American Idol: Who Will Walk Away the Winner?
Published May 22, 2007
And then there were two. As American Idol season six comes to a close, we find ourselves once again calling psychic hotlines and consulting the Magic Eight Ball in hopes of predicting who will win — Blake Lewis or Jordin Sparks. It comes down to this, folks (did I sound like a sports announcer because that was totally what I was going for): man versus woman, teenager versus twenty-something, curly locks versus beat box.
In one corner we have Blake Lewis, a man who has style, originality, and an aura that is sure to swoon every teenybopper with a subscription to Tiger Beat. In the other corner we have Jordin Sparks, a woman who has presence, passion, and a voice that very few seventeen-year-olds can ever claim as theirs. Both are good choices, and both will undoubtedly enjoy successful music careers, but only one can be the American Idol. So, who's going to win: Lewis or Sparks? This is one expedition that can't be shared jointly.
If anyone asks me — and oddly enough no one has — I would have to go with Jordin. Don't get me wrong, Blake is a good singer, he's entertaining, and he's a highly original performer, but he occasionally relies too much on antics to draw away from his singing voice. Jordin, on the other hand, is very "what you see is what you get" and what you get with her is pure talent. When it comes down to it, Jordin is a better singer and this is, after all, a singing competition.
Still, the way things have gone in past and present seasons, this could mean very little. In the beginning, this competition seemed to belong to either Melinda Doolittle, LaKisha Jones, or Sanjaya's hair. In the end, as LaKisha lost some of her oomph, and the Sanjaya fanfare was put to a rest, Melinda still appeared poised to win, to be declared the American Idol, to thank the judges, and to sail off into the sunset with the likes of Kelly Clarkson and Ruben Studdard.
But, like almost nearly every American Idol to date, this one was full of a major shocker. With Melinda gone, it's anybody's game. In fact, I am secretly hoping that people will vote for me. I don't really sing, but I was in choir in seventh grade… before I was asked to leave.
When it comes down to it, the winner is already decided: the final competition means very little. Those who vote will continue to vote for "their person" regardless of the last performance. Blake fans are Blake fans and Jordin fans are Jordin fans. No last performance is going to change that.
Regardless of the outcome, if Blake wins or if Jordin walks away victorious, both of these people are set to have record deals thrown at their feet and fan mail thrown into their mailboxes. Yet still, I have to go with Jordin as the winner. If not for her singing voice, then because of my last name.

From the beginning I'd predicted Blake vs Melinda, so this is somewhat of a surprise, but I think I'd go with Jordin as well. I'm sure my daughter will vote for Blake, though.
