It wasn't terrible by all means, just maybe a little to far out there for me to understand entirely.

#14 — October 3, 2007 @ 10:46AM — Erica009

The movie wasn't bad, but it wasn't what I'd expected. The previews made it out to be some kind of sci-fi ...bug movie. But yeah, the movie seemed kind of ambiguous..is it about paranoia, or drugs? I felt like we didn't get enough out of Ashley Judd's character to fully understand the blossoming relationship between Peter and Agnes, so it comes off as a bit hurried and not so much romantic as desperate and weird. Not only that, but to some people it might've seemed obvious that Peter was a whack job, but up until the end credits I was wondering if he was telling the truth or if he was just paranoid...I don't really like movies with such vague undertones. And who was Dr.Sweet? wtf, where did this guy come from, who was he? We never found out if he was there to help or harm. All we saw was him come in and try to get Peter and then get viciously stabbed. The movie wasn't detailed enough for me

#15 — October 10, 2007 @ 00:31AM — Ashley

My boyfriend and I watched this movie, I must admit. The first 30 minutes into the movie I was disappointed because it seemed like it was dragging forever to get to the "Bugs" when in the end it was all about the journey of paranoia.

The only thing I liked about the movie was I could tell it was based off a play, because the director did a great job, cutting scenes if you sit there and really watch how the movie was made its really interesting in a "drama" set mind.

Other than that, the movie was quite a disappointment. I have to say. But literature and movies are always one's opinion!

#16 — October 10, 2007 @ 14:39PM — Ron

I think the people who didn't like this flick are the type that need everything neat and clean and logical and who need their movies delivered with an ending that ties everything together, leaving nothing to question or ponder. I really liked this movie. Yea, it's a bit slow developing, but Judd and Shannon do absolutly splendid jobs playing their parts. I can only conclude, and I think the writer and director left us some hints, that Agnes had her son taken away by the authorities because he was endangered by Agnes's condition. He may have been placed with either her sister or a relative of Goss's, we are left to guess. (Agnes mentioned having a sister and Goss left for a few days to settle some "old business".) The loss of her son was destructive and cruel to Agnes, but unfortunately that's the was the system works sometimes. The death of Agness and Peter was their release from their torment. All in all a very interesting but unusual movie.

#17 — October 10, 2007 @ 15:35PM — joe johnson

this is the worst *%%$^$% MOVIE I HAVE EVER SEEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I could have made a better movie!!!!!!!! if i ever regret doing something it would have been watching and wasting my time on that STUPID A** MOVIE!!! Thank god i didnt pay for that S**T!!!! I feel much better now.

#18 — October 15, 2007 @ 14:28PM — christina

what the heck kind of ending was that???? This is the one and only movie I could NOT understand.. and I tried soo hard to!! :(

#19 — October 15, 2007 @ 20:14PM — stuart thigpen

"Bug" had all the clues to what was going on. Characters were going in and out of the Motel room and sceens like they were visitors. Because they were visitors. Agnes is an inmate in an asylum, literally living in a padded cell. Many people live out their lives in asylums, not knowing they are so ill, and make up the life they are living in their head. Such is the evidence. By the end of the movie, the motel room was looking like a padded cell. The "Bug" problem that at first was Peter's problem, centers into Agnes being the Queen, and Peter the drone. RC's relationship and talk about adoption, had to do with the friend that was adopting her child. That was what the slap was all about when Agnes threw RC out of the room. Her husband was never really there, his visits were to validate her shame. The Dr. Sweet character was not Peter's doctor, but Agnes's doctor, and the diagnosis of Peter's condition was truely Agnes's condition. How did Agnes get that way, the movie told how, the alcohol and drugs in the movie was her life style. The movie was about her manipulation of reality in her sick mind, giving her a just and final solution to end her life.

#24 — October 31, 2007 @ 13:38PM — Luis

I also wonder if this was all about drugs or maybe that the one guy was just a psycho and he just drove the girl into it. I will give this movie a C. I was also expecting at least 1 bug to come up, I think this is what really kept me watching all the way to the end.

#25 — November 3, 2007 @ 23:42PM — Mad as hell

This is the Stupidest movie ever. I'm a smart person and this movie left me scratching my head at the end. Feeling violated, I'm wondering if I can sue the director and get my money back or something.

WASTE OF TIME!! I wish I could post that on the DVDs in all the stores. AAArrgghhhh!!!

#30 — November 17, 2007 @ 23:40PM — Max

This movie is a shit-fest. I want my time and money back. I absolutely hate it when movies put some drug-induced horror into a movie and leave it at that. If there is anyone reading this who hasn't already seen the movie, then DO NOT SEE IT, unless you either 1.) are high, or 2.) have some strange urge to see two druggies shitty paranoid shitty existence.

#31 — November 20, 2007 @ 09:10AM — Me

I can't believe how many people out there are that closed minded. It's one thing to not like the movie, but to say it sucks is just making you look stupid. This movie is based on (and is extremely accurate to) a play which ran for many years. It's not a movie with the Rock or Brandon Frasier saving a princess. I love the mindless action flicks that come out just as much as anyone else, but this is not the same thing. You have to compare it to something "COMPARABLE!" It's like saying a Vonnegut book sucks because it's not like MAD Magazine. It's a movie to satisfy the artist who wrote it. If you don't like that artist's vision, then say that. But the movie was extremely well done and accurate to that vision, so the movie itself can't suck, only the writer. I thought the movie was very good. I'm not sure I've ever seen another movie which left me so unsatisfied at the end, but I like that feeling. It's nice sometimes to have things a little messy. Life is not about feeling good all the time and having tidy endings where everything falls together. It's pretty great to get something out into the world that's not made based on the assumption that the majority of people who watch movies are mindless drones. Unfortunately this forum proves that wrong. Good job guys. No wonder everybody hates America.

#32 — November 24, 2007 @ 21:20PM — L. Grover [URL]

I found this movie more educational than entertaining. I might have liked it if I wasn't left with so many unanswered quetions. It was definitely not my kind of movie.

#33 — November 25, 2007 @ 04:00AM — Brandon and Amber

We have bugs everywhere now, They are in my skin...in my house....in my couch....in my bed!!!! We tried to show our friends and they said they cannot see them!!! We are going to not answer the phone or door, snd tske on the bugs by ourselves....We can do this!!

#34 — November 26, 2007 @ 01:56AM — Thezy

Over all I think this was the best movie to fall asleep o,n because you would have felt the same way if you watched it or not... Confused "Whats going on?" You never seen her kid, and you never seen the bugs that they were talking about... The ending was horrible, I didn't even know it was over.... I know when they went to the screening the actors had to feel just like the movie "SHITTY"... I could write a better movie than thats HAHAHAH, whack ass movie....

#35 — December 1, 2007 @ 00:13AM — RicknAtl

Intense movie for sure, but way too long and not even slight realistic. Ashley still looks good though.

#36 — December 2, 2007 @ 23:25PM — pup

This movie sucks ass!!!! I thought the 2 reputable actors would choose a better film. My fiance and I, after suffering through the entire film, proceeded to watch the director's comments. 2 Words: Fucking creep! Self indulged- creative- wanna be! He sucks and should never make a move again. Are you serious! Ashley, Harry- find a better screening system for choosing films- I've lost faith! What a fucking disappointment.

#37 — December 12, 2007 @ 12:02PM — JCrow Nuremberg

I agree that the previews offered a different kind of movie that what I had originally seen. I thought it was about actual bugs under the skin and thought it was a bugged-out horror movie. Instead it was more of a thriller/drama and no horror movie at all.

At first I thought it was kinda boring. I was thinking 'what the hell have I rented? This is BORING!" but you do get pulled in later. The tension and drama builds and if nothing more - you can't help but to finish watching it to see what happens. I agree with most everything the reviewer said about the movie. The two leads were wonderful, especially Shannon. He seemed as reluctant, slimy, and off-centered like he could be that way in real life.

This movie was confusing tho - which is only one of the few movies were 'confusion' actually works for it. YOu wonder how much of it is 'true' versus how much of it is true paranoia. Was Pater in the military? Yeah, I can believe that. Is he schitzo? Yeah, I can believe that. Was that guy a robot? Maybe, but I don't think so. Does the goverment experiment on people in the military (or civilians for that matter)? Hell yeah, I can believe that. Was Peter experimented on? Maybe. Maybe not. It's hard to tell what's true was was just pure psycho imagination. I like that. Good movie. I give it a B.

#38 — December 15, 2007 @ 16:50PM — Jonnybe

This is the absolutely the most stupid and sick movie i have ever seen. anyone who likes this shit must be sick aswell DONT NEVER EVER SEE THIS FUCKING SHIT!!!!!!!A BIG WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY.
give me the money back please and some for my waste of time...they should pay u for watchin the garbage

#39 — December 16, 2007 @ 20:57PM — China

I COMPLETELY agree with the AUTHOR of this review - for the people who didnt like it, they just didnt get it. This movie is BRILLIANT. I enjoyed this movie more than I have one in a while. Its about characters, and what a beautiful development and portrayal of characters. They were very real, and I think that most people are not used to seeing that realness portrayed.

#40 — December 20, 2007 @ 06:03AM — cajé

If you like: 23 and blueberry this is your kind a movie,

otherwise: rent another one...

This sucks

#41 — December 21, 2007 @ 03:40AM — Lee

This movie reminded me of Mulholland Drive. I kept waiting for a pause at which time someone would pop up on screen and say "PSYCH!" then start a real plot. I wondered at the end if Ashley is either a workaholic or has serious debts/spending habits that left her little choice other than to accept this role. The 'eye candy' offered little consolation as it bordered on amateur porn. I would like both Mulholland Drive and this movie to be redone. I WANTED to like them but was left hanging the entire time.

#42 — December 25, 2007 @ 13:34PM — Meowhouse

Look again! This film is a metaphor for crystal meth addiction. But few viewers seem to have understood the obvious cues. And it works brilliantly. We are watching the disintegration of two lonely souls feeding each others' paranoia as they pick at their skin, endlessly tweaking with aluminum foil and bug zappers and microscopes -- through which they see bugs that aren't there. If you've ever watched an addict disappear, you'll get it. If you didn't get it the first time around, try watching it again.

#43 — December 30, 2007 @ 01:12AM — Susan [URL]

Ok now this movie....what the problem was...was they had advertised this as a horror movie!! It said the "most distrubing horrow movie yada yada yada." I just paid 4.99 plus tax to rent this from home. After waiting for a month and a half I finally decided I wanted to pay for it. We don't use on demand very often!! The advertisement was a complete lie!! I mean when this was out in theaters they showed a trailer with a bug crawling under a persons skin. It was a lie....just like the Village was basically a hoax...should have been made for TV...you know whatever you want it to be the addiction...the paranoia....it just wasn't horrow and it wasn't scary and it wasn't suspenseful. You pretty much knew exactly what was going to happen when the doctor came in and was...OK sitting on a Gas can! Like we can't figure out what that was there for!! I think I kept watching it cause I thought ok...at the end they will show there were really bugs. We know there are crazy people out there weather or not drug induced or not! I can't see making a movie out of it and calling it horror or even thriller. It was maybe under another heading where you attract the right audience would be an ok movie!! This went ever horror lovers and was nothing anywhere near horror!! I actually feel like I was Frauded!!!

#44 — January 6, 2008 @ 13:42PM — XXXXXX

I thought it was an intense movie. It did leave me with certain questions, for example, Why did the doctor free base with Ashley? Strange movie, but it was a DIFFERENT kind of movie and I feel worth the price of a rental.

#45 — January 7, 2008 @ 11:32AM — Queen Arma

This movie was amazing! I bought it thinking it was a horror movie about bugs, but was corrected as soon as the first bug arrived.
A twisted and an interesting look into two very damaged individuals feeding each others sickness. What each person can take away from watching this film, is a matter of perception.

#46 — January 14, 2008 @ 01:00AM — Caroline

although i haven't watched that film yet, i bet it's one of the best thrillers ever in the history of fim!!!

#47 — January 21, 2008 @ 23:26PM — Kevin

I could have made a better "movie" with a Polaroid camera and a bag of crayons. This is the worst kind of popular tripe disguised as "art." It isn't art. It's crap. Can't figure out why/how these two VERY good actors got conned into making this. Someone's agent need a new Mercedes? Please, please don't go see this... . Take your kids to a rock-fight...cut your wrists...go swimming in the East River. Anything will be less painful.

#48 — February 6, 2008 @ 07:01AM — jamal and klark

we dint hav a clue about da fuckin film who was on da fone??? how comes at the end at one point ders a dead man layin ther and at anuva thers all her sons clothes with the fone ringin...total fuck up movie who ever wrote it is a heroin addict who needs mental help PSHYCO

#49 — February 17, 2008 @ 03:01AM — Susie Q

Ok, lets put clues and use what little mind anyone has left because movies now adays require no real thinking. This is not about Agnes being in a mental hospital all through the movie you get hints that they're on meth if in the end when you see the meth pipe you might put it all together. Clue one they are in Oklahoma Meth Capital, two you get the idea that her and her ex had drug problems maybe meth, and she lost her kid in the grocery store or got him taken away it could go either way cus you get from Jerry that he got taken away and you get from her that she lost like someone stole lost him which meth heads think alot of times when they have their kids taken, another clue the phone calls she kept getting and only her and Peter heard which Jerry is confused about when she confronts him, confused sexuality, great sex with strangers, the bugs, the paranoia, the meth pipe in the end. theres probly more but I mean come on smartin' up your are in the meth addicts head, that movie is all about being in a meth addicts head seeing from their point of view along with your own, if you aren't careful it does get confusing but pick up on the little things.

#50 — February 20, 2008 @ 00:52AM — Mike

First of All there was no meth use at all in this movie. I didnt see any geeter pipes what so ever. The doctor looks like he hitting a little mini bong. It could possibly be crack but you definately cant do meth with an open flame hitting hit.

Second, the main male char had to be a paranoid skitso. There is no way the drugs created a ficticious past for him.

The movie does not make any sense on a logical level. If it is indded drug use that caused all this then it owuldnt have came so abruptly. The whole time they are acting like she is snorting coke which wouldnt overtime lead her to those actions. Meth would be the only answer and even then the paranoia would ocme over time form lack of sleep. They sleep plenty in the movie. Although if oyu notice in the movie they never eat what so ever.

Eitherway you can tell that the director doesnt get his point across at all. If the movie is indeed about meth addiction then he failed portray it properly. If the movie is about a paranoid skitso bringing another person into his world then he didnt do a good job of why she would be so naive. She barely knows him and hes acting extremely weird.

Eitherway, dont bother with this movie unless you want to watch a director fail miserably at teaching you a hard lesson on drug use. Even the poeple who like the movie cant agree on what the overall message is. It honeslty is two idiots in a hotel room making absolutely no sense. I mean......... how long where htey in the hotel (wouldnt a room manager come and check out the bugs she was describing)? The movie jumps around like crazy. One minute they are chillin and acting pretty crazy and the next the whole place is covered in tin foil. Its absolutely a waste of itme.

#51 — February 20, 2008 @ 22:12PM — Mike

One of the worst movies ever made.

#52 — February 22, 2008 @ 01:23AM — rn

seriously this movies was flat out WEIRD!

#53 — March 8, 2008 @ 22:29PM — Sam

Well i just finished watching this movie and totally loved it!! I have to say though that i had never seen the trailer first so i can understand some peoples comments and how they may feel betrayed. I think it is really strange how so many people dont get what this movie is about!!! Weird.......... anyway so Angus is already a paranoid person she is taking a few drugs here and there she has this miserable pass from losing here child and u get the sense that she is not really having the best time in the world.... she lives in a shitty place, her hair is greasy and she lives with fear in her life..... then a long comes this man with Schizophrenia and slowly draws her in to his world of conspiracy theories........... it is so easy to see how she can become so manipulated into is way of thinking because of her already frail mental state of mind. The acting is amazing even to the point where i totally believed that they did have bugs!!! Maybe they would have had better reviews if they had marketed it a little better as i guess it is a little misleading. But i have to say i LOVED it, yes there are somethings i still don't get.... but hey it is thought provoking. I guess people need to think more mental illness than drug induced

#54 — March 16, 2008 @ 11:43AM — Emma

I liked this movie, the two characters kept me hooked. i think it was about crystal meth adiction....

THIS MOVIE CAN SUCK A SHWANG! IT SUCK ASS! WERE THERE EVEN FUCKIN BUGS? SOMEONE ADD SOMETHING BELOW THIS AND PLEASE TELL MEEE.

#56 — March 27, 2008 @ 19:54PM — Rick

This was a great movie! The acting was superb! The story was well written! I can see why some people may not have liked it or have laughed at it. This was a work of art, not your typical Hollywood fare. Thought is required for this one. Some people would rather be entertained with mindless junk and I understand that. Some like to "escape" in a movie. This one however, had no escape. But that is what makes it so good.

#57 — March 31, 2008 @ 22:52PM — jess

perhaps many are having a negative response to this movie because its mareketed as a horror, the name 'bug' suggests its one of those infestation horrors like 'rats' or something simular rather than a pyschological thriller. i think its perfectly understandable that ashley judds character could be so niave, you dont need to go into her past to see shes abit of a desperate nobody. does anyone know if she bulked up for this role? or has she really gotten that old

#58 — April 1, 2008 @ 00:53AM — Brittany b

I just finished this movie and was very pleased. You had to step outside the mental box...I had the same expectations as some of the negative reviewers...sci fi bug thriller...but I was surprised when the film took my mind somewhere else.the characters were so sureal. But the funny part about my opinion is when I realized it wasn't what I originally thought I was disapointed, yet very interested in to what it was sopposed or ment to be...I never had that fast of a switch of emotional thought before and enjoyed the feeling for a change.only bad thing I have to say is maybe it could of been better if there was more emphasis on each characters background...ALTHOUGH then what all these HATERS have to complain about not understanding next lol to many facts?...also I have one other thing to say about the miss Judd looking old coment...that's crazy and your crazy for thinking she looks so old...do you even know how old she is? News *** flash*** SHE PLAYED A CHARACTER. Not to mention one who depends on alcohol and drugs to get her through her mentally conflicting day and has a dead beat job living in a motel in BFE. Did you think she would look super hot from Los Angeles? I can assure you she doesn't look like that on a normal basis.. :^)I LOVE THE JUDDS by the way!
