DVD Review: Wrestlemania 23 - Ultimate Limited Edition

Special referee Stone Cold Steve Austin called a clean match, becoming directly involved at multiple points when the wrestlers didn’t follow the rules. In a quick second, Austin was the recipient of Umaga’s Samoan Spike. Knocked out, McMahon’s son Shane ran to the ring to begin an assault on Lashley. Shane flawlessly pulled off his cross-ring drop kick, only to take off his shirt to reveal himself as a new referee. Trump would also grow tired of McMahon’s taunting, running to the opposite side of the ring to nail Vince with some clean punches.
Shane’s stint as the official was brief as Austin came to, tossing Shane into the steel steps, allowing Lashley to finish off Umaga with a brutal slam. Vince would try to escape his bald fate, only to be carried into the ring where Trump would assist Lashley in shaving Vince bald. Demoralized and embarrassed, Vince left the arena with his head down. In the ring, Austin shared a beer with Trump, only to nail him with a Stone Cold Stunner, which Trump would completely screw up by barely falling down.
The Women’s title match was next up on the card, pitting recent Playboy cover girl Ashley against Melina. This was a Lumberjill match, with all WWE Divas outside surrounding the ring. A rather sloppy, slow paced match would end on a very fast roll up with Melina coming out on top. The ring would fill for a massive catfight as the Divas charged in to settle whatever differences they may have had.
That would lead into the main event between Shawn Michaels and John Cena. Cena would make a memorable entrance to some pre-recorded video nicely edited to seem as if he drove into the arena and through a glass plate before popping out of the driver's side. The match started slow, with Michaels destroying Cena’s knee, and dominating the bout for a solid ten minutes.
As frustrations grew, Michaels would head outside the ring and piledrive Cena onto the bottom half of the entrance steps. This would leave a gash on the back of Cena’s head, in tune with a Michael’s blade job earlier in the match, and surprisingly the only one for the entire show.
While filled with numerous rest holds and injury selling, the final eight minutes were a true classic. A multiple counter spot brought the crowd to their feet where they would stay for the rest of the battle. Multiple super kick attempts were not enough to keep Cena down. Michaels broke free from a Cena STFU, only to become a victim to it again a few minutes later. His luck ran out and he was forced to tap out, leaving Cena as the WWE champion at Wrestlemania 23 in a wonderfully entertaining match up. ![]()
As with nearly all WWE DVDs, the biggest hurdle is compression. This set fails to find a way around it, unavoidable as it may be with such a hectic background. Clarity and color are bumped up over the original broadcast, though the differences will be negligible to most. Sadly, everything in the video presentation looks as if it’s surrounded by countless moving blocks, and it’s impossible to ignore compression artifacts like that. ![]()
